The Japantown Chounaikai was created to strengthen the San Francisco Bay Area Japanese community by bringing together Japanese born in Japan and Japanese born in America. To assist newly arriving Japanese from Japan, Japantown Chounaikai plans on regularly hosting welcoming events. The events would provide opportunities to network, to become acquainted with various Japanese-related organizations in the Bay Area, and to learn about Japanese American history. To assist in the strengthening of of the Japanese American community in San Francisco, we will encourage Japanese from Japan to bring new ideas to the existing Japanese American community and thereby ensure San Francisco's Japantown continues to be an exciting place for people to visit and continues to stay true to cultural traditions. Let's get together in hopes of building a stronger unified community and celebrate our great culture.
Chounaikai means "Neighborhood Association" in Japanese. Many cities in Japan have a Chounaikai, each consisting of approximately 30 to 50 families. Chounaikai members help each other and contribute to the neighborhood in different ways including street cleaning, organizing festivals, patrolling the neighborhood, educating children, and supporting businesses. It is the smallest social entity yet very important to the residents.
