2018 Chinese Visual Festival
June Update

Although the 2018 Chinese Visual Festival has come to a close, there's still plenty to look forward to, including the Apeture: Asia & Pacific Film Festival later this month, UK-China Dialogue on Future Academic and Industrial Collaboration in the Creative Industries + Book Launch event, and more. In the meantime, revisit some great memories from CVF 2018 here!

Cultural Industries in Shanghai - June 29th

A great event on June 29th in London, which should be of interested to  CVF audiences:

A new book, Cultural Industries in Shanghai: Policy and Planning inside a Global City (2018) will be published by Intellect this June. Edited by Professor Rong Yueming (Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences) and Professor Justin O’Connor (Monash University), under the Intellect China Library Series, this is the first publication of its kind in the English language. It takes an insightful look into policy and planning of a city’s cultural development with specific case studies and its part in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Intellect Books are taking this opportunity to facilitate conversations around the topic of future UK-China collaboration in the creative industries and have invited experts from the UK as well as editor Rong to join us for a lively discussion.

Aperture: Asia & Pacific Film Festival + Aqerat

Aperture: Asia & Pacific Film Festival is a new UK-wide film festival dedicated to screening some of the boldest, most daring, challenging, and striking films from the Asian and Pacific regions. The festival focuses particularly on underrepresented cinemas, from Azerbaijan to Vanuatu and everything in between, opening windows on a world whose landscapes and peoples remain largely absent from our screens.

The festival launched in Glasgow in the Spring and tours across the UK during Summer/Autumn 2018, taking place in London, Newcastle and various other cities.

Aperture is co-founded and co-directed by Sonali Joshi and Jasper Sharp.

Aqerat (We, the Dead)
CVF is excited to be partnering with Aperture on the screening of Aqerat (We, the Dead), on 30th June in London at the Cinema Museum, the latest challenging and artistic work from Malaysian director Edmund Yeo, and a highly topical look at the migration of persecuted Rohinya to Malaysia.

A young ethnically Chinese woman from Malaysia, Hui Ling, works at a floating restaurant near the Thai-Malaysian border, saving money to fulfil her dreams of a better life in Taiwan. When the hot-tempered boyfriend of her bar hostess roommate Qi Qi makes off with her savings, her boss proposes a way for her to make money more quickly, working alongside a group of human traffickers handling boatloads of refugees from the persecuted Rohingya Muslim minority group arriving from Myanmar. However, it is not long before Hui Ling realises the dark truth behind the trade as, rather than offering the new arrivals a safe haven in a new country, her employers have further ways of extracting money from them.
