BRING Tour

AOR's 40^th Annual Sustainable Oregon 2018 Conference in Eugene offered a tour of BRING, a Central Oregon-based nonprofit dedicated to changing attitudes and behaviors regarding waste. Focusing on consumption, climate change and community resiliency, the program works to provide vision, leadership and tools for living well on the planet we all share. Created in 1971, BRING is one of the nation’s oldest non-profit recyclers, encouraging people to rethink what they use and what they throw away. 

Emily Shelton, BRING Education and Events Manager, led conference attendees along winding garden pathways bordered by native vegetation and creative container and trellised plantings.  The path led from one highly innovative area to another, from beautiful garden with creative trellis designs and native plantings to the Planet Improvement Center where reuse materials were clean, sorted, and organized and ready for sale.  The wide selection of salvaged and surplus building materials, garden supplies, Metro Paint, and other reusable items made it a little tempting to deviate from the tour to shop!

Division/Clinton Street Fair

'Tis the season for Street Fairs! Make sure you join in on some of the great Portland neighborhood celebrations and enjoy our local businesses and mingle with the neighbors and visitors. Come on down to the Division/Clinton Street Fair & Parade on Sunday July 22nd. Look for us under the green tent at our BYOC campaign booth, located with other community non-profits!  Of course we will be in the parade! 
 
The fun starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 5:00 p.m.  The fair will be centered at the lively intersection of 26th and Clinton and goes from 25th to 28th between SE Clinton and Division. Look for businesses along Division between 11th and 50th to be in party mode. Lots to eat, drink, learn and do. The parade begins at 10:45 a.m. on 50th and Division, and moves down to 27th and Clinton.

• I purchased beer in growlers. 
• I brought reusable containers to the Fred Meyer and filled them with humus and olives at the olive bar.
• I didn’t want to buy chips because of the packaging, so brought my reusable bag to Grand Central Bakery and purchased a loaf of sliced bread.  They gave me $.10 discount and compliments for bringing my own bag.
• I purchased Oregon grown hazelnuts in bulk at Sheridan’s Market at 409 SE Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.  I also purchased bulk sesame sticks and trail mix while I was there.  I brought my own reusable bags
• I stuffed dates with walnuts, purchased in bulk. 

• School supplies including clothes, backpacks, folders and paper products
• Office and art supplies including pens, pencils and markers

• Household batteries sizes AAA through D 
• Computers and electronics
