Take advantage of longer evenings and head outside for one of our outdoor performances – from cinema to opera and lots of family theatre to choose from - we invite you to pack a picnic blanket and hamper and head to one of our many performances this July and August.

Outdoor Theatre

On Saturday 7 July the London based Quantum Theatre company will be visiting Holker Hall with their performance of ‘The Reluctant Dragon’. A pacey, action packed, humorous show for all the family, with live music - a fabulous chance to enjoy an unforgettable alfresco experience in a beautiful stately setting. Show starts at 6pm. Wood fired pizza with salad will available from The Courtyard and can be taken to enjoy whilst you watch the show.
This year Illyria Open Air Touring Theatre returns to Brantwood with two classic productions. Shakespeare’s funny play that deals with serious issues, ‘Merchant of Venice’, on Tuesday 24 July and Hugh Lofting’s children’s classic ‘The Adventures of Dr Dolittle’, a funny, much-loved and exciting family adventure on Tuesday 21 August. The performances take place in Brantwood’s scenic lakeside meadow overlooking Coniston Water and the fells, providing a spectacular back-drop for Illyria’s stage. The Terrace Café will be serving delicious pre-theatre food including take-out hampers, the bar will be open throughout the evening. Gates open at 6pm and the performance starts at 7pm. 
Travelling theatre company, The Three Inch Fools, return to Muncaster Castle on Sunday 5 August with their highly imaginative and vibrantly musical take on Shakespeare's ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ on the castle lawn. There will be a barbecue and bar open close to the performance area for food and drinks before the play and the interval. You are also welcome to picnic. Doors open at 5pm, production starts at 6pm.

Opera in the Ruins

On Saturday 14 July Kirklinton Hall present their 4th 'Opera in the Ruins'. The Regents Opera Company presents ‘The Barber of Seville’. The grounds are open to enjoy picnic in the gardens before-hand, indulge at their champagne bar, then relax and enjoy another fabulous performance. All profits from this fantastic event will go to The British Red Cross. Evening starts at 5pm.

Picnic Cinema

Presented by Eden Arts and recently listed in The Guardian's 'Ten of the Best arts and culture experiences this Spring and Summer' - the best summer party you’ll attend!
Muncaster Castle hosts Picnic Cinema with two classic films on the big screen on the Castle lawn! On Friday 10 August, ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ (15), gets you shaking your groove thing to 70s & 80s disco classics and karaoke favourites. Keep the Picnic Cinema fancy dress tradition! Drag is the thing – flip flops, feathers and crazy hair adornments. On Saturday 11 August, there is ‘The Big Lebowski’ (18), with its eclectic mix of American folk and blues with some Latin American twists. For clothing, we’re looking for relaxed and cardigan heavy, or dressing gowns! The evening’s entertainment begins at 7pm, film starts at dusk (approx 9.00pm). You are welcome to picnic, food and drink is available to buy and the Castle Caféopens at 8am for campers’ breakfasts.

Picnic Cinema returns to Kirklinton Hall on Saturday 18 August with ‘24 Hour Party People’ follows Factory Records Tony Wilson, played by Steve Coogan, and the bubbling music scene through the 80’s in Manchester transformed by New Order, Happy Mondays and The Hacienda night club. (Certificate 18, adults only). Campers entry from 4.30pm. Non-campers entry from 6.30pm, entertainment starts from 7.30pm and film starts at dusk (approx 9.00pm).

Picnic cinema comes to Lowther Castle on Saturday 4th August. A chance to enjoy a cult film in a stunning setting in the outdoors with a picnic. The film to be screened is ‘Sightseers’ (15). This dark comedy follows Chris, who shows his girlfriend some of his favourite sights in the north of England. Non campers entry from 6.00pm, entertainment starts from 8.00pm and film starts at dusk (approx 9.30pm).
There are lots of ideas for inspirational days out, so get planning and enjoy the summer – whatever the weather!
