The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner gets Bevilacqua Helfant Ventures' namesake lead for a Q&A on the media rights landscape & what the AT&T-Time Warner deal could mean for college athletics. Bevilacqua starts by noting the pace of innovation & therefore the difficulty of accurately predicting where we'll be in the near- & long-term future, though premium content (read: live sports) continues to be highly desirable programming. Advice to Commissioners, "Put out a great product and showcase it in a way that maximizes consumption. Do what you’re doing. The market will define itself. If you have high-value premium content, you’ll be OK." Here's the most interesting comment of the whole piece, "The outstanding question is, 'When are the tech guys going to show up, and are they going to show up?' They all have massive video budgets, and they’ve started to dabble in sports. But in three-and-a-half years, when the Big Ten hits the market, are any of those non-legacy media companies going to be there in a big way? I hope so, but it’s not clear to me yet." More, including the importance of the net neutrality situation. (link)
Latest SBJ: Michael Smith pens on the future of former 'Power 5' ADs like Tennessee/Kansas State's Currie, former Arkansas boss Long, former Auburn AD Jacobs & former Nebraska AD Eichorst. Smith notes how Currie "began his recovery by looking for opportunities to engage with others in the business and stay visible within the college athletics community," which started just days after his departure from Knoxville in being present for the Learfield Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in New York City last December. Currie: "I’m excited to get back to what I love doing, which is building great organizational teams, growing resources and solving problems." Jacobs, who's the newly minted #2 at Florida, "I’ve said before that the No. 2 job is the best job in college athletics. I don’t think I’ll be an AD again, but I didn’t think I’d be in this role again. It would just take a unique place." As for Long, "I’m an athletic director and I certainly believe there’s another AD job in my future." More. (link); Smith went even deeper into Currie's story as the former Vols boss served as Executive in Residence at Robert Morris & led at class at Columbia. Currie: "It helped remind me why I love being on campus. Building relationships and learning how different places and entities work is fun and fulfilling for me. It has reinforced my passion for higher learning and athletics. … Truly listening and learning from such a diverse group of people from across the country will only better equip me to serve others.
(link); John Ourand caught up with Pac-12 Networks boss Shuken, who points to the likes of Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google & Twitter "sampling" enough league content by 2022-23 that they'll be interested in the next full rights negotiation. Shuken: "Our short-term objective is to learn from these companies and exploit their reach. Our long-term goal is to position ourselves for the most number of interested parties when our rights agreements come up." Also of note, "We’re bolstering our distribution team so that we can focus on international distribution as well. We think that’s a big opportunity." More. (link)
Purdue Fort Wayne unveiled its new logo, and as was previously reported, the Mastodon mascot has remained, now adorned with blue trim on a field of black and gold Purdue colors. Chancellor Elsenbaumer yesterday cited three key areas of importance IPFW took into consideration throughout the rebranding process following community input: keeping the Mastodon mascot and nickname; keeping Fort Wayne in the school's name; and preserving some blue. " When we did our focus group, it was very clear from all the logos and different designs, this is the one that clearly came to the top over and over and over again in all of those sessions. We want to make sure we continue the legacy over and over as a demonstration of our value of and our commitment to Fort Wayne and Northeastern Indiana." (link)
Puma: Relaunching its NBA roster in grand style, Puma has announced a serious of splashy signings, none more important perhaps than Jay-Z, who has signed on as a creative consultant (not prez of BB operations, as was originally reported). (link); So far, Puma has added former Arizona student-athlete Ayton, former Duke student-athlete Bagley III and former Texas Tech student-athlete Smith from this year's draft class as it establishes an NBA roster and expands its overall roster in the States. U.S. athletes currently sponsored by Puma include New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman and Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney. Track legend Bolt still graces the cover of Puma's annual financial reports. (link); Bagley's deal is worth a reported $2.1M annually but has more incentives than a typical Nike contract, according to sports attorney Heitner. (link)
Swag: Memphis & Nike lock arms for a five-year extension that will keep the pair together through the 2022-23 competition seasons. Value: $11.25M in product over five years, which starts at $2.05M in 18-19 & increases to $2.25M in 22-23. The Tigers didn't accept any competing bids. AD Bowen: "Our decision to continue our agreement with Nike is first and foremost the fact that our student-athletes and our coaching staff want to be a Nike program. Their innovations, designs and superior customer service have been truly incredible." The deal also includes a 12% royalty rate for FB & MBB product sales. More. (link); Staying in the state, Middle Tennessee State expects to close on its new pact with Nike very soon. Assoc. AD/COO Gosha: "The financial implication of that agreement is going to (be) much superior to the current one. It’s going to be light years ahead of where we are, and we hope to have that done by the end of this month." (link); And here's a look at other apparel deals around Tennessee. (link)
With the NBA Draft just days away, AthleticDirectorU's Boettger takes a look at trend lines for underclass student-athletes who enter the fray. Getting selected is just one part of the story as signing a guaranteed contract is arguably more important, "Half of the underclassmen that declared in 2015 received a guaranteed rookie contract by being selected in the draft’s first round. In 2016, however, the percentage declined all the way to just 32.7%, as 52 underclassmen declared with an agent but just 17 were among the draft’s first 30 selections." As you might expect, high-major student-athletes lead the way in terms of percentage of the overall cohort of early declarations, led in large part by the ACC. Lots more data on the topic within. (link)
The Athletic's Emerson has put together a to-do list for Georgia following this past season's department-wide success, noting that "Georgia has been even better in the past and has the resources to get back there." To that end, Emerson advises building a new FB weight room, observing that there's "no time to dilly-dally" and asserting that HC Smart should be rewarded for his work thus far. In addition, Emerson calls for construction of a new indoor tennis facility "as soon as possible;" leveraging the recent success by showing fans a long-term facilities master plan "rather than the current approach, which seems shortsighted;" putting together a similar financial master plan; give T&F HC Kyprianou a "big raise;" and have a "general sense of urgency." He finishes with a final thought: "Football is the straw that stirs the drink at Georgia. It also should be the inspiration. When Georgia nearly won the whole thing, the reaction by the head coach was not to sit on the laurels. It was to complete, not even a month later, the best recruiting class in the country. It should be that way for Georgia athletics." (link)
Colorado is looking to outside events and partnerships with local businesses to find untapped revenue streams, an initiative being spearheaded by Assoc. AD for Business Development Carl, who has focused on developing relationships with small- and mid-sized local business since coming to CU in 2013. "There's some community initiatives and we've been able to work with the small and medium-sized business community, enhance our offerings and our events and tours that we do here with the business community." Part of those offerings come via the Champions Center, which was opened in 2015 with the community in mind, and so far, it has worked, with revenue from outside events growing from $445K in FY15 to a budgeted net of $983K for FY18. More from Carl. (link); Meanwhile, freshly minted CU Asst. Vice Chancellor/Assoc. AD Broussard is eager to take on the opportunity to accelerate fundraising. Coming from LSU, whose FY16 revenue totaled over $141M with $33.5M coming via contributions (compared to $77M and $11M for CU, respectively), Broussard says opportunity abounds despite some noticeable differences in the sports landscape: "In Baton Rouge or Athens or College Station or even Austin, Texas, on Saturday afternoon if the home team is playing, 99 percent of the people are doing something surrounded with that. Here, you've got so many other great options and it pulls you in different directions." Lots more form Broussard. (link)

The CAA MBB Tournament will move to a more centrally located venue in Washington, D.C. for the 2020-22 seasons following a three-year stretch at the North Charleston Coliseum in South Carolina. The tournament is expected to be held at the Entertainment & Sports Arena, a 4,200-seat venue in its final stages of construction. Commish D'Antonio: "Our athletic directors and board of directors felt (being) in our nation’s capital in a new building in a location that is centrally located was just a real great opportunity." D'Antonio also addressed the reduced seating capacity, noting that attendance is often dictated by which teams are playing. "What makes the championship successful is the environment we're providing." (link)

Still newish Charlotte AD Hill comments on the 49ers' position in the conference realignment game, if and when it arrives again, "Let's get better. Let's worry about ourselves and take care of our own business. The future is very bright for this department long-term. [...] Would you have lost a bet 20 years ago if you'd have said Louisville was going to be in the ACC? I would have lost that bet. The point is, no one can predict how things are going to go in the future. Let's build a championship program." (link); Hill took a big step in building his executive team with the hire of Syracuse Deputy AD for External Operations Fuller as the new Deputy AD for External Affairs. Hill on Fuller, "He is nationally respected as one of the brightest minds in college athletics, and his commitment to Charlotte is an enormous achievement for our program. As we align our efforts in branding, marketing, communications, and resource development, Chris's strong leadership and experience will be invaluable. It's truly a Gold Standard hire." (link)
Washington State FB HC Leach under a bit of fire for his Twitter commentary on a hoax video featuring former President Obama. Leach: "Listen to this. Text your thoughts. There is a lot of disagreement on government, so I think that an open discussion is always in order. Tweet your thoughts, maybe we can all learn something." Leach's tweet was later deleted, though he followed-up with the full speech & said additional discussion is important. (link); USA Today's Wolken writes on why this type of controversy around Leach makes it hard for another 'Power 5' institution to hire him. WSU's official response, "As a private citizen, Mike Leach is entitled to his personal opinions. Coach Leach’s political views do not necessarily reflect the views of Washington State University students, faculty and staff."(link)
1.Question's @TaiMBrown caught up with Rice Senior Assoc. AD/COO Gardner to discuss how a background in the corporate consulting world has translated to college athletics. Gardner joined the Owls back in 2014 after a stint with Boston Consulting Group & was an All-American Wrestling student-athlete during his undergrad days at Harvard. Of note, "It made a lot of business sense to bring strong corporate business practices to college athletics. […] College athletics changed my life so to have the opportunity to bring my skills to this industry for the purposes of changing Student-Athletes lives is really a great situation." (link)
The Tulsa World's Emig is the latest notable journalist to write on comments by Oklahoma State AD Holder on the recruiting tactics of Pokes FB HC Gundy. Title: "Latest Gundy-Holder quarrel feels like most damaging one yet." Thesis: "You can point out Gundy and Holder have made it 13 years without scratching each others’ eyes out, and even thrived amid the acrimony. I maintain it isn’t healthy for a football coach and athletic director to be sniping, particularly during an era when one job has never been more predicated on the other. No relationship of that sort ends well. But then this is our state’s version of a dog chasing its tail. As expected as it is futile. Nothing new to see here, really... Until you consider the source of the disagreement." (link)
Stephen F. Austin FB HC Conque has been suspended by the university for a violation of policies. Here's really all we know right now, "Stephen F. Austin State University has suspended head football coach Clint Conque pending an investigation into alleged violations of university policy. The investigation is expected to take several weeks. No comments will be made by the university until the investigation is complete." New Lumberjacks AD Ivey starts July 1 & now has his first challenge. (link)
More Personnel: Longtime Florida State Baseball HC Martin will retire at the end of next season. Noles AD Wilcox says he will not search for Martin's replacement until the 2018-19 season has ended. (link); Providence AD Driscoll selects USA Hockey Head Scout Kelly as the next Women's Hockey HC for the Friars. (link); Recently retired Oklahoma Prez Boren reflects for The Oklahoman on the hiring process for former FB HC Stoops. Boren quips that he and AD Castiglione each sweated out Stoops' decision in different ways waiting for him to decide between the Sooners and Iowa. (link); Montana State Track & Field HC Kennedy calls it a career after 37 years. (link); Lamar Prez Evans released a statement yesterday about the recent firing of Softball HC Bruder and AHC Honkofsky that said, in part, "The coaches, through their attorney, have claimed they have no knowledge of what contributed to their dismissal. This is contrary to the testimony uncovered in the university's investigation. The terminations of the softball coaches were appropriate and legal, and we are fully prepared to defend these actions in trial court and, if necessary, the appellate courts." (link); The Knoxville News Sentinel's Adams asks what happened to the extension for Tennessee WBB HC Warlick? (link); McNeese State AD Hemphill promotes Asst. AD for Administration and Operations Stines to Assoc. AD as part of other staff moves. (link)
Missouri-St. Louis (DII) AD Flanagan reflects on what she told new Ball State AD Goetz back in 2008 when Goetz had the opportunity to move on to Butler as Assoc. AD/SWA, "I said, 'There’s never a good time to move. If you don’t move now, you may never get this opportunity again. You need to take it.'" That advice was after Goetz had won 120 matches as HC of the Tritons over 11 seasons. Now Goetz begins her tenure in Muncie & notes her time as Interim AD at Minnesota as super important, "Sitting one chair over, it’s a completely different perspective. To have the opportunity to do that for such a long period of time has provided me a lot of perspective on what to expect, what it’s going to feel like and how you need to engage with so many different constituencies. It really has helped prepare me for this opportunity, without a doubt." A bit more. (link)
Iowa AD Barta chats with Hawk Central on his MBB scheduling practices in light of the recent announcement that the Hy-Vee Classic will end after the upcoming season. First and foremost for Barta: "What pieces are needed to give us the best chance to get into the NCAA Tournament? That’s what we’re going to evaluate every year." The 20 Big Ten games, plus the annual meeting with Iowa State, the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the Gavitt Games against the Big East, and a preseason tourney leave the Hawkeyes schedule open for only four other games. Barta: "It does no good if we think we are hurting our chance to get to the NCAA Tournament. But just about every program in America have those [the "tomato cans" opponents] sprinkled in, very intentionally. That’s what we’ll evaluate every time we put a schedule together." (link)
More state of the game talk from Omaha & it sounds like instant replay for Regional round post-season play will be looked at closely. NCAA Director of Baseball Championships Holman, "I’d anticipate some movement on that." DI Committee Chair & South Carolina AD Tanner points to the SEC starting a centralized command center to get calls right. The SEC is also pushing a measure to add a third full-time assistant coach, which could be voted on by membership next April. TCU HC Schlossnagle: "We have the worst player to coach ratio in college athletics, and we do a very poor job of providing entry level jobs for young coaches that pay full-time salaries with full benefits. Adding another coach will also improve the quality of life for other coaches, spreading the recruiting responsibilities among four coaches instead of three." (link)
Georgia Tech will begin using the eye-tracking technology SyncThink as part of its concussion management program. Assoc. Dir. of Sports Medicine Gilson: "We are extremely excited about the opportunity to work with (SyncThink CCO) Scott Anderson and his team with Eye-Sync, but even more excited about the opportunity to improve our student-athlete outcomes as it relates to understanding the complexities of (mild traumatic brain injury) care. Having a more objective means to assessment may offer a clearer path to recovery and healing for our student-athletes and sports medicine staff." (link)
The Texas A&M Men's Swimming and Diving student-athlete who was found responsible of sexual assault has reportedly filed a Title IX lawsuit against the school. The federal lawsuit filed by Austin Van Overdam alleges "disparate treatment based on sex" and requests a jury trial. It was filed one week after a tweet from his accuser gained national attention and led to several other women claiming TAMU has mishandled such incidents. Van Overdam is seeking unspecified monetary damages related to future career earnings, loss of scholarship funds, and "humiliation and embarrassment." (link); Texas A&M Prez Young penned a letter to the Aggie community emphasizing that safety and security is the university's number one priority following a heightened awareness of sexual assault complaints on campus. Young stressed that the Office of the Dean of Student Life is offering confidential support to affected individuals and the university is reviewing policies regarding sexual misconduct to assess safety, support, sensitivity, timeliness, and fairness. Young: "This level of scrutiny is what we owe our students and their families, our faculty, staff and the Aggie family around the world. I encourage everyone to reach out to inform this process to help Texas A&M become everything it can and should be." (link)
Also Noticed: Virginia Tech was the last 'Power 5' school to have an internally-run website, but no longer, as SIDEARM officially launched the new hokiesports.com yesterday. (link); FAU unveils a new concessions pricing model at FAU Stadium dubbed "Paradise Pricing" with chips as cheap as $1 and imported beers at $5. (link); Here is Computerworld's annual list of the 100 best places to work in IT in the United States... the NCAA ranks seventh in training. (link); ; St. Bonaventure MLAX has been accepted into the MAAC as an associate member for the 2018-19 season, marking their first year in DI MLAX. Commish Ensor: "St. Bonaventure is well recognized for its academic and athletic excellence, and as the institution launches its men's lacrosse program the MAAC is excited to have them join the conference as an associate member. Coach Mearns is very familiar with the MAAC from his tenure at Canisius where he won two MAAC titles. I expect he will quickly have the Bonnies become a competitive program in the MAAC." (link); New Mexico has suspended FB student-athlete Boyce indefinitely for physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend and one of his teammates. AD Nunez: "I want to emphasize that we have standards and expectations of conduct for all UNM student-athletes that include civility and mutual respect. We cannot, and will not, accept anything less." (link)
