All HCS Seniors to Walk Across Stage at Graduation

The following is a message from Principal Shannon Jordan:
"I am so excited to announce that all of our seniors will be walking the stage on Friday at 7! It was a personal goal of mine and we did it together. It was not always easy and I commend our staff, parents, and school community for their determination to rally these seniors to ensure they would make it. Whether they are obtaining a CDOS diploma or the highest of honors, I truly believe partaking in the ceremony of High School graduation will be the fuel of confidence that will create productive citizens, which is the foundation of our work here. "

Special Tribute to Our Retirees

This year we say farewell to four retiring Heuvelton faculty and staff members, as well as one retiring BOCES employee that is as much a part of our family as all the rest. Many thanks to Allen Minckler, Margaret Sweeney, Carol Robert, Kathy Fuller, and Lori Kelley for their many years of service to students!

Allen Minckler, Elementary Physical Education Teacher:  Mr. Allen Minckler is a graduate of the State University of New York at Brockport, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education.  He later completed a Master of Arts in Education from St. Lawrence University.  Immediately following college, Mr. Minckler joined the coaching ranks at Harrisville Central School and Edwards Central School, leading both boy’s and girl’s basketball teams, as well as men’s baseball.  Hired at Heuvelton Central School in 1989, he continued coaching and served as Elementary Physical Education teacher for twenty-nine years.  Mr. Minckler continued his dedication to students outside of the classroom, coaching boy’s soccer, and girl’s basketball and softball, at Heuvelton.

Margaret Sweeney, School Counselor: Mrs. Margaret Sweeney earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, followed by a Master of Education degree in Counseling from St. Lawrence University.  Mrs. Sweeney worked first at SUNY Canton in Residential Life, Admissions, and Financial Aid, prior to joining Edwards-Knox Central School as a School Counselor.  Mrs. Sweeney first got to know Heuvelton students as a substitute teacher during the 193-84 school year, then permanently joined the staff in 1992 as a School Counselor.
In her role, Margaret has helped pave the way for many successful Heuvelton students.

Carol Robert, Elementary Teacher:  Immediately following her graduation from the then State University College of Arts and Sciences at Potsdam with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Elementary Education, Ms. Robert began her teaching career at Trinity Catholic School in Massena.  She later completed a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education, also at Potsdam.  In 1988 she began her thirty year stint as an Elementary teacher at Heuvelton Central School, where she has been a foundation of the elementary team, demonstrating compassion and passion while helping the students of Heuvelton learn.

Kathy Fuller, Secondary Special Education Teacher:  Mrs. Fuller earned an Associates degree in Environmental Technology from Northwestern Connecticut Community College, prior to earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Western Connecticut State College.  She also completed a Master of Science degree in Special Education from SUNY Potsdam.  Mrs. Fuller first became familiar with Heuvelton Central School as a BOCES employee, and later joined the faculty in 1997.  Having supported both middle and high school students in the Resource Room, Kathy will be remembered for her quiet yet persistent support of students, and her efforts to engage both students and staff in the care of our school gardens.

Lori Kelley, Teaching Assistant: Mrs. Kelley has spent many years as a BOCES employee working at Heuvelton Central School, to the point that she is often believed to be a District employee.  Regardless of her employer, Mrs. Kelley is part of the Heuvelton family.  Mrs. Kelley started as a Teaching Assistant for Canton Central School, prior to spending the next twenty years working for BOCES.  For the majority of her tenure with BOCES, she has worked here at Heuvelton.  Her assignments at Heuvelton Central have spanned the Elementary, Middle, and High school grades.  She is known in the community for her work as a chocolatier at Pickens General Store, though at school she will be remembered for her patience and kindness toward students.

Elementary Updates

Pre-K Graduation

Congratulations to our Pre-K graduates! We can't wait to see you in Kindergarten next year!

Ties & Tutus

Throughout the year staff members have the opportunity to recognize students for doing great things at HCS. Mr. Sargent took the time to celebrate at least one student every week and therefore he is the recipient of his very own tutu! Congratulations to our student ties & tutus recipients: Korbyn Johnston, Mason Gleeson, Olivia LaRue & Annabella Brown

Library Award

Connor Young
received the 2017-18 Reading Award! The following is from Librarian Joan Fischer:
"It is my pleasure to present this award to a well-deserving young man, who exhibits an outstanding love of reading.  This fourth grader can be found with his nose in a book during any spare moment, whether at school or home. At the start of the school year, Connor quickly reached the Dream Catcher status of 50 points, and from there on, he continued to reach goal after goal, and eventually going off the chart. Since he would finish a book in record time, Connor was granted unlimited access to the library. With his points increasing so quickly, Mrs. Mitchell challenged him to reach 1,000 points by the end of the school year. I am very proud to say that he took that challenge seriously, as he earned an incredible 878 points with an average of 95%. The joy he finds in reading is truly inspirational and a gift that will last a lifetime!"

1st Grade Field Trip

Our first grade classes went to the Rosamond Zoo in Syracuse.  They had the dinosaur invasion set up.  The kids were ecstatic as the dinosaurs were life size, animated, sprayed water and made noises.

AmVets Contest

The Heuvelton AMVETS holds a contest each year to celebrate the understanding of Americanism. This year's theme was "What does the constitution mean to you?" Many students were awarded for their entries and received a certificate and goodie bag.

Trap Team Updates

The Heuvelton Central school trap team competed at States in Bridgeport, NY on June 9th.  Nine shooters joined the other 640 students from around the state and did well for their inaugural year.  The team took third place, out of 42 teams, in the Jr. Varsity level with Senior Michael Pray taking 2nd place in the high shooters.  Michael shot one perfect round and ended the day with hitting 94 of 100 targets.  John Wrobel, Trent Weston, Jack Lake, Kyle Ceresoli, Loren Putman, Reid Doyle, Dan Pray and John Trathan all shot extremely well with a few students shooting their best round. The team missed having Brandon Pray, Ross Leader and Dawson Marino.  A special thanks to the coaching group of Randy Pray, David Doyle, Jim Rheome, Cindi Fredrick, James Fredrick, John Trathen and John Ceresoli, who made the trip down to lead the team. Thanks also goes to all the parents, grandparents and supporters that showed up to cheer the team on.
