Melanie King // June News

In May 2018, I was lucky enough to attend the Land & Sea Photography Weekend in Lands End organised by Mayes Creative. Whilst in Cornwall, I found out how to shoot and process 16mm film, and captured scenes of the night sky for my Ancient Light series.

100ft of Deep Time

In June 2018, I was commissioned by Mayes Creative to make a 16mm film of the Moon, using my own telescope. The film will be shown by Mayes Creative both in traditional screening environments, and as part of a sculptural film pod, touring festivals in the South West of England this Summer.

Into The Night at Photofusion

On 22 June 2018, Photofusion & the Museum of London will be hosting "Into The Night", a panel discussion exploring issues around female artists working at night. On the evening, Photofusion will debut a newly commissioned film by Whalebone, which features interviews with myself and other artists, describing challenges that we have come up against whilst working outside in the darkness.

Resonances Festival

From 25-29 June, I will be attending an EU Commission funded workshop and residency in Ispra, Italy. During this workshop, artists and scientists will collaborate to create new installations which deal with "big data". I am attending the residency to further develop my ideas about how to represent invisible cosmic data, following the success of my projects Cosmic Ray Oscillograph and Pulsar Oscillograph. I am particularly interested in how Big Data can be made tangible to the human senses, combining both 19th century and 21st century photographic technologies.

In Search of Darkness
Residency at Grizedale Forest

Lumen Studios will be holding a 3 day residency in Grizedale, the Lake District from 6-8 July 2018. Following the residency, there will be an exhibition at Grizedale Project Space, The Lake District from 15 September - 4 October 2018.

Lumen will spend 3 days in Grizedale, responding to the naturally dark skies of the forest. During this residency, Lumen are particularly keen to highlight the importance of preserving dark sky areas, raising awareness of the ecological problems caused by light pollution.
