June 18th, 2018
Dear Woodside,

Its so hard to believe that we are in the final week of school for 2017-2018.  What a fantastic year.  We hope to make this a great last week of school.  With so many fun events, activities, and even a few field trips mixed in, please make sure your kids get plenty of sleep, wear sunscreen as appropriate, and stay hydrated for the last week.

Looking froward to seeing Pre-K and K-2 families tonight for the Matt Loosigian celebration concert at 6 pm followed by a playground reception.  Looking equally forward to seeing our 5th graders at their final celebration assembly on the last day of school.  Reminder, dismissal Friday is 11:55, but 5th graders are free to leave with their families after the assembly.

As we close the year, we are always looking to improve and your voice helps. Please take a few minutes to fill out one (or both) of the following surveys!

Walking School Bus Cancellation from 6/14/18

Unfortunately last we needed to cancel our Whole School Walking School Bus from the Topsham Fire Department To Woodside School.  I wanted to offer up a few more details that prompted new field trip guidelines from the Superintendent that morning that left us unable to continue with the walk as planned.

Last week, a tragic loss of student life in a nearby school district during a field trip prompted system leadership  to consider safety and field trip permission practices at all schools.

Our superintendent sent out some guidelines for us as principals to follow regarding any and all current and future field trips until future notice.

For our purposes, a Woodside  “field trip” will be considered any activity that involves students leaving school grounds (this includes a walking school bus or walking trip to Dairy Queen, for example.)

For the immediate term and from now on until further notice, here are the expectations for any and all field trips:

1. Any activity involving students leaving the school grounds will first require signed permission from the principal. (Teachers will use the MSAD 75 School Field Trip Permission Form as the basis for a request, Mr. Dedek will approve or deny those and sign them before Being sent home for parent signature.) For previously planned trips planned through the remainder of the year with permission slips already in place, teachers were instructed to see Mr. Dedek for retroactive approval.

2. Permission slips are required for each trip and all students attending. No blanket year-long permission slip will suffice. (Teacher are required to consult with the principal for any special concerns.)

3. All permission forms signed by parents must be collected by teachers, and all parent approvals noted before the trip.  All signed will be turned into the office.

4. Our expected chaperone to student ratio will be 1:6 until further notice.

Thank you. Updated guidelines from Superintendent Smith were only sent out a little before 7:00 a.m. last Thursday. Among the biggest changes was the requirement for a walking school bus trip to have signed permission forms. This was a change from past practice, and directly impacted our ability to hold the walking school bus and necessitated a cancellation.  I want to thank all the school staff as well as transportation department and fire department staff for working so quickly and collaboratively to change gears.  The professionalism for all the school department and town personnel responsible for student safety is, as always, greatly valued.  We had a great whole school extra recess in its place. We intend to hold a walking school bus again next fall under the new guidelines.

End on a healthy note: The role of play in Development and Success!

See the link below shared by Woodside OT, Barbara Piccirillo for great information about what motor skills are important for student success. Enjoy your week!

  1. The Role of Play - The role of play is fundamental in a student’s development.  It is inherently motivating and thus the best way for a child to learn.  Not only does it help build gross and fine motor movement, it is important in sensory regulation, language building, social skills (such as reciprocity, cooperation and negotiation), problem solving, planning, sequencing, symbolic and imaginary skills as well!  Prior to elementary school (2-4 years old), you may see children engaging in “parallel play”, in which they may sit next to each other without much interaction. They may imitate one another but are mostly focused on their own toys. By the early elementary school years (4-7 years old), children start to shift toward “associative play” with increasing amounts of sharing and social interaction.

For example, kids may sit around a bucket of legos and share the toys, but they are not working together quite yet on the same project. Fine motor skills improve especially during this time, and children start to incorporate storytelling, risk-taking and role-playing into their play. Some good toys to use to encourage “associative play” include building blocks or constructive play toys, play dough, figurines (dinosaurs, bugs, dolls, etc.), and race cars with tracks.  Students can practice sharing and turn taking, often with the guidance of an adult. As students enter the later elementary school years (7-12 years old), they shift from “associative play” to “cooperative play” with a focus on rules and roles. They enjoy games with official rules such as Checkers or Bingo as well as unofficial rules that can be created in the moment such as variations of tag or basketball games.

Furthermore, these students like to work together on a team or project, becoming interested in their peers as well as the task on hand.  They may build their skills informally on school projects or formally as they join sports teams, boy/girl scouts, and other clubs. Playing with friends is important, but it doesn’t always go as expected and problems can arise. Through play, adults can actively help students to build and practice social skills to progress from “parallel play” to “associative play” to “cooperative play”. This helps students have fun, stay active and stay connected with peers as well as enjoy the world around them!
