BUILDING COMMUNITIES
CAMPAIGN, ELECTION SEASON & 2018 LEGISLATIVE RECAP

Campaign & Elections
In Florida, the 2018 election campaigns are fully underway.  The people elected make decisions which affect citizens of Florida for both the short and long term. This matters to you, as a resident, as well as a YMCA.

Following our year-round advocacy plan, it is important to know who the candidates running for each position are. They could be volunteers, members, or donors.
A normal campaign season will run as followed:

  • May - August: Primary Election, Election Day: August 28
  • August - November: General Election, Election Day:  November 6
As we get further into campaign season you will see more people get involved in the political process. This involvement can include comments on social media, door knocking, registering voters, or donating money, and a variety of similar activities.

Ys, as 501(c)(3) organizations, have to be careful. Under IRS rules, a 501(c)(3) cannot engage in the  political process the same way as an individual or a for-profit corporation.

For help on this, check out Y-USA Campaign & Elections Do's and Don'ts.

If you have any questions, please contact the Florida Alliance of YMCAs.

Summer Campaign
Summer is the perfect time to engage public officials. Invite public officials to see your Safety Around Water program, Summer Camps, or tour the YMCA to get a better understanding on the Ys role in their community.

INSPIRING CHANGE
NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY

National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) takes place each year on the fourth Tuesday of September. It's sponsored by the bipartisan National Association of Secretaries of State.

YMCA of the USA has signed on as a partner of NVRD and encourages Ys to hold voter registration drives on or around Sept. 25.
Falling two weeks before the first state registration deadlines for the November election, NVRD is a great day to register new voters and celebrate democracy.

Starting in July you can sign up as an NVRD partner and receive free materials.

A toolkit and resources for local Y participation will also be available in July.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

U.S. Soccer Foundation

Since 1995, the  U.S. Soccer Foundation  has awarded grants to more than six hundred organizations in the United States in support of projects designed to keep children in underserved communities active, healthy, and safe. Urban areas often lack available space for children to play outside. In order to provide an opportunity for all children to play soccer, the foundation has taken on the task of providing children across the nation with places to play.

To that end, the foundation is accepting Letters of Inquiry for its Safe Places to Play program, which provides grants to organizations to help them build or enhance a field space in their communities. Grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded for the installation of field surfaces, lighting, and irrigation for field space in urban settings.

To be eligible, an applicant must apply on behalf of a program or project operating in the U.S., and be a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, school, municipality, college or university, or sovereign tribal nation.

LOIs are must be received no later than September 3. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application by September 28, 2018.

Through the program, a prize of $500 will be awarded to a school or youth group to advance the sustainability of a successful youth garden program that has impacted the lives of kids and their community. Applicants must submit a chronicle of their project, including photographs and descriptions.

To be eligible, applicants must be a school or youth group with existing garden program involving youth in grades K-12. The program will not consider proposals for gardens that do not yet exist.
