In what likely surprised many around the industry, former UC Davis & current Claremont McKenna-Harvey-Mudd Scripps (DIII) AD Tumey gets the nod at Fresno State. No additional comment from the Bulldogs camp other than Prez Castro's tweet welcoming Tumey to the fold. Full presser set for Monday. (link)
NCAA Prez Emmert earned over $2.4M in calendar year 2016, a raise of nearly $500K over the previous year. While Emmert's base salary increased by 42%, his retirement and other deferred compensation for 2016 decreased by $200K as compared to what was reported in 2015 and in the previous four years. Meanwhile, the remainder of his overall compensation was comprised of taxable benefits that are neither salary nor base pay totaling $290,185, about $70K more than the largest previous amount he had recorded. Aside from Emmert, the NCAA has disclosed that 10 other executives earned over $415K in 2016, including VP Championships and Alliances Lewis, who brought in $1.7M. Emmert is under contract until 2020. (link)
Michigan is projecting a $2.5M surplus for FY19, according to the operating budget presented by AD Manuel yesterday, which shows operating revenues of $187.8M and operating expenses of $185.3M. Highlight: $52.1M expected from the Big Ten, up from $36.3M in 2017. The $2.5M surplus exceeds the budgeted $2M projection thanks to higher than expected demand in preferred seating contributions, licensing revenues, and the school's participation in the Amazon "All or Nothing" docu-series. The report also projects that other revenues will decrease from last year's $15.8M to $7.9M as a result of having no neutral site FB game (U-M opened last season against Florida in Dallas). The department will transfer $3M to a deferred maintenance fund to address facilities needs. Last year, the department transferred $4M. (link, link)
The facility overhaul plans at Virginia could easily top $100M+ in total, but Cavs AD Williams is adamant such an investment is needed to keep UVA at the forefront of broad-based success. Women's LAX HC Myers: "I think now that we know there’s a new future to look forward to, I think we can look at it and say, 'Wow, we really need more.' But I think people at Virginia have always done a good job making what we have seem like it’s just enough, like it’s perfect. So we didn’t waste much time complaining about U-Hall. [...] When you travel around and you see what other programs have and what other departments have been building over the last 8-10 years, Virginia very slowly fell off, for Olympic sports, the cutting edge. So I do think this new project will help us not only catch up, but probably even pass some of our opponents." Williams says the presentation to the university's Board of Visitors went well, glad to have received quick approval to make needed upgrades to U-Hall & believes it shows a commitment for excellence in all areas. (link)
Florida Atlantic AD White outlines all the attractive elements of a university & athletics portfolio in Boca Raton, but balances with, "I wouldn’t mistake comfort for complacency. We have to roll up our sleeves because we have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of things we can get better at but very comfortable that we’re in the right place. This place has tremendous potential. This place can really rise quickly and have a lot of success across the board." White says the decision to lower FB concession prices was all about the "feel-good" & as another way to put butts in seats. (link); White also on the wire for inking FB HC Kiffin to a new contract that could keep him with the Owls through 2027. Base of $950K is complemented by a slew of incentives ranging from $50K for ending the season in the Top 25 to $10K for an APR of 940 or better to $1M for three straight years finishing in the Top 10. More. (link)
Northern Illinois' Frazier back in his corner, touches on fundraising & revenue efforts for the Huskies. The Huskie Athletic Fund did $2.221M in FY18, up substantially from last year's $1.394M. Additional revenue streams totaled $3.161M, up year over year by ~$270K with a notable $250K gift to the 'Campaign to Sustain' now also officially committed. Frazier includes a proposed layout of the Nelson Club in the piece. Learfield's Huskie Sports Properties hit its goal of $1.11M. Additional revenue figures included. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Middle Tennessee Assoc. AD for Communications Owens & members of his team trekked 2,300 miles west to visit with Facebook staff. Owens: "A big reason I went out there was because our conference is kind of like the guinea pig for Facebook; that's why they're putting so many of our games on Facebook. They've teamed with Stadium. The production is just like a CBS Network production, which also will have some of our games, but it's on Facebook because that's where things are going. They have sideline reporters, announcers and analysts, just like you're used to." One key takeaway was learning how to retarget FB users who click 'like' on Blue Raiders content for future marketing campaigns. (link)

Former Arkansas Women's Golf standout & current LPGA pro Lewis pulls back the curtain a bit on how the recent AD search for the Razorbacks went down. Lewis: "Truthfully, I don't know exactly who but I know a lot of people said 'no' just because of the way thing went down with Jeff (Long) leaving. We were in a position where we were going down lists instead of maybe our first choice." Interestingly, Lewis is married to Houston Women's Golf HC Chadwell, and recommended then-Cougars boss Yurachek for the post in Fayetteville, but didn't find out he was getting the job until being informed by her husband, not from the search committee. "The chancellor, at the end, he made the call." (link)
Attorneys for former UConn MBB HC Ollie again pushback on reasons why the university terminated their client's contract. Now there's this in connection to allegations of $30K being provided to a prospective student-athlete's mother to find a house & Ollie switching from CAA's Just due to Just not routing him players, "Both of these false claims originate with Glen Miller who was fired by Coach Ollie. To be clear: the University of Connecticut did not rely upon these false claims as cause to terminate Coach Ollie because there is no truth to what Glen Miller claims." Miller is, of course, a former AC for the program. First public comments I've seen on Miller's rumored involvement in Ollie's situation. A bit more. (link)
During a presser in Omaha to announce a Royals-Tigers game in TD Ameritrade Park next season leading up to the College World Series, MLB Commish Manfred also touched on a potential location change for the league's annual draft, "We have talked, thought and talked to the NCAA about it. We do see the potential of the idea of bringing the draft to the site of the College World Series. It’s one way — there may be others — to rationalize the baseball calendar. Obviously, the draft’s a much better property when you have a lot of players present. And there are a lot of players here. So it’s something that we will continue to discuss." (link)
Former NFL GM & noted talent evaluator Steele points to 7-on-7 summer high school football influencing the college game & even up into the pro ranks. The selection of former Oklahoma student-athlete Mayfield as the #1 pick in April's Draft supports the theory, "People are really going to be watching this one closely, because if this works long-term, it's going to open the door for more quarterbacks with a similar background to have a real opportunity." Popular spread offenses have links to 7-on-7 as former NFL & NCAA AC Shea notes, "There are so many more quarterbacks coming through the evolution of that game, and it all starts in high school." (link)
Baseball HCs: Pitt AD Lyke will hire a new boss for the Panthers with the pending exit of 21-year skipper Jordano. The selection will be Lyke's seventh HC move in her 14 months on the job. (link); Suppose this means there's little chance Auburn HC Thompson could be moving west to Starkville as Tigers AD Greene inks Thompson to an extension through the 2024 campaign. No word on a potential increase to his $350K annual base pay. (link); North Carolina's Fox expects to sign a new deal in the coming days to continue leading the Tar Heels. Fox: "It's just a formality. It's all good. It's just timing and getting some paperwork at this point. It's not anything I'm concerned about." (link); Tennessee Tech AD Wilson stays home, promotes AC Holmes to replace new Rice HC Bragga. (link)
More Personnel: Arkansas FB HC Morris pens his official contract in Fayetteville. Base of $3.5M with the opportunity to earn another $1M in competition-based bonuses & $200K for academic achievements. (link); SEC Network headliner Finebaum is negotiating a new contract with ESPN, but his current deal expires at the end of July & there's talk in the industry he may become a free agent. (link); Albany AD Benson & his team select Wagner Women's LAX HC Rowan to take over the Great Danes' program. (link); Bellarmine AD Wiegandt recruits Rutgers AC Michell back to Louisville to take the reigns of Men's LAX for the Knights. (link); Southern Illinois Prez Dunn hangs on again, survives Board of Trustees vote of 4-4, will continue to lead the institution. (link)
Alcohol sales are not likely to become part of the tradition in Death Valley anytime soon, according to Clemson AD Radakovich, who said this week that it "hasn't been a huge topic of conversation," nor is it on CU's list of priorities. Radakovich has held fast to his vision of maintaining Memorial Stadium's family-friendly environment over the years, as has FB HC Swinney, both whom argue that the Tigers' on-field performance has provided plenty of incentive to fill the seats. Still, Radakovich acknowledged that "our people in the parking lot have a good time," but "inside the stadium, I think it's a little different." He also characterized the alcohol situation as "unique as a snowflake at each individual institution." (link)
More from Southern Utah AD Corum, who had three words to describe the importance of signing FB HC Warren to a five-year extension: "Huge. Huge. Huge." In part two of her interview with The Spectrum, Corum identified watching Warren hoist the trophy after winning last year's Big Sky title one of the most memorable moments of her first year as AD. The top moment, however, was watching a FB student-athlete walk across the stage and accept his diploma: "I started bursting into tears. I didn't think he was going to do it. He had every reason not to do it, all the odds were against him, and when he walked across that stage it was one of my proudest moments." Regarding Warren, Corum notes that coaching stability is one of the common factors among all top programs, so hearing him say he wanted to stay was "one of the best things I could have ever heard." Corum also said she did her research to see where Warren fit in among other top 10 FCS schools, adding: "I have a plan that I want to make sure that we don’t take advantage of him because he wants to stay here, that we continue to pay him in a comparable way for what his accomplishments are." Finally, Corum defines success in FB as being perennially in the hunt for a Big Sky title while earning a playoff berth. In MBB, she'd like the team to "be in the top quarter of the league and feel like every year we have a shot to win the tournament." Full interview. (link)
NCHC Commish Fenton & WCHA Women's boss Million both raise questions about the rules committee's recommendation to do away with 3-on-3 overtimes & shootouts in favor of games staying tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 OT period. Million: "It's also the entertainment value, and we want our fans to be happy, too. That's one thing that the rules committee — and I didn't sit in on those meetings, so I don't know — but how much of that came into play in making their decision?" Fenton believes East Coast leagues & fans would love the 3-on-3 OT format, "I think (3-on-3) is good and beneficial for the growth of the game. I would continue to encourage fans, media members, student-athletes to voice their opinion and beliefs on the overtime structure through social media or otherwise." (link)
Remember the Missouri State MBB student-athletes who were injured in the cryotherapy treatment session? Well, we may never learn more details about the situation since an investigation into the incident was part of the university's general counsel's work, thus making them exempt from Sunshine Laws. One of the two student-athletes impacted will sit out the 2018-19 season in Springfield as a result of his injuries & the other transferred to Middle Tennessee. (link)
Texas A&M Prez Young updates on progress made in College Station this week in follow-up to the university's review of sexual assault cases & policies on campus. Of note, Husch Blackwell LLP will conduct an audit of all Title IX sexual assault investigation practices. Executive leaders on campus also take on key roles in the process. More. (link); The Michigan Attorney General's Office says Michigan State continues to withhold key information connected to its Nassar probe. Next step: Leveraging a search warrant to gain access to communications & other key pieces of correspondence. (link)
Also Noticed: The Mountain West & Teamworks join hands. (link); Time to build for Southern Miss & its new Volleyball digs. (link); A new season FB ticket option at UNLV includes an all-you-can-eat feature. $79 per ticket. Rebels AD Reed-Francois says the move was in response to fan feedback. (link); St. Francis (NY) is adding Men's Volleyball. (link); Alabama will receive $4.5M for its FB season-opener in Orlando against Louisville. The Cards, meanwhile, will get $2.75M. Bama agreed to purchase 18K tickets, 10K for U of L.(link); Instagram's long-form video product/strategy is now in the market. (link); Mississippi will begin accepting sports bets on July 21. Yet another state taking the plunge. (link)
Do you build strategic planning & strategic thinking time into your weekly schedule? If not, you should. Duke professor Clark argues leaders must give up the "self esteem benefits of being busy" for structured blocks of uninterrupted time to think about & plan for the future. Key quote from productivity expert Allen, "You don’t need time to have a good idea, you need space…. It takes zero time to have an innovative idea or to make a decision, but if you don’t have psychic space, those things are not necessarily impossible, but they’re suboptimal." More. (link)
