Celebrating the International Day of the African Child (16 June)

© UNICEF/UN060947/Ramasomanana – Children in a primary school in Madagascar.

Since 1991, the Day of the African Child is celebrated on 16 June to commemorate the courageous children in Soweto, South Africa who marched in 1976 to protest apartheid and to demand equal education.

About ten thousand black school children marched protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language. More than a hundred people were killed in the protests of the following two weeks, and more than a thousand were injured.

Every year, thousands of people all over Africa gather to raise awareness of the need for improvement of the education provided to African children and the importance of the full realization of their rights.

Inspiring actions from GNRC members

Workshop with children, organized by GNRC Tanzania

Many young members of GNRC in Africa are being part of the commemorations for the Day of the African Child. Our friends in Somalia will be conducting awareness gatherings on child rights with the participation of children, youth, and adults; while our friends in South Africa will host a soccer game involving children who live in the streets.

As part of their activities, our friends from GNRC Tanzania organized a workshop with 22 children on 11 June to reflect on the importance of the realization of children's rights. They are preparing more activities with children and their parents for this Saturday 16 June.

What about you? Are you in Africa and planning to commemorate this important day in your country? Let us know what you will be doing. We would love to hear from you!!

Ready to welcome new GNRC friends!

Until now the Youth Zone has been a closed group only for children who participated in the GNRC 5th Forum in Panama. During these months we have learned from one another, shared how we have been engaged locally in our GNRC groups to End Violence Against Children, and about the other Arigatou International Initiatives and their actions.

However, around the world, there are many more GNRC children who are active locally in their groups, bringing positive transformations to their communities.   We think that we are all ready to welcome all of them to be part of this online platform and we count on you to support us with this process!
A webinar from children to children:

To introduce the Youth Zone to new children and to explain to them how this interactive online group works, we are planning to organize a Webinar. A webinar is like an online meeting where people can come together, share, talk, and learn more about each other.

To organize this Webinar, we are counting on you! We think the members of the Youth Zone, like you, should be the ones moderating this webinar: introducing the platform to the new members, sharing about your experience in Panama, how you have been engaged locally since then, and support identifying tools and materials you may need to continue your projects and ideas locally. We can’t make it without you, this is your space!

Would you like to moderate this meeting or help to prepare it? Do you have suggestions of what to include for this Webinar? Join the discussion now
