Turn With Independence

July 2018
Offcuts from the Board
July 2018

As woodturners, we do not have much scrap, just smaller pieces that can be used together to make something larger in combination with other bits and pieces. That's what this little section attempts to produce. By adding the small parts of our activities and plans we have a combined bigger picture of opportunities to take part in within the club.
  • This month’s Open Shop will be held at the normally scheduled time and date on July 14th at Metro Hardwoods from 10 AM to 12 noon.
  • The Demo challenge will be an egg, a baluster, a practice stick, or something completely turned using just a skew (or skew related tools, such as a parting tool).
  • Begin your planning for the annual creativity contest. See the article about it later in this newsletter. (There is a little different twist to it this time, so check it out.)
  • There are many ways you can contribute to the life of our club. A really good way is to partake in the Open Shop by bringing a project or turning and get a lathe going. Another  way is to submit your woodturning tips also for the newsletter. (Refer to the article later.) Of course there are many other ways to put your enthusiasm into action. You can ask any officer for direction. There are many practical ways to be involved. A simple way to help is to come early to the meeting and help set up the room for the meeting and/or stay afterwards and help clean up. Either or both are appreciated.
Keep turning safely and we’ll see you at the meeting.

Our Last Meeting

Mel Bryan demonstrated woodturning with the, "best tool in the box", the skew chisel. He showed the different types of skews, including what we don't normally think of  as being used like a skew. For instance, the bedan, and parting tools. He touched a little on the ways to sharpen and shape the skew. Using the skew, he demonstrated some different "pommel" cuts, which are cuts on square stock that transition from square to round like on a table leg. After rough turning the piece to round, he showed how important it is to "ride the bevel" to avoid catches and the different cuts that can be made, including; planing cut, peeling cut, V cuts, beads, coves and facing off cuts.
The "best" skew practice was demonstrated by turning an egg. Then he turned a baluster which combined a lot of the different types of cuts of the skew. He even, at one point, demonstrated his "roughing skew".
The demo challenge for this demo is simply to turn and egg, a baluster, just a practice stick, or something turned completely with a skew.

The video of each meetings' demo are available in the library on DVD to be checked out  by members. Also, the video will be available online at; YouTube Indep Woodturners
The video for this demo can be viewed at:   Part 1 of 3, Part 2 of 3  and  Part 3 of 3

Monthly Open Shop

Last month Open Shop was spent on preparing pen kits and pen blanks for the Camp Tomah Shinga Youth pen turning exercises taking place June 20th and July 11th & 18th.
This month Open Shop will be on July 14th at Metro Hardwoods from 10 AM to 12 noon as usual.  The first part of Open Shop will probably be spent getting ready for the last pen turning trip for this summer on July 18th.  But, if you have something that someone can help you on, we'll work that in also.

    Keep turning and be safe.

Upcoming July Meeting

This month Mikeal Jones will show us how to make those special wooden rings that he makes. He will show how he inlays the flattened, braided copper decoration in them for that extra pizzazz. So, if you're looking for a special gift for someone special, you won't want to miss this.

Turning to the Library.

As a reminder, be sure to take advantage of the fact that our monthly demonstrations are not only in our library on DVD discs, but are posted on You Tube.  One advantage is that the most recent demo will be on You Tube faster than it shows up in our library.  This is true for most of the demos done this year. Simply go to the You Tube site on your computer, tablet, iPad or smart phone and in the search box, search for  “Indep Woodturners” and the topic in which you are interested. And usually, the first item in the search results will be our YouTube channel which when you click on it you will get our channel with all the videos. Not only will the video of our demo show up, but related videos will show on the screen for later viewing.
Don’t forget to check the inventory of our library as we are regularly adding new items.

Youth Camp Penturning

The second (and third) trips out to  the Tomah Shinga Youth Camp has been made (the third, July 11, was actually made "after" this newsletter will have been published). We have helped around 50 kids (and counselors) to make pens and introduce them to woodturning. On the trip of June 20th, we had the help of two turners from the Flinthills Woodturning Club in Manhattan, Kansas when we had about 35 young turners making pens. Thank you to those members!  And it was fun working along side and getting to know woodturners from another club.
Tomah Shinga is just outside Junction City, Kansas. It's about a three hour drive and we go out and return the same day and spend 3 or 4 hours, setting up, turning pens with the kids and packing up to return. We will be going back out one more time on July 18th (the day after our meeting).
A special THANK YOU to those people that have donated pen kits and/or money toward our purchase of kits and the volunteers that help with the project.

Annual Creativity Contest
    This year the annual creativity contest will have a small modification in that instead of receiving a piece of wood at the club, you may use your own choice of wood supplied by yourself. All the same rules will still apply;
   1. Only 1 to 1 1/2 board feet of wood
    2. Use only wood. No kits, or additional hardware or accessories
    3. May be stained, painted, or otherwise decorated and finished. (Including, pyrography, texturing, piercing, carving, or such)
Since you can furnish your own wood, we would like for you to take a picture of the wood before you begin if possible.
A signup sheet will be available at the meeting to enter the contest.
The first prize will be a $50 bill. And the second prize will be a $20 gift certificate to Metro Hardwoods.
The contest will take place at the October meeting.
