State of the Department

A message from the chair, Dr. Steve Abramson

We have just completed an academic year filled with the accomplishments of so many. What follows is a summary recounting these accomplishments as part of the June 13 "State of the Department" presentation and awards ceremony.

One Faculty. On this day we look back and celebrate the events of this past year. It has been a year of growth across our four teaching hospitals and our efforts to extend common values as "One Faculty." Although substantial changes occurred at each institution, the NYU tradition of commitment to the patient, to education and to research creates the One Faculty bond that transcends the individual teaching hospitals. And, as our faculty grows through expansion, we strive to extend the message of our values through trust and aspiration.

Number 3 USNWR and the Department. This year the School of Medicine achieved the Number 3 ranking in USNWR. The Department of Medicine, by far the largest in the school, played a critical role in this ascent. The rankings reflect reputation, NIH funding and the quality of our student body. Medicine has the most NIH funding of any department in the School of Medicine; that funding has grown 40% year over year, which is the largest growth in the school. We can be proud, therefore, that researchers in Medicine contributed significantly to NYU’s climb in USNWR...

It would be hard to imagine a medical school whose faculty has published more books of outstanding quality and broad general interest, both in fiction and nonfiction, than our own. Our faculty authors have produced an astonishing range of medical classics, from The Lives of a Cell by Lewis Thomas to The House of God by Samuel Shem to The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat by Oliver Sacks. In past years, our faculty authors have won the two most prestigious book awards in the publishing industry: the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Here, we take a look at some recent titles by faculty authors, and also ask:

The Opening of the Kimmel Pavilion

18th Annual Department of Medicine Research Day

On Wednesday, May 23, members of the NYU Langone Health research community gathered in the Alexandria Center's Apella event space to attend the 17th annual Department of Medicine Research Day. The standing room–only event ran the gamut of research realms—from basic science to clinical and population health—showcasing an astonishing total of 200 ongoing projects. Following the event, a celebratory dinner party was held to honor notable junior physician-investigators within the department. The awardees were:

Research Profile: Melanie Jay, MD

As a general internist, Dr. Melanie Jay is passionate about improving the treatment and prevention of obesity and related comorbidities in primary care. Here, she describes the work being done in her MOTIvatE Research Lab and through the NYU Langone Comprehensive Program on Obesity, and how this work will help inform and improve clinical practice so that we can better treat patients with obesity.
