International Food recall  for frozen vegetables
Belgium based frozen food distributor Greenyard NV have conducted a international recall of frozen vegetables in July, that is still current in Australia in August, due to potential listeria contamination. Several major retail brands of frozen food in Australia have been affected, including Metcash Black and Gold brand, Woolworths and Aldi's Market Fare. The cost of this international recall is estimated to be in excess of  30 Million.

Food Borne illness strategy
Australia’s Foodborne Illness Reduction Strategy 2018-2021 was published in July by the  Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation
One of these priorities is to reduce foodborne illness, particularly related to Campylobacter and Salmonella. This means relevant parts of the food supply chain; that is, the poultry, egg, food service (egg handling and raw egg products) and horticulture (minimally processed fruit and vegetables, leafy green vegetables, sprouts, melons and berries) industries; will be targeted industry sectors to develop strategies to reduce the prevalence of contamination with Campylobacter and Salmonella.
Campylobacter
is the most commonly notified cause of gastroenteritis in Australia. Foodborne illness caused by Salmonella has significantly increased over the past 20 years in Australia, with an estimated 2,100 hospitalisations and 15 deaths.
The national strategy to reduce these statistics  of food borne illness will require development of information for food business knowledge, best practice and importantly, develop awareness and commitment to improving the culture of food safety in businesses.

Lupin now a declarable allergen
Lupin is a legume related to peanut and soybean, that has been added to the list of allergens that must be declared on food sold in Australia. This became enforceable from 26 May 2018.
All CFS clients are reminded to check their products for lupin as an ingredient or potential for cross contamination and update their warning statement on product labels.

QLD Container Deposit scheme
Queensland will introduce a similar container deposit scheme to NSW, SA and ACT consumers on 1 November 2018. Consumers  will be able to return eligible beverage containers to designated drop-off points and receive a 10 cent refund for each container. For more information see Queensland Government website https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/pollution/management/waste/container-refund-about.  Western Australia is expected to introduce a similar scheme in 2020.
