Community votes to fix original playground in Maple Leaf Park

Members of the Griesbach Community League voted to take the next step in fixing up the original playground in Maple Leaf Park.

In a vote on June 11, members of the the community opted to spend up to $160,000 to improve the playground. The money will be used to bring the existing blue and yellow climbing structure up to current requirements so it can be enjoyed for years to come. This will include replacing the current slides, tightening everything and painting the entire structure.

The old wooden structure and the climbing dome will be removed, at the expense of Edmonton Public Schools, which currently owns the property. The old sand will also be removed and replaced.

The community league will pay for two new play structures in the park. This will including a climbing and slide structure for kids in the two-to-five-year-old age group and a climbing merry-go-round. This decision was based on feedback from community members, who told the community league that they wanted a safe place for preschoolers to play while the park closer to the school was being used by older children at recess time.

The $160,000 also includes money for benches, at least one picnic table and two trash cans.

The City of Edmonton will add additional trees to the area at no cost.

The park will be fenced off and not open to the public during the repair and installation. We appreciate the community’s patience during this time. The entire process should take six to eight weeks once the fences go up. We will provide more information as it become available.

A copy of the meeting minutes, including discussion and community concerns about this project, is available on the Griesbach Community League website.

The discussion about what to do with the original park also brought up some great new ideas for capital projects the community league should tackle in 2018/19. Have an idea about how to make the community better? Email: communications@griesbachcommunity.com.

Man jailed for selling stolen Griesbach memorial plaques

It was sad event for our community last summer when commemorative plaques honouring military veterans and achievements were stolen from street corners in the neighbourhood.

On June 12, Romelo Joseph Woolf pleaded guilty to charges connected to the crime. He was sentenced to nine months in jail. After being given credit for time already served while awaiting trial, he will spend the next six months in jail.

“This disrespectful and senseless crime shocked our community last summer,” said Griesbach Community League president Brad Tilley. “We are pleased that this incident is drawing to a close and that Romelo Woolf appears to be taking responsibility for his actions.”

Woolf pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property over $5,000 and fraud under $5,000, as well as three other minor charges connected to an unrelated bike theft.

In addition to the jail time, he was fined $22,000, payable to the City of Edmonton and $523.60 to the scrap dealer he sold the stolen plaques to. However, the Crown prosecutor said Woolf is destitute and will probably never pay these fines.

Unfortunately, police were not able to charge anyone with the actual theft of the plaques. A homeowner's security camera showed footage of three people removing the plaques, but they could not be identified from the video.

All of the stolen plaques have since been replaced and are ready to be enjoyed by the community once again. The Griesbach Community League is happy that the court case is now complete.

CBC has more on the sentencing here. The Star Edmonton, The Edmonton Journal and Global News also wrote about the court case.

Nominate a neighbour for Front Yards in Bloom

The City of Edmonton Front Yards in Bloom program is seeking nominations to celebrate the best front yards in the city. Have a neighbour with a great front yard? Just fill out this form with their address. You can nominate up to five neighbours at a time. All nominees for Front Yards in Bloom receive a sign to put in their yard.

After nominee signs are distributed, the Griesbach Community League parks and gardens director will assemble a panel to judge the yards. The top 12 nominees go on to the next round to be judged by Front Yards in Bloom. City-wide honours are judged and awarded by the Edmonton Horticultural Society in August.

There's a new category this year for tiny yards, less than 600 ft.

Nominations close Saturday, June 30. This is your last week to get those addresses in!
