Como Park Falcon Heights Living at Home Block Nurse Program
Our Mission: We are a non-profit serving our neighbors aged 65 years and better, by organizing supportive services, respite for caregivers and the compassion of volunteers.
Summer is here! We know that it is a busy time of year with fun outings and vacations-which make us appreciate your time spent volunteering all the more. Thank you!

It takes a person of great heart to see the wisdom the elders have to offer, and so serve them out of gratitude for the life they have passed on to us.
-Kent Newburn

Your time and friendship means so much to the senior in your life.
Thank you to all our volunteers.
Gay for Good volunteers spent a cool but snow-free Saturday in May helping seniors clean up their yards. They filled almost 50 bags of leaves to the delight of 6 senior homeowners. A HUGE thank you to this fun and hardworking crew.
For current volunteers, an online survey will be sent to you the week of June 18th. Please take a couple of minutes to let us know how volunteering is going for you. We value your feedback and it will be anonymous.
It is time for time sheets!
Please send me your hours for April, May and June by June 29. It is so important for us to know all about the good work you are doing. Our volunteers are "inspiring", "compassionate" and "a blessing". That is how your senior partners are describing their time with you this quarter.

As a volunteer, you have made the decision to help someone and want to make a difference in their life. Maintaining a healthy relationship is the key to providing high quality, compassionate care to meet the needs of your senior partner and meeting your goal of making a difference.

Why we need boundaries

Boundaries help us to provide the safest and most effective care possible. It can be challenging to know how involved to become with your senior partner. One thing to remember is that we are involved with seniors and their families to assist them with issues related to maintaining their ability to live well in the the home they love.

Each volunteer expresses an interest in volunteering for certain activities and is matched with a senior who has a similar need or interest (like grocery shopping, gardening or a ride to a medical appointment.) After an initial meeting, the senior/volunteer team establishes a meeting day and time. Honoring the activity and time constraints helps to maintain a healthy boundary. If your senior partner needs more time or help, please let Jennifer, our Volunteer Coordinator, know.
As you become comfortable with your senior partner, the relationship may start to feel more like a friendship. It is very important to remember you are there to support them as a member of a caring team of support. Your feelings may be very genuine but clear boundaries help make that caring sustainable and can continue on with another volunteer, should you be unable to keep volunteering.

Have you ever crossed the line? Ask yourself:

 Do you share personal problems or aspects of your intimate life with your senior partner?

 Have you ever spent "off-duty time" with your senior partner? Or you've spent time together and didn't report it as volunteer hours?

 Have you ever given gifts to, or received them from your senior partner that were valued over $5?

Have you ever contacted your senior's family to discuss something that has happened with your senior partner?

If you are trying to decide if a particular action or behavior crosses the line into a boundary violation, ask yourself:

 Is this in the senior's best interest?

 Whose needs are being met? Mine or my senior partner?

 How would I feel telling the Block Nurse Program about this?

 Am I treating this senior differently than I would treat another senior partner?

 Am I uncomfortable documenting this decision/behavior?

The Living at Home Block Nurse model is a unique and effective model of care for senior's living in the home and community the love as they age. It is successful because of thoughtful, caring neighbors that come forward to volunteer. If you have any questions about your relationship with your senior partner, please contact Jennifer coordinator@comobnp.org and thank you for all your caring.
