State Board completes review and approval process

At its June meeting, the State Board of Education approved the revisions for the content areas of reading, writing and communication, comprehensive health and physical education and science.

The June vote completes the revision process for the Colorado academic standards. Development of the extended evidence outcomes, Colorado's alternate achievement standards for students with significant cognitive disabilities will now be undertaken.

All final revisions, including amendments, are posted on the standards review and revision homepage.

 Implementation of the standards

Districts will have two years to review and revise their local standards as needed with implementation scheduled for the 2020-21 school year.

The department anticipates that final versions of approved standards, as well as an online standards system, will be available in August. At the same time, CDE will release information regarding support for implementation of the standards. Support is being designed to take advantage of the transition time allotted for implementation to help ensure the smoothest transition possible. CDE staff will lead a session at the CASE Convention on Thursday, July 26, at 1:45 p.m. where attendees can learn more.

CDE will also use that time to begin the process for seeking input regarding implementation options for the science standards. This will be in addition to feedback sessions conducted throughout the state to help determine the best approach for the updated requirements with this revision due to the incorporation of the Next Generation Science Standards into the science standards.

Alignment to Colorado Measures of Academic Success

The Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments will be reviewed for their alignment to the revised standards and any needed adjustments will be made accordingly with inclusion in the scored assessments expected no earlier than 2020-21.

Approaches to revisions may differ across the content areas and/or grades depending on the level of modification required.

Any needed revisions to CoAlt are anticipated to be reflected on the same schedule as CMAS.
The review and revision process is required by Senate Bill 08-212, known as Colorado’s Achievement Plan for Kids (CAP4K). The law requires a review and revision of the Colorado Academic Standards on or before July 1, 2018, and every six years thereafter.
