WOMEN OF INFLUENCE ... IN THE LADIES

Former chief nursing officer,  the Right Reverend Dame Sarah Mullally was installed as Bishop of London on Saturday 12 May. In her sermon, she preached on the theme of "being subversive for Christ" - noting that 150 years ago that week, suffragettes placed a bomb underneath the same seat upon which she had been enthroned as Bishop of London.

Days later, I attended the Sons of the Clergy annual service at St Paul's Cathedral followed by Dinner at Merchant Taylors' Hall and was keen to meet Bishop Sarah as she'd "liked" one of my Tweets about her being subversive.

As you might imagine, everyone was trying to meet her and I didn't manage to say "hello" before we were called into the Hall for Dinner.

However, at the end of the evening, I was in the "ladies" and so was she.  My moment!   I introduced myself, shook her hand, congratulated her, wished her luck.

I've told several men this story.  They stare blankly.

I tell women, a little light bulb goes on. Yes! Now we women can be in the room with someone influential.  Not the Bishop's wife - but the Bishop herself.  This is what men have been able to do for centuries.

Change is not only in the air, it's happening.

EVERY CLOUD ... HAS A SILVER LINING

On 30 May I started to get emails saying "Is this from you, Gwen, it looks like spam / I can't open it / is it important ..." Sadly, I'd received the same email myself the week before and despite precautions, this had infected my system.  I put a message on Twitter and LinkedIn and set up an Autoresponder which simply exacerbated the problem as I ended up sending even more emails.  The result is that the citywomen URL has been blocked by certain servers.  I can receive but can't send with certainty that they'll arrive at their destination so I've had to set up another email account.  Nightmare!

But, on the upside, people I've not spoken to for a while emailed me, telephoned me.  "Let's meet, I'd love to do some work with you ... "  And even complete strangers called which has resulted in some very interesting conversations.

Remember to keep in touch with people.  It's good to talk!
