UPDATE
Haiti Plans 2018-2019
Welcome to the second issue of the Northeast District Missions Newsletter. (The initial issue was distributed as hard copy at the merging Northeast District Conference on June 8, 2018.) This newsletter provides an update to the two Haiti trip that were being considered.
Fall 2018
The tentative plan for this fall was to help build a school associated with one of our churches on the mainland while based at the Ortlip Center (near Montrouis). The time frame for organizing a trip this fall is rapidly shrinking. With the deadline for airline ticket purchase barely 6-8 weeks away, with $8000 in project funds along with individual budgets of $1500 to be raised, with several team meetings yet to be scheduled and with minimal response to date, an effort to bring such a trip to fruition seems of questionable value.
However, if there were a group of folks who felt called to a trip such as this and who would rise to the associated challenges, this trip could become a reality. For this to happen I would need to know of your commitment by June 30.
Spring 2019
A project for the dry season is the roof replacement on the duplex apartment at the mission station on La Gonave. This involves removing the current roof to the rafters, repairing/replacing any damaged rafters, putting down new plywood, Styrofoam insulation, and new tin. Project costs is estimated at $10,000; individual budget would likely be $1300 -- $1500. The likely time frame for this 10-14 day trip is the February 12 - March 2 window. All fund raising and preparation would need to be completed by November 15, 2018, in order to avoid conflicts with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years holidays.
Substantial interest in this trip is building. Since there are always maintenance, repair, and upgrading needs, a larger team could address some of those items in addition to the roof replacement.
