USA Today's Berkowitz keeps his eyes on things as former Western Michigan FB student-athlete Duncan & his attorney are holding up the $208M worth of payouts headed to FB, MBB & WBB student-athletes for full cost of attendance balances. U.S. District Court Judge Wilken says Duncan's objection is "meritless and thus his appeal is unlikely to succeed," calls for a $5K bond or withdraw the objection. Interestingly, Duncan & his attorney attempted to do the same thing for payouts in the $60M video games settlement a couple of years back & court records show the pair tried to get $200K to drop their objection in that case. Notable plaintiff attorney Berman: "We think (Tucker’s) actions are frivolous. … We’re doing everything we can under the law to get this resolved in our favor." (link)
Hawaii AD Matlin credited with making "tremendous progress" in getting his department out of the red. FY18 will end with a deficit of $2.3M to $2.6M, but that's down from $4.2M in FY15. However, Matlin points to full cost of attendance, ticket sales & the impact of tax code changes for high earners as items that could impede the push to a balanced budget. Matlin also notes only ~3% ($1.7M) of the UH budget comes from student fees, "Most schools (in the conference) are over 10 percent." UH System VP for Budget & Finance/CFO Young: "The toughest part is always that last $2.5 million to $3 million. The low-hanging fruit is basically gone." (link)
"I am saddened by the news of the recent dismissal of coach Matt Williams, he was a world class coach and an even better person. In May 2017 I used a poorly thought-out strategy with the UNCW Men’s Baseball pitching staff and I apologize to those who I may have offended." That's from mental performance coach Cain, who's at the center of the bizarre UNC Wilmington Baseball story. New comment from the university, "Despite ongoing misinformation and inaccurate media reports, we are legally unable to comment on a personnel action." (link)
The Dallas Morning News' Sherrington witnessed some of the testimony in Ploetz v. NCAA last week, says CTE founding doctor Omalu was rumored to be a witness this week had the trial continued. Sherrington: "Unfortunately, the show’s already over, the NCAA is out some pocket change and we don’t know much more than we did already. Now it’s up to one of the hundred or so other lawsuits in the pipeline. Maybe even Julius Whittier’s. In case you missed it, Texas’ first black scholarship player has early-onset Alzheimer’s. One of his closest friends on those Texas teams, by the way, had been Greg Ploetz. The scary thing is, the odds might not be so crazy." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Major League Baseball attendance is down a sharp 6.6% year over year & 8.6% overall, which if the trends continue through the end of the season it would be the biggest turnstile loss since 1995, the year after a player strike. Commish Manfred points to troublesome weather in the early weeks, expects the second half of the season to pick up the slack. (link); Have you noticed empty seats at the World Cup in Russia? FIFA spokesman Rumsby says the World Cup's problem is not too dissimilar from other high-profile sporting events where sponsors & scalpers control a portion of the tickets & may not end up using/selling the units. (link)

Hampton AD Marshall gets the profile treatment from the Daily Press, goes into the big stories the past few months for the Pirates. First came the November announcement that HU would leave the MEAC for the Big South, then the hire of new FB HC Prunty and last month Hampton signed a five-year deal with Under Armour. Prez Harvey: "It’s been a big, wonderful year for us, and it’s a harbinger of things to come. A major part of the reason for that is our athletic director. He’s been absolutely central to it." Daily Press reporter Johnson calls Marshall the "stability" that Hampton "badly needed when he was hired in July of 2014." HU Sr. VP Harris, to whom Marshall reports: "This past year in particular, he has shown he has three truly outstanding qualities. He has exceptional organizational ability, strong leadership skills and excellent communication skills. At any one time, he’s got a thousand balls in the air. But he has a keen sense of understanding which ones are glass and which ones are rubber. And he never drops the glass balls." Marshall: "When I got here, part of the initiative was how can we improve the athletic profile. How can we improve the department and move things forward? So I did some research, and we looked at certain models, which is nothing I’ve done different at other places. How can we get our athletic program closer to our academic program? How can we get people to look at the athletic program not as just fun and games but as a multimillion-dollar enterprise? Because that’s what it is." (link)
Florida A&M AD Eason on his first six months with the Rattlers: "It's been exciting. It's an opportunity for me to try an make a difference. ... I feel like the university is in great shape with coach Simmons and the staff that he's assembled. I've been focused on academics in terms of working with our students, making sure they have the proper counseling. I wanted to take a look at our facilities and try to upgrade them. .... A lot of times, you focus strictly on football. I wanted make sure I was an athletics director that not only focused on football, but all of our venues and making sure their top-notched." Biggest hurdle has been "change" but knows the department needs stability. Goal for his one-year anniversary is "achievement in all sports" but of course knows FB success drives the ship. (link)
In separate interviews in Omaha yesterday, Arkansas AD Yurachek and Baseball HC Van Horn detailed plans for a 35K-40K square foot facility that would include a new team club house, weight room, and coaches offices, along with a locker area for the pro players who train in Fayetteville during the offseason. Pricetag is $15M-$20M with a ready date in 2020. (link); The Omaha World-Herald profiles Van Horn, who was HC at Nebraska before assuming the reins with the Hogs in 2002 after retiring Razorback HC DeBriyn, who was a longtime mentor to Van Horn, called him about the opening in Fayetteville. Lots here, including DeBriyn's 1985 advice to Van Horn, who had been a standout for the Arkansas team, to come back to school to finish his degree, thus igniting Van Horn's college coaching career as he returned to the Hogs as a graduate assistant and the team went to the CWS. (link)
Texas Baseball HC Pierce reflects on missing out on the Alabama HC job two years ago as the Crimson Tide didn't want to tackle his buyout at Tulane, only to find himself in Austin when the carousel stopped. Pierce's Longhorns take the field in Omaha today against Arkansas. Current UT AD Del Conte: "Jeez Louise, his work ethic is second to none. We got the right guy." Pierce joked at a CWS media session a few days ago that the Texas search led to raises for a number of high-profile HCs, some of whom, like Texas Tech's Tadlock, are on the same side of the Omaha bracket. Pierce: "They all made money because of it, but so did I." (link)
More Personnel: Eastern Washington AD Hickey goes with Drake AHC Flores-Cloud to lead the Volleyball program in Cheney (link); Boston U brings alum Robertshaw back as HC of the Women's Lacrosse team. She has spent the past two years as an AHC at Duke. (link); USA Today's Berkowitz reveals the bonuses earned thus far by some of the HCs in the CWS: Oregon State's Casey $151,666; North Carolina's Fox $87,968; Washington's Meggs $49,039; Texas' Pierce $105K; and Texas Tech's Tadlock $158,333. (link)
Of note for whomever becomes the new AD at Kansas is the university's need to right size its budget & interim Provost Lejuez says the university is "reevaluating all of its contracts and past spending decisions." The university's Cessna CJ4 jet, which costs $1M annually to maintain, is one item that could get slashed. The $1.4M buyout of former AD Zenger is mentioned as an example of a "golden parachute" agreement that is weighing down the ledger. More Lejuez, "It’s moving away from saying, 'Let’s spend now and hope for the best.'" More. (link)
The new south end zone digs at Missouri, which will be ready for the 2019 FB season, are expected to spin off $6M annually, a 4x increase from the previous setup. Opportunities for fans include 1,324 general seats, 16 suites, 1,254 club spots & a 750-person field-club lounge. The Tigers haven't started selling tickets for the new space & will turn to Legends when they're ready to do so. Suites will be priced around $40K per season. CFO Hickman on the field-level club, "It’s going to be very unique. I can high-five the team going onto the field. I can high-five somebody after a touchdown because I’m right there out of the end zone." (link)
Boise State MBB is the only Mountain West program to finish in the top-three of the league standings each of the past four years, despite having one of the lowest budgets in the conference. The Broncos ($2.82M) are $1M under the average league budget ($3.835M) and spend less than half of what San Diego State ($5.924M) and UNLV ($5.889M) do. HC Rice: "Every program has its own challenges, and that’s one of our biggest challenges right now. We’re spending money very wisely and diligently, but you don’t want to have to make decisions based on that." Rice's two biggest needs are player welfare (training, table meals, nutrition, etc) and recruiting. BSU AD Apsey on the recruiting budget: "Recruiting needs to be enhanced I think, because that’s the lifeblood of the program, and that is worrisome if I hear a coach say that they are going to lose a guy because they can’t bring him in here. A recruiting budget of $70,000 from a men’s basketball standpoint is not where it needs to be. I think it needs to be at least twice that. I think that would make it a little easier on our coaches, that’s for sure." Final thoughts from Rice: "Coaches can win games, but administration wins championships." Lots more financial date in here. (link)
Interesting read from Bleacher Report on why esports will continue to gain steam at the high school-level.  esports entrepreneur Parnell: "Traditional sports aren't scalable, but esports are. We don't have to cut any kid that wants to play. And this will be the first truly coed sport in high school. We're really excited about how broad the opportunities are. No one needs to be left out." More, "This is about team building and camaraderie and life skills. It's about people who have been left out finding their place. This is the beginning of something big." (link)
Our thoughts and prayers with the Oregon family as former Ducks linebacker Leiato passed away in a single-car accident near Autzen Stadium Friday morning. FB HC Cristobal and AD Mullens with a joint statement: "We are saddened to learn of the passing of Fotu, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. He will be remembered and missed by all who knew him." (link)
