Foster Care
The Every Student Succeeds Act included several new provisions to promote educational stability for our students in foster care. The intention of these provisions is to increase collaboration among DESE, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and schools and districts in support of the nearly 7,500 students in foster care in the Commonwealth. DESE and DCF have published joint guidance on implementing the new provisions of the law and are piloting regional networking sessions this spring. Additional guidance, compilations of promising practices and other resources and tools will be developed over time to support this work.

MIC3
Did you know that the military connected student will attend six to nine schools during their K-12 Education? Because these students experience high mobility, resulting in educational interruption, the Department is committed to provide them the support they need to succeed in their education. As a result, Massachusetts is a member of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3). Our goals are to ensure the timely enrollment and proper placement of students, as well as the on-time graduation of our students.

Wrapping Up the 17/18 Data Collection
ALL districts must report identified homeless and foster care students. ALL liaisons and foster care points of contact (including those that did not identify any students) must review the homeless and foster care student data for accuracy in the security portal and then certify/submit it to close out the annual data collection. The certify/submit functions will be operational on Friday, June 8th and will remain available through July 20th, 2017.
Guidance on Homeless and Foster Care Student Data Collection has been updated and is posted on the Educational Stability webpage.

A regional homeless liaison near you!
This fall we will be introducing experienced liaisons who will be available to surrounding districts to provide technical assistance, guidance on best practices, training, and mentoring for district liaisons. This network of regional liaisons will be coordinated with DESE and will have greater flexibility and knowledge of local resources.
