JUNETEENTH: REMEMBERING AND CELEBRATING FREEDOM
On Sunday, June 17th, HNHS celebrated Juneteenth, commemorating the declaration of freedom for the millions of people of African descent in bondage. The original decree was made in April 1865 with the surrender of General Lee; however, the bondsmen, women and children in Texas did not receive this liberating information until June 19, 1865 (two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation). This lively event, with approximately 50 participants, celebrated African American freedom and achievement, and encouraged continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. Events included storytelling in the African oral tradition by Mama Linda Goss, co-founder of the Griots' Circle of Maryland and National Association of Black Storytellers and National Park Ranger Anokwale and African drumming and dancing by the Kuer Khaleyi African Dance Company.

Notes from the Garden
by Ranger Brooke Derr, Horticulturalist
A big THANK YOU to Federated Garden Clubs, District III for supporting the Garden Internship Program for the 6th year in a row. Alex Wiitala accepted the position of Garden Intern a few weeks ago and is quickly learning her way around the gardens at Hampton NHS. She is a graduate of Harford County Community College with an associate’s degree in History. She recently took a critical look at her current career and decided to ‘look around’ for a better fit. This fall she will be taking a series of introductory horticulture classes offered by the Community College of Baltimore County.
Other news…
OH! When will the sun ever shine? The annuals are doing pretty well, but the cloudy weather is slowing down flower production on some plants. The white coneflower and red bee balm are just now opening up on the second terrace.

Both the Bee Balm 'Jacob Kline' and the Coneflower 'White Swan' (above) are native to our area and attract butterflies, hummingbirds and pollinating insects.

70th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
On June 22, 1948, Hampton officially became a unit of the National Park Service. The designation of the site was a historic one for the service as Hampton was the first site to be preserved by the NPS based on architectural merit rather than its connection to a famous historic event or individual. On Friday, June 22nd, HNHS celebrated this landmark by offering tours of the 18th century mansion, as well as special architectural and garden tours that highlight Hampton’s significance as a national park. In the afternoon, Rangers, volunteers, and visitors enjoyed slices of anniversary cake, courtesy of Cathy Michael and the Women's Committee of Historic Hampton, Inc.
