KUSports.com's Keegan argues Kansas needs to hire a new AD from outside college athletics or a leader who doesn't have a track record of extending the contracts of big time HCs who don't end up working out. Chastises KU for giving FB HC Beaty more years & money on the potential of Beaty exiting to become the OC at Texas, also points to former Arkansas AD Long's support of former Razorbacks FB HC Bielema as another example. (link); CBSSports.com's Dodd believes KU must allow a new FB HC - assuming the new AD hires one after the upcoming season - to fail. Spelman Johnson's Robinson on what a new HC might consider, "I think there is a risk. The reward side is limited. You're probably not going to win a national championship there. It goes back to, 'What is success?' A mid-level bowl? Beat Texas Tech once every four years?" An unnamed 'Power 5' AD: "They've never been able to embrace a blueprint. It's going to be a tough putt no matter who gets hired." Another P5 leader thinks the Jayhawks have to find their David Cutcliffe. Dodd ends with a list of potential names that could be next in line in Lawrence, wonders if the new AD turns right back around to Korn Ferry to help with the FB HC search. Again, if there is one. (link)
Another twist at Baylor as plaintiff attorneys falsely infer & claim "that Baylor is footing the bill for [former AD] McCaw’s counsel [and] Baylor is trying to 'pay off McCaw and thereby influence his testimony by hiring him a lawyer.'" Response: "There is absolutely no basis for any such inference…Separate counsel are routinely retained by employers to represent former employees, for a variety of reasons." More from the university, "The inflammatory accusations made by Plaintiffs’ counsel are unsubstantiated by any actual facts or first-person accounts. There is a disturbing pattern of false narratives being peddled in legal filings and in the media that have absolutely no relevance to the 10 women who have filed claims in this case. We look forward to filing our response with the court later this week." (link)
July 19th is when we'll learn what New Mexico decides on the sport sponsorship front to right size its budget. No word yet on what the Lobos will propose to university leaders. (link); Eastern Michigan's response to those pressing their case in the courts to reinstate some of the programs getting cut: There aren't enough student-athletes left to field teams & the costs to restart operations are too high. On the other side of the table, "The choice to stay and forego their dream is not a real choice or a viable option for these Plaintiffs, nor is it a fair choice to ask of these student athletes who have given so much of their time, effort, blood, sweat and tears to their sports and the university that betrayed their trust." Overall, EMU argues it would be a bad precedent for the courts to dictate which sports the university can field. (link)
West Virginia AD Lyons discusses how the Mountaineers are moving forward, points to a number of upgrades to key facilities & the importance of listening to fan feedback. Lyons also notes the hire of a second full-time nutritionist to serve the needs of WVU student-athletes given the layout of its locker rooms & workout spaces. (link); As for FB in Morgantown, 24K season ticket packages have been sold to date, which is a touch behind last year's pace. 2K mini-plan options have been moved. (link)
Down in Tallahassee, Florida State AD Wilcox comments further on a new FB operations building, "We still want to have a hub central location for all the academic activities as well as a training table for that all our student athletes can come to, and be able to eat a meal together. So it's not just your teammates, but you're getting to know the student athletes in other sports." Wilcox also adds perspective to the hire of a new Baseball HC after the 2019 season, "The positive is that Mike has created it to be a very desirable position. The negative is that whoever comes in has big shoes to fill, and very high expectations of that person coming in the door. Sometimes that next person is not always going to end up being successful as you want them to be, and you may have to take a little while to get the right person. So but we're going to try to do our due diligence to make sure that we find the right person." (link)
Questions surround Ohio Republican Congressman & former Ohio State Wrestling AC Jordan on what he knew & did or did not do in connection to claims of abuse by former team doctor Strauss. A former Buckeyes student-athlete, "I considered Jim Jordan a friend. But at the end of the day, he is absolutely lying if he says he doesn’t know what was going on." Another: "He’s a great guy. We would have all these great talks with him and he talked about how one day he’d be the president of the United States. So it’s sad for me to hear that he’s denying knowing about Strauss. I don’t know why he would, unless it’s a cover-up. Either you’re in on it, or you’re a liar." Lots more. So far, it looks like Jordan has not responded to the university about the situation. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Speaking of North Dakota, the Fighting Hawks are set to experience the world of college athletics in multiple conference as the bulk of its programs are headed to the Summit League. A new fiscal year for many schools around the nation coincides with SIDEARM rolling out a number of new websites. Purdue, Minnesota, Denver, Florida Atlantic, Baylor, Coastal Carolina, the SWAC, Dartmouth, Delaware, UT Martin, Brown, Columbia, North Dakota, the Mountain West, Maryland, Saint Peter's & the Ivy League, just to name a few. (link)
New Purdue Executive Senior Assoc. AD & former Abilene Christian AD De Leon on the wire with a Q&A from GoldandBlack.com. On how his tenure at ACU will aid the Boilermakers, "I understand the big picture better than I ever have. […] I think I have a better understanding of what an athletic director wants and needs, and I can support Mike better. I think I have a better understanding of what head coaches want and need and I can support them better. I have a much broader depth of understanding of what it takes to run a successful athletic department and how all the moving parts work together and how a successful fundraising organization can improve the entire organization. It’s just helped me think bigger picture and not be such a one-trick pony." De Leon also notes the importance of 'Power 5' experience in order to one day lead a P5 department, looks forward to learning from Boilermakers AD Bobinski & Deputy AD Butikofer. A bit more. (link)
Former Virginia #2 Oliver aids the NCAA's Champion Forum, which pushes to prepare minority HC candidates to succeed in HC chairs. Last week, a cohort of Clemson co-OC Elliott, Michigan AHC Hamilton, LSU DC Aranda, Florida State DC Barnett, South Carolina OC McClendon & Navy OC Jasper were put through the paces. Oliver: "You can’t shame people into hiring people. You can’t tell (schools) what they need to be doing. But what we can do is make sure (the candidates) are ready." Jasper: "It’s just the knowledge of what goes into becoming a head coach, what (athletic directors) look for, what search firms look for. Having those tools in our toolbox now and know what people look for, now we can address those issues and work on getting better at it." More. (link)
The SportingNews's McCarthy reports the Big Ten Network is going hard after SEC Network big voice Finebaum. While Finebaum & ESPN look to be close to finalizing a new deal, the exit of former Worldwide Leader Skipper looks to have complicated the process as the two already a pact in place. Sources at Fox/BTN indicate they've been angling for the type of content Finebaum could bring to the table. (link)
More Personnel: Former Texas & Arizona State AD Patterson is no longer the CEO of the Arizona Coyotes, but will continue to support the organization as a consultant. (link); New Mexico Baseball HC Birmingham continues to lead his program even though his contract is currently month-to-month. A new deal is being negotiated & Birmingham wants three years. (link); Virginia AD Williams pegs Oregon Women's Golf HC Scott for the same role in Charlottesville. (link); Kentucky AD Barnhart turns to Purdue Track & Field/Cross Country HC Greene to take over the Wildcats' program. (link); UNC Wilmington AD Bass selects Arkansas AC & former Elon HC Neal as his new Women's Soccer HC. (link); Tennessee Cheer HC Postell-Gee has been placed on administrative leave, the second such occurrence of her career, as the university looks into claims of racially & ethnically insensitive remarks. (link); Presbyterian Women's LAX HC Dachille exits for the same job at Lander. (link); On his first official day on the job, new Oklahoma Prez Gallogly cut a third of the positions that report directly to him. (link); Nike has a new Chief Sustainability Officer in 19-year veteran Kinder. Former CSO Jones will now oversee the company's in-house incubator. (link)
As we head into the era of legalized sports gambling, you'll want to give this a look as Tennis pros discuss the social media vitriol they often receive from gamblers who have bet on their matches. 110th-ranked Polansky: "Today, I just looked briefly; I had two or three messages, like: 'How can you lose to someone ranked lower than you?' 'You should die.' 'Quit tennis.' Stuff like that. It’s guys who bet money on you and lost. ... Just the things they say are, like,''Wow.' It’s tough to step in and stop all that. I don’t think it’s preventable." ATP spokesman Higson: "This is an issue that isn’t going to go away and it is important that our players are able to understand what they are receiving, why, how to respond and what actions they are advised to take." Lots more. (link)
Big 12 leaders comment on the challenge of modern technology meeting facility design & the overall impact on putting butts in seats for FB games. Oklahoma AD Castiglione: "I tell our staff all the time, while we still technically sell tickets — the ticket is the transactional instrument to get someone into the experience — really we're creating unique experiences and hopefully trying to make it as attractive for the largest group of people." Baylor AD Rhoades: "You're always balancing return on investment. If we invest in this area, does it really help bring people to the stadium?" Iowa State boss Pollard points to the importance of longterm money management on big facility projects, otherwise, "All of a sudden you wake up one day and you go, 'Uh oh, now we have a huge problem.'" (link)
Facilities, continued: South Alabama is not looking for any cash from its university foundation for the build of a new FB stadium as such a request would be "outside the mission" of the foundation, per its Managing Director Roberts. (link); No more "Coors Events Center" at Colorado, now just the "CU Events Center." (link); Norfolk State is spending $1.38M on new turf in Dick Price Stadium. (link); Hoops improvements at Valpo gives the Crusaders a "DI-quality" practice space. $600K project. (link)
Fun piece from ESPN on which athletic departments produce the most draft talent across a number of pro leagues. Top 10: North Carolina, Maryland, Duke, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Syracuse, UCLA, Florida, Oklahoma, Ohio State. At the bottom there's also a listing of the top schools & number of draft picks per professional outlet. For example, the Top 5 for the MLS over the last 10 years: Akron, Wake Forest, Maryland, UCLA, North Carolina. More. (link)
Also Noticed: From Law360, "The NCAA is already pointing to a decision by the Seventh Circuit upholding its transfer restriction rule to argue that the Ninth Circuit should not revive a separate proposed wage-and-hour class action, saying the Seventh Circuit's decision proves its athletes are amateurs and not employees. In a Friday letter to the Ninth Circuit, the NCAA pointed to the Seventh Circuit's decision less than a week ago that rejected a challenge by former Northern Illinois University punter Peter Deppe to the so-called year-in-residence rule, which requires athletes..." More behind the Great Wall. (link); Check out part of Arizona's FB marketing campaign, wrapping a light rail train in Phoenix/Tempe/Mesa. (link); A new Snapchat 3D bitmoji lens allows users to play Tennis against Serena Williams. (link); OTT options DirecTV Now & PS View are raising their prices. (link)
Focus on the important, not the urgent. Sure, makes sense. But, how do you actually do it? Clinical psychologist & author Boyes with an outline: 1) Schedule important tasks & give yourself way more time than you'll need; 2) Isolate the most impactful elements of important tasks; 3) Anticipate & manage feelings of anxiety; 4) Spend less time on unimportant tasks; 5) Prioritize tasks that will reduce your number of urgent, but unimportant tasks; and, 6) Pay attention to what helps you see (and track) the big picture. Boyes, in closing, "I’ve written entire books on how to focus on the big picture and stop self-sabotaging, and I still find it difficult. I consider success as taking my own advice at least 50% of the time! This is a reasonable rule of thumb that you might adopt, too." (link)
