Puanga Kairau - ko Puanga te hua o te tau

Puanga signals the beginning of the new year within Taranaki.

For those living to the west of the maunga Puanga (or the star Rigel) comes up over the maunga first, in the morning sky on the north eastern horizon followed closely by Matariki.

Puanga was a time of acknowledging the previous year including those who had passed. The pataka were full after harvest the winter months were upon us and this time was spent in wānanga mode in the wharenui keeping warm and strategising for future activities learning waiata, exchanging whakapapa and kōrero.

Puanga was also a time to prepare the garden for the spring as Puanga and other stars were a way of guiding our people in agricultural activities. But ultimately Puanga was a time to celebrate a new year, new growth and new opportunities and our celebration was with karakia, haka, ngeri, waiata and hakari it was festive and uplifting

Kei aku whanunga e mihi ana i runga i te putanga mai o Puanga Kairau.

TRUSTEE ELECTIONS 2018

Call for nominations

Te Kāhui o Taranaki Trust (the Trust) is the PSGE entity established to receive and manage the Treaty settlement assets of Taranaki Iwi.

It replaces the former Taranaki Iwi Trust. The trust is governed by seven trustees who are elected on a rotational basis.

There are two vacancies for this year’s elections;
Dennis Ngawhare must retire by rotation and is eligible to stand for re-election if he chooses and David Tamatea who passed away during this last term.

The Trust now invites nominations to fill these two positions.

Nominations must be made on an official nomination form and close at 5pm on Thursday 19 July 2018.

If more than two valid nominations are received, elections will be held by postal and internet voting with both voting periods closing at 5pm on Friday 14 September 2018.

The Trust also takes this opportunity to invite all adults of Taranaki Iwi descent who have not already registered, to do so by completing a registration form.

Maunga Negotiations Update

Negotiations over Taranaki maunga have been progressing steadily over recent weeks with the negotiations team meeting with Ministers on the maunga back in April as well as hosting negotiations update hui with iwi and their members.

Since the signing of the Record of Understanding document between the Crown and Ngā Iwi o Taranaki back in December 2017 the focus of negotiations has been addressing matters that were not covered in the document and working through the details associated with the various redress mechanisms. These details include determining the purpose and governance functions of a joint governance entity for Ngā Iwi o Taranaki, Ngā Iwi o Taranaki aspirations, the nature of the relationships between local authorities and Ngā Iwi o Taranaki, and any other cultural redress agreed to by the various groups involved.

As part of the cultural redress being negotiated, names and name changes are being sought. These include changes to the name "Egmont National Park", names of the various peaks on each of the maunga in the National Park, geographical features, and site names. Granting legal personality status to ngā maunga is also a part of the redress being negotiated.

Over the coming months the negotiations team are looking at running engagement hui around the motu, as they did in the initial stages of negotiations, and will be setting those dates shortly.

The 2018 Māori Electoral Option will be held from

Tuesday 3 April until Thursday 2 August.

This is when Māori voters can choose whether to be on the Māori or the General Roll.

It's an important choice for anyone of Māori descent. It will determine which roll type Māori voters will be on for the next two general elections.

The results of the Māori Electoral Option, together with the results of the 2018 Census, will be used to determine the number and boundaries of General and Māori Electorates for the 2020 and 2023 elections.

How you can help?

The Electoral Commission are asking for your support to help spread the word about the Māori Electoral Option.

You could consider displaying posters or brochures at your office, workplace or community centre, or sharing resources on social media, on your website, in newsletters or direct communications.
