Our School Value for Term Two
Respect/
Whakaute
Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This week we are celebrating Matariki.  Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter and for many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. We have a week of planned activities for the students culminating with a hāngi lunch on 27 June. My thanks to Miss Robinson and to our whanau for all the organisation in this regard.

We hosted the NW zone chess competition last week. Our students competed against large intermediate schools like Rangeview and Henderson Intermediate. We did extremely well by winning the Intermediate and Junior sections of the competition. Congratulations to all the chess players.

Our winning streak continued with the NW Mathex competition. Our Year 7 and Year 8 Maths teams came second and first respectively. Congratulations to our Maths students and a big thank you to
Mrs Supeck for coaching the team.

On Friday,  Paid Union meetings will be held for all teachers across West Auckland. The School will remain open with a skeleton staff for students that cannot be collected. As there will only be a skeleton staff, parents are kindly requested to please collect their children at 12.30pm. Buses will be leaving school at 12.45pm, except for Ararimu which will be leaving at the normal time. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Kind regards,

Gary Pasfield
Principal

Waimauku School

We were very lucky to have
Alan Franklin come in to visit some of our classrooms and talk about all things geology.  The children loved seeing his fabulous collection.
Thank you Mr Franklin!

Zara the Zebra came to our
'Be Bright, Be Seen Day'
Thank you Auckland Transport for raising awareness of road safety and zebra crossings.

Student Achievement
We were very fortunate to have another clear day for our Year 3 and 4 Cross Country.  Congratulations to our winners Abby Callaghan, Clay Lincoln, Annabel Webber and Robert Richmond.
Congratulations to Kate Robinson who won a silver medal at the
North Island Wrestling Champs!

Our Mathex students represented the school at the North West Mathex Competition on 14 June. Congratulations to the Year 8 team who won, and our Year 7 Team who placed second.
The school hosted the Helensville/Kaukapakapa/Kumeu Cluster Chess Tournament (Junior) and the Auckland West and Northwest Cluster Chess Tournament (Intermediate) on 15 June.

Our Juniors had a great tournament and qualified for the junior regionals - our B team came first and our A team came second.  Congratulations to Jai
Bilish, Kai Jenks and Ben Searle who came first, second and third respectively and Sabina Altorf who was the top girl player.  Jai won all his games and qualified for the Champions Trophy Competition!

Our Intermediate team also won their competition with Jamie Hunter placing third overall and Amelia Watt topping the girls.
Four Waimauku School teams fought it out at the Book Battle Quiz at Hobsonville Secondary School on June 18.
Our students represented the school very well with a first place for our Y7 & 8 A team, a third place for the Y 7 & 8 B, fifth for Y5 & 6 A and 15th for Y 5&6 B.
Paid Union Meeting
On the afternoon of
Friday 22 June teachers from across West Auckland will be attending an NZEI meeting.  Parents are encouraged to collect children at 12:30pm as there will only be a skeleton staff remaining on site.  All buses except the Ararimu bus will be leaving at 12:45pm, the Ararimu bus will leave at the usual time.

Please note there will be no lunch orders on this day.

Schools Out will be
offering after school care from 12:30pm
if you prefer; to book please call Sandra 027 226 0890.

Ag Day
After considerable thought and discussion with local authorities, and with further advice from the Ministry of Primary Industries, Waimauku School will not be running a calf raising competition at this year's Agriculture Day (Animal Day) on Saturday 27 October.  Though the risk of Mycoplasma Bovis is small, we have been advised that it would be wise not to include the calves in our animal raising competition.
Animals raised for Agriculture Day must be born on or after 01 July, so this will allow those who normally raise a calf, to think about raising a lamb or goat as an alternative this year.
We regret we have had to take this step this year but believe we have to follow the direction we have been given.

ART WORKSHOPS FOR 5 -
15 YEAR OLDS IN THE HOLIDAYS

Creative Matters will once again be running our quality, artist/teacher led art workshops in the July holidays at Kumeu Arts Centre. Tuesday - Friday both weeks from 9am -
3pm. Our workshops are education based and fun with a focus on encouraging creativity. Here at Creative Matters we value the process as much as the product, which is why we run a 6 hour workshop to ensure the creative process is fully developed, incorporating exploration, experimentation, creation and reflection.

This term’s programme also offers a couple of rare opportunities for children to:

1. Exhibit their own drawings in a gallery show

2. Work with an artist in response to her exhibition around NZ wildlife, learning about the topic and the artistic process and then responding with an individual artwork
