Nutrition Labelling, Claims and Communication Strategies

Nutrition labelling, as well as nutrition and health claims, are important tools to communicate the nutritional quality and health benefits of a food product to consumers. They provide point-of-sale information to help consumers make informed choices. This 1.5-day seminar will provide an update on regional developments and regulatory changes in nutrition labelling, nutrition and health claims, and related issues in Southeast Asia and other regions. The seminar will also discuss the use of nutrition information panel (NIP), front-of-pack (FOP) and claims as communications tools and how they can help make a change in consumer behaviour. Additionally, the seminar will address scientific substantiation of claims, and efforts towards and challenges faced in harmonization of nutrition labelling in the ASEAN region.

Update on Safety Assessment and Perspectives on Regulatory Development of GM Food Crops and New Plant Breeding Technologies

This workshop will identify data gaps that can be addressed to help determine if alterations in the gut microbiome have an effect on health. The workshop aims to:
- Discuss and review the current science on the gut microbiome and identify areas of interest regarding its role in human health
- Discuss our understanding on how xenobiotic toxicity affects the microbiome
- Understand if there are biomarkers of disease or organ damage due to:
- alterations of microbiome structure and function
- endogenous microbial metabolites

This symposium will specifically focus on clinical aspects and novel strategies developed to determine whether diet and nutrients have efficacy in individuals affected by dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions. The symposium will explore the main themes:
- Impact of nutrition on brain functions using neuroimaging technologies
- Microbiome and immune status: impact on brain function
- (Bio)markers of food intake and cognitive health
- Sleep deprivation: effects on diet and cognitive performance
- New methodologies applied to dementia and how nutrition could play a role
