A Satellite Foodapalooza Event in Catahoula Parish

Optional free bus leaves downtown Alexandria at 8:30AM (bus leaves CLEDA’s office, located at 900 4th Street)

Keynote Presentation by Darlene Wolnik

Hear from the current Senior Research Associate with the Farmers Market Coalition on how communities can leverage farmers markets to build vibrant and prosperous rural economies.  Darlene Wolnik is a national advocate and trainer for farmers markets and has worked in the field for over fifteen years. Her background contains both extensive community organizing initiatives and innovative small business projects. She managed markets for New Orleans-based Market Umbrella while serving as its Deputy Director. She also designed and ran the organization’s marketshare project, one of the first technical assistance and resource sites for markets in the US.  Darlene has consulted for dozens of market projects ranging from design and strategy, resource development to data collection and analysis.

  • Event features a bus tour of Catahoula Parish where participants will learn how different projects and resources are being utilized to strengthen their local economy.
  • Participants are encouraged to meet in front of CLEDA’s offices (900 4th Street) in downtown Alexandria at 8:30 am to ride a bus together to Sicily Island.
  • Participants can also meet at the LaSalle Community Action Association building in Sicily Island at 10:00 am if they are not able to ride the bus there.
  • Bus will return to Alexandria at around 4:00 pm.

  • Event is in partnership with the Catahoula Parish Healthy Communities Coalition.
  • Event also features a Fresh Central Certified workshop for farmers market managers, vendors, and partners. This workshop will provide insight and strategies for implementing market-based food access and incentive programs, such as accepting SNAP benefits.
