The RYA used this picture of Papercourt in their publicity for this new award

Papercourt Takes the Honours

We are delighted to have been recognised by the RYA as one of only fifteen sailing clubs of the 1,800 sailing clubs in the UK to have been awarded the country’s first British Youth Sailing (BYS) Recognised Club status as part of a new scheme celebrating excellence in developing sailing stars of the future replacing the current RYA Champions Clubs programme

The BYS Recognised Club status distinguishes those sailing clubs with a commitment to the development youth sailing and race training, which is delivered in a safe and fun environment.

In the words of the RYA “The key challenge for our sport is to encourage more young people to start participating in sailing and this is best done at club level where a successful junior and youth training and racing programme will enable a club to flourish.”

I would like to thank the club and all the volunteers over the years for their support without which we would not have been able to achieve this award.

Not bad for a so-called small inland club!

Comms from the Commodore

1. Weed

Our contractors have been harrowing the lake throughout the spring to reduce weed growth. This has been very successful to date but with recent bright sunshine and warm weather the weed is coming up. Our contractors are now cutting the weed and making great inroads already. This year we have a different weed which we believe to be Sago pondweed which has a shorter growth cycle and does not grow very tall so should not affect the top part of the lake.

There may be some floating clumps from the cutting and sailing, but given the recent SW winds, it should be mostly at the far end.

The good news is that members will not be asked to help clear the cuttings into the weedpit.

2. Sailing Secretary

Due to personal reasons, Jonathan Otter has asked to leave his duties as Sailing Secretary.
I am pleased to say that Frank Brown has kindly agreed to step in to cover for Jonathan.
I hope you will join me in supporting Frank in any way we can.

I would like to thank Jonathan for his time and efforts over the 8 months and wish him well in his other endeavors.

3. Break-Ins

It is regrettable to report that thieves have again attempted to steal from our storage facilities at the club twice in the last couple of weeks. We have further enhanced our physical and technological deterrents and are currently storing some engines away from the boathouse.

Please ensure the alarm is correctly set inside the Boathouse, and be vigilant for any people you see looking suspicious.

Thank you

Fraser Hayden, Commodore

The Work Group - Next Date 4th July

Firstly we all owe a big thank you to Roger Roodhouse, Dave Welch, Norrie MacGregor, Barry Bennett and Frank Brown. They all turned out on Tuesday 6th June to undertake:

Cutting the grass; Strimming the grass; Weeding; Making Shelves; Making a ramp; Repairing the Boathouse

It was a pleasant day the company was good and all are keen to help again when they are available.

We had two new volunteers put their name down following the last newsletter but we still NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS.  The more names there are on  the rota the more flexibility we have on day and time of Work Group activity.

We have the showers to clean Ladies & Gents plus Young Members briefing boat to refurbish. (The big green one aground on the lawn).

Next Work Group is going to be on Wed 4th July.

Volunteer now by email to John_brenda@pantings.plus.com

WOW - The Official Launch of our  Sailability WheelyBoat

On Friday we offricially launched the WheelyBoat, now named Papercourt WoW, aka Wheels on Water.   The Mayor of Guildford, Mike Parsons cut the ribbon and unveiled the name which was picked by the Sailability Committee from dozens of suggestions.  Along with the Mayor, representatives from many of the organisations and donors that made the purchase possible came along to see what their donations had been used for, and to see the positive contribution it provides to our many many clients.  We even took the Mayor for a trip round the lake.  Joff McGill Manager of Sailability and Sarah Sibley our regional Disability Development Officer fom the RYA were also onsite to see what we get up to at Papercourt and to chat to our clients and volunteers.  Everyone left full of cake and singing our praises about what a special club we have at Papercourt that we should all be immensely proud of.

The Mayor in his speech emphasised the huge benefits that Sailability is able to give to our clients and reiterated that Sailability could not happen without the time and dedication our volunteers give.

A huge personal thanks to them, the true unsung heroes here - John Beynon Sailability Chair

If you would like to help out with Sailablity we meet on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Friday of every month in the summer 1.00 pm onwards - and there is always cake!

Royal Navy Big Guns Return to Papercourt SC

On Saturday 16th June, Papercourt SC were hosts to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Yacht Club, who returned for a dinghy sailing day.  The RNVRYC comprises current and former serving members of the Royal Navy or Royal Naval Reserves, all experienced sailors in big boats (yachts) and very big boats (destroyers, frigates, aircraft carriers etc).  The dinghy sailing day gives an opportunity to return to the roots of the club when it was formed 71 years ago, and to sharpen up their dinghy sailing skills.

After a briefing from the event organiser, Jonathan Otter, (a member of both sailing clubs) the 13 sailors took to the water in the Papercourt hire fleet of two Visions and three wanderers.  Even with three-up, the boats were still overpowered, so after some manditoritory reefing they returned to the water for some more relaxed sailing.

They then ran a small regatta of 5 races, in which four boats competed for the coverted "Aldi Trophy”.

Over an enjoyable BBQ dinner, the RNVRYC Commodore, Peter Costalas, thanked all those who took part and Fraser invited the yacht club to return again next year.

Thanks for all those at Papercourt who contributed to the success of the day and evening... Nigel (safety-boat), Sue (bar), Josh & Millie (bosuns), Sarah (ODD), Rob and Jenny (PSC Saturday race team), Fraser, Frank and Tom for hospitality and repairs (!), and all the Papercourt Saturday club sailors who were happy to sail in a smaller course at the far end of the lake leaving lots of space for our guests at the clubhouse end.
