BRING Tour
By Bonita Davis, RA Board Member

BRINGAOR's 40th Annual Sustainable Oregon 2018 Conference in Eugene offered a tour of BRING, a Central Oregon-based nonprofit dedicated to changing attitudes and behaviors regarding waste. Focusing on consumption, climate change and community resiliency, the program works to provide vision, leadership and tools for living well on the planet we all share. Created in 1971, BRING is one of the nation’s oldest non-profit recyclers, encouraging people to rethink what they use and what they throw away.

Emily Shelton, BRING Education and Events Manager, led conference attendees along winding garden pathways bordered by native vegetation and creative container and trellised plantings.  The path led from one highly innovative area to another, from beautiful garden with creative trellis designs and native plantings to the Planet Improvement Center where reuse materials were clean, sorted, and organized and ready for sale.  The wide selection of salvaged and surplus building materials, garden supplies, Metro Paint, and other reusable items made it a little tempting to deviate from the tour to shop!

Plastic Straw Ban Update

Last month we reported that the UK government was developing plans to ban all sales of single-use plastics, including plastic straws. Closer to home, Seattle's ban on plastic straws, utensils and cocktail picks goes into effect on July 1st, covering all Seattle businesses that sell food or drinks, and we're hearing about similar initiatives around the country.

Just yesterday afternoon Portland City Council adopted a resolution instructing the city Bureau of Planning and Sustainability to come up with a plan to "reduce single-use non-recyclable plastics", and plastic straws in particular.

You can read the resolution HERE. We notice that the word "ban" is not used, only "reduction in use", but it's a step in the right direction.
Do Just One Thing: Entertain Without Disposable Waste
By Holly Hummel, RA Treasurer

HollyIf you are reading this article, we’d like to invite you to our next Recycling Advocates board meeting, and for that matter, all board meetings. We do great stuff and could use your help.  Plus, we enjoy nice munchies and beer and wine at the meetings. Come say hello and see what we are all about. Our next board meeting will be on July 9th at 6:30 pm in NE Portland, RSVP and we’ll send you the address.

Last month, it was my turn to host and I decided to see if I could do it without buying packaged food.  Here’s how I did it.
  • I purchased beer in growlers.
  • I brought reusable containers to the Fred Meyer and filled them with humus and olives at the olive bar.
  • I didn’t want to buy chips because of the packaging, so brought my reusable bag to Grand Central Bakery and purchased a loaf of sliced bread.  They gave me $.10 discount and compliments for bringing my own bag.
  • I purchased Oregon grown hazelnuts in bulk at Sheridan’s Market at 409 SE Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.  I also purchased bulk sesame sticks and trail mix while I was there.  I brought my own reusable bags
  • I stuffed dates with walnuts, purchased in bulk.
So, the lesson I learned from this is that there is a lot of food out there that can be purchased in bulk without disposable waste.  So, for me it was a matter of making a choice to not buy the packaging.

BTW, if you haven’t been to Sheridan Fruit Company lately, they have a rocking bulk department.  You can purchase in bulk everything from spices, to grains, dried fruit, tea, chocolates and other candy.  They also have a wonderful butcher counter.
