Caregiver Alberta Updates....

Supporting Caregivers in the Edmonton Area Newcomer Communities
Through funding provided by an Edmonton Community Foundation grant, we planned to reach out to newcomer groups and introduce our COMPASS program to caregivers in their communities. Focus groups were held to help identify barriers and possible modifications to the COMPASS program.  Lunch and learns were done with partner agencies (Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN) and Multicultural Health Brokers) to increase their awareness of caregiver needs and to gather information about tailoring information for their communities.  Some of our successes were:
  • Increased number of newcomers accessing caregiver resources
  • Relationships and collaborations built within agencies serving newcomers
  • Identification of modifications needed to make existing programs meet the needs of newcomer caregivers
  • COMPASS program held at EMCN and requested to continue.
When the final report on this project is completed, it will be on our website.
Order of the Eastern Star
Sandy Sereda attended the Gala in Calgary on June 1st. which gave her a chance to meet our long term and very valued funders.  We are extremely thankful for their on-going support.
Inter-Provincial Collaborations
Caregivers Alberta has been working closely with caregiver organizations in Nova Scotia and BC and the currently developing one in Ontario. Through shared knowledge and practice, these relationships help to develop programs, identify issues and provide a nationwide voice for caregivers.
Phone Support Project
In collaboration with the Edmonton PEGASIS project and the Southside PCN Senior Centre Without Walls, we will be piloting a Information and Support Phone Chat on the second Tuesday of July and August from 7-8pm.
July - "What you should know about sleep"

Sun Saavy
Safe sun exposure is important to ensure optimal health.  Here are a few strategies to keep you sun saavy....
Limit time in the sun - The UV Index can be 3 or higher from 11am-3pm. The sun is strongest when your shadow is shorter than you are tall.
Use sun safety even on cloudy days, and remember that UV rays can be reflected off water, sand, snow and concrete.
Cover up to protect skin - long sleeves, pants, wide brimmed hat
Sunscreen - use a broad spectrum, water resistant, at least an SPF 30.
Sunglasses - make sure they provide protection for UVA and UVB.
Remember to protect children and pets.
Here is a website for more information about sun safety
