D1.jobs: New opportunity below at Tennessee. Post your openings in the most-read daily publication in all of college athletics. Get started here.
Now nearly two years into the job, Purdue AD Bobinski says he's passed the evaluation stage and is currently in the "execution and implementation and hopefully moving forward" phase. "One of the things I'm very thankful for is the flexibility of our staff, the willingness of our coaches, our staff, even our athletes to embrace new challenge, new opportunity, higher expectations, new ways of thinking and doing things." He also notes that Purdue is in a good spot when it comes to facilities but says that "you're never done with facility things." Currently, Purdue is preparing to convert the old FB locker room into added academic support space at the Brees Academic and Performance Center, a project which should be complete sometime in the winter. Other projects include adding a video board and revamping the sound system at Ross-Ade Stadium, improving the BB family area and adding an indoor track to Lambert Field House. Bobinski also discussed the school's rivalry with Indiana, observing that neither side is likely obsessing over what the other is doing. He adds: "Obviously, while those games matter, we all have bigger objectives and bigger fish that we're trying to fry. We love our relationship with Indiana, (athletic director) Fred (Glass) is a really great colleague and friend." (link)
A little more than 100 miles south on I-65, Indiana AD Glass offered a snapshot of the IU program, including the possible renewal of its MBB rivalry with Kentucky. If a deal with UK is reached, Glass said it will be attributable to IU HC Miller and UK HC Calipari, adding: "I think that's a rivalry that just needs to be there. Not just for Indiana and Kentucky, but for college basketball generally." To that end, Glass said he is prepared to be "flexible" to add UK back to the schedule and indicated he's "optimistic that before too long we'll be able to do that." Glass also acknowledged that the Men's Soccer facility is probably not befitting of a program with IU's track record, calling it "ridiculous for a program that I believe can lay claim to being the best soccer program in the country." Consequently, Glass expects to make an announcement "soon" concerning major renovations at Armstrong Stadium and Yeagley Field. Asked about the Rice Commission, Glass dismissed criticism from the "peanut gallery," and insisted the commission did a good job. "I would endorse all of their recommendations." (link)
Glass will also be busy hiring a new Baseball HC as Hoosiers skipper Lemonis is the selection at Mississippi State. D1Baseball's Rogers broke the news late last night, pointing to "sources" who clearly are closely connected to the situation in Starkville. (link)
Oregon State Deputy AD for Administration/SWA Vydra, Bowling Green AD Moosbrugger & Holy Cross boss Pine discussed the ins & outs of HC searches during an AthleticDirectorU sit down. Vydra notes the importance of leveraging your network to identify & vet candidates. Moosbrugger: "Make sure to have conversation about who they will hire staff; one of their assistant coaches may very well end up becoming your future head coach. [...] Make your hires quick, but don’t rush to haste decisions. You should have done your research well in advance of having a vacancy." Pine: "Coaching searches are a challenge; you need to have the appropriate balance of speed and strategic due diligence." Lots more. (link)

Sanford Hospital Administrator Krabbenhoft leads the charge for Augustana (DII) to move up to Division I. Krabbenhoft: "The dynamic question is: What does Augie want to become? Not in terms of history or reputation, but size. Do they want to become kind of a Notre Dame-ish organization, or a Creighton? As a private school in this arena, those are kind of the icons or the trailblazers they should try to emulate. And then it's possible. .. You're talking to a guy who found a way to raise $400 million and then nearly $1 billion. And that's just one guy. I'm not just naïvely optimistic. I believe we live in a region and a community up and down I-29 that wants to see these universities succeed — and not just because they are driven by things that bounce and sweat." Prez Herseth Sandlin issued a statement saying it is "time to revisit the Division I topic" and recently hired AD Morton previously helped North Dakota in its transition to Division I. (link)

Clemson AD Radakovich has been handed a mandate from the school's board of trustees, who want to "fill the Hill" inside Memorial Stadium following lackluster student attendance there during the 2017 season. The Hill has a 3,000-ticket allotment, and for several games, including a matchup against Auburn, the area failed to reach capacity. Attendance for the AU game totaled 2,713, while games against Kent State, Boston College and Wake Forest drew just 2,444, 2,062, and 1,539, respectively. To help rectify the problem, Radakovich's staff has been working with student-body President Foley, and Radakovich says a process to ensure the most passionate students gain entry to the Hill is nearly "done and approved by students and everyone on campus." Deputy AD Neff, who has been working directly in concert with Foley, says this "isn't [Radakovich's] new ticketing plan. This is germinated from student leadership that athletics is helping to put in place." (link)
Arkansas State has named Munoz Assoc. AD for Marketing and Fan Engagement. Munoz, who is making her second stop at ASU, comes from Auburn, where she has served in several roles since 2014, including assistant director of marketing. AD Mohajir: "We’re very excited to have Sarah back at Arkansas State. She brings strong experience with her marketing and fan engagement background, and she will be a tremendous asset to our growth." (link); San Diego State has named Lanski Assoc. AD of Compliance. Lanski comes from Cal State-Northridge, where he spent more than two years in the same position following previous stops at Ole Miss and UC Riverside. (link)
The Aspen Institute's Morris, who works as Nike's general manager of global community impact, takes a look at Title IX 46 years after its passage, noting that while it has undoubtedly created more opportunities for girls and women in sports, there is still more to be done. Specifically, Morris notes that while a number of factors have contributed to decreased physical activity among kids, the trend has been especially pronounced among girls, 38% of whom don't participate in sports (compared to 25% among boys). To address this, Morris notes three lessons she has learned that can help buck the trend. First, she calls for "smart program design," whereby programs are designed specifically with girls in mind. This, she says, requires female expertise and coaches to serve as role models. Second, Morris calls for more and better research. "Without a baseline for how many girls are participating in sports...we will not be able to successfully evaluate any of our current efforts." Finally, she calls for "multi-stakeholder" engagement across society. "Title IX Day is more than just a moment for reflection and celebration on how far we’ve come to build gender equity in athletics. It’s a call to action to break down the existing barriers for girls so they can confidently get in the game. Because we know that once they start, they won’t want to stop." (link)
New York Times columnist Branch examines the disparate stances adopted by the NBA and NFL concerning social justice issues, noting that while both leagues and several of their players have publicly rebuked President Trump, the "NFL hasn't recovered. The NBA hasn't looked back." Branch points out several key differences between the leagues, including the NBA's smaller and more unified workforce and the NFL's lack of guaranteed contracts. Meanwhile, the NBA has famously and frequently marketed its star players over the years, while the NFL has focused more on promoting the teams and the league. Former NFL player Pryce: "LeBron James is a bigger brand than the Sacramento Kings. Tom Brady is not as big a brand as the Cleveland Browns." Former NFL exec Lockhart adds: "The superstar players in the NBA are also the leaders in the union, and they have enormous influence and are a very cohesive group." Perhaps most telling, though, have been the divergent responses among commissioners, with the NFL announcing that it will require players on the field to stand during the National Anthem, while NBA Commish Silver has said: "These players in our league, our coaches, are speaking out on issues that are important to them and important to society. I encourage them to do that." (link)
BuzzFeed reporter Kantrowitz examines the resurgence of Twitter, which two years ago was being panned as an aimless social media site with a troll problem, with over 1M people using the hashtag #RIPTwitter over one weekend in February 2016. Instead, Twitter has orchestrated what tech analysts characterize as an "unprecedented" recovery in the Internet space, and Kantrowitz and others cite the site's inextricable link to news as one of, if not the, proximate cause. "As soon as Twitter decided it was a news app, it started investing in its core strengths," such as streaming local newscasts, promoting news stories in its timeline and sending more traffic to publishers. The social media company's foray into live sports streaming has also paid off, even through less popular sports. Former COO Noto: "Our objective is to give our audiences things that they’re passionate about. There’s almost 300,000 followers for some of the professional dart leagues; we can serve that audience just as well as we can Boston Red Sox fans." Meanwhile, investment analyst Nathanson has maintained a sell rating on Twitter stock but acknowledges the company has momentum. "The turnaround stories in digital — they’re narrative based. It’s the hope of tomorrow, the hope of what we see. We always say, every great growth stock needs a story, and people that believe that story. They’ve fixed their growth story." (link)
Idaho State Prez Satterlee is one week into his tenure in Pocatello. Already pointing to funding hurdles: "Our athletic department budget is challenged. We have to find ways to augment that to help us have success in those programs. Athletic programs open up a window to the university for so many people to experience the good things we do through their engagement through athletics, so that’s important." (link)
Don't think I've ever seen this data before & though it's from 2016, it still seems super important. A quintet of professors surveyed 465 student-athletes for a study titled, "Prevalence of clinically elevated depressive symptoms in college athletes and differences by gender and sport." 37.7% of female Track & Field student-athletes had clinical depression, the highest of any individual sport, with Softball second at 30%. (link); Here's the abstract of the study. Next month Utah Men's Lacrosse will transition from a club team to an NCAA-sanctioned sport, ready for Division I competition in the 2018-19 season. Utes will be the first Pac-12 squad, though they will compete independently, and join only Denver and Air Force as NCAA-sanctioned teams west of the Mississippi River. HC Holman: "Even though a little kid may not have heard of Utah, he might have heard of Duke or North Carolina or Maryland because all these teams are playing here. I think once the community sees the highest level of our sport, I think they'll be blown away. ... I think anytime anything is new, it spurs interest, especially with us being the furthest west. It's been a buzz, but the reality is that we have really high expectations. ... The reality is we're gonna recruit the highest level of talent that we think is in the country. Whether they are from California or Baltimore, I don't care." A $15.6M anonymous gift made the jump to Division I possible, starting with eight scholarships next season, but moving to the max 12.6 allowed.  (link)
The Trump administration is closing Title IX cases much more quickly than previous leadership regimes, averaging 88 days during his first year in office & a mere 39 days in the first four months of this year. Comparatively, the Obama administration averaged 150 days, "other than in 2013 when the administration wrapped up cases faster... an average of 78 days." As you might imagine, there's voices on both sides of the situation. Also of note, "Under Mr. Trump’s administration, the percentage of investigations ending in resolution agreements, which lay out policy changes for the institution and include a monitoring period, also fell. Nearly one in 12 cases ended in resolution agreements during Mr. Obama’s tenure, compared with closer to one in 50 under Mr. Trump." More. (link)
Also Noticed: USC gets a $10M commitment from the Epstein family, which will open the Epstein Family Center for Sports Medicine (link); Official collegiate licensed "gameday rings" are now available thanks to Groove U. Yes, seriously. (link); MLB on FOX/FS1 during the first 10 days of the World Cup hasn't slumped: 5-year high on FOX last week, record high on FS1, FOX overnight up 20% compared to 2017 on Saturday night and FS1 had second-best overnight ration of 2018. (link); Minnesota officially broke ground on its new indoor golf training facility on Friday, should be ready for use by the end of the calendar year. Has hitting bays, practice greens, locker rooms, offices, lounges and more. (link); Law360: "A Southern California car dealership has reached a confidential settlement with the National Collegiate Athletic Association to end allegations the dealership ran “March Madness” ads that infringe the NCAA’s trademark covering its spring college basketball tournament. According to court documents filed in California federal court, the parties agreed to resolve the dispute Thursday during an “off the record” settlement conference." (link)
Fast Company features an article from Know Your Company, titled "These are the conversations you need to have as a new manager." In the first meeting, a new manager should: 1) Build trust, don't chart a vision (yet); 2) Get to know your team members - and take notes; 3) Share who you are, more than surface-level stuff; 4) Make it clear that you're in "learning mode"; 5) Ask 2 to 4 probing, thoughtful questions; 6) Be proactive in your next steps; and 7) Be prepared for tough questions. Remember, "every team is different–from who managed the team before you, to the interpersonal dynamics at play, to the challenges that they’re facing with their work." (link)
