Dreaming of a Green Christmas?
Many people are planning for a greener, less wasteful Christmas this year and we’ve got lots of useful tips and information to help. Whether you want to cut down on plastic, buy re-used and recycled gifts or choose alternatives to wrapping paper then our Christmas pages will have something for you.
Special thanks to the hard working crews who will be out and about collecting your bins as soon as the Christmas festivities are done, so collections are usually a day or two later than normal. Please don’t worry about any delays to collections if we do get a sudden cold snap - they will get to you as soon as they can ! Yule (geddit?!) find all the information you need about Christmas bin collection schedules as well as where to recycle your Christmas trees once all the fun is over.
You can recycle Christmas cards, clean foil, cans, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays in your recycling bin as well as cardboard and paper. Give your wrapping paper the scrunch test – if you can scrunch it into a ball and it stays there it's recyclable, but if it pops back open it isn’t (it’s more likely to be plastic or foil based). Please remove all tape and bows before you do and no glitter please! If your bin gets too full you can also take your excess recycling to your local Recycling Centre, along with any glass bottles and jars.

Suffolk Recycling Centres Christmas opening hours
We wish a very Happy Christmas to all our Recycling Centre staff and would like to thank them for all their hard work over the last year. They are out whatever the weather all year round and over the Christmas holidays they don’t get much of a break either!
Sites open six days a week from 9am – 4pm and are closed on Wednesdays. Over the festive period they will also be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day just in case you were planning a pre or post-Christmas declutter! Keep an eye on @suffolkhwrc for any unplanned closures due to bad weather.
Re-use at Christmas - you can donate items in good condition for re-use to benefit local charities at all our sites and they all accept textiles too. Or you could call in to the Foxhall Reuse Shop or your local charity shop to find that perfect 'not on the high street' gift!

Have #foodsavvy Christmas
Our Food Savvy website is brimming with ideas about ways to have a #savvyChristmas .
Planning and food shopping can be stressful at this time of year and we can end up buying more than we need, just in case those unexpected guests call by or we think that we are going to eat more than we do!! In fact, three quarters of us end up buying too much food - so it’s good to stock up on items that can be frozen and eaten later.
An average family can save up to £250 a year by making the most of their freezer – so why not make 2019 your year of the big freeze?! In preparation for Christmas - give your freezer a tidy up and eat up what you can over the next week to make room. Our 5 ways to save on your Christmas food bill and freezing food tips blogs are worth a look and there are lots of Christams leftover recipe ideas too!
Top it all off by taking the food savvy challenge in the New Year – to help combat food waste in our region and save yourself up to £810 a year too! Pop it in your diary now and start 2019 with a food-revolution resolution!

Polar bears and penguins
Schools and groups from all over Suffolk took part in this year’s Christmas recycled art project. Not only promoting reuse and recycling to our schools and their families, but also helping to raise awareness about plastic packaging and pollution and the damage it can cause to the environment.
23 schools, several brownie and guide groups, one library and a care home took part and made over 1350 polar bears and penguins - now hanging in 2 wonderful displays at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich Town Hall gallery. We would like to thank them all for helping us by making such amazing work, including the fabulous penguin in the welcome image at the top of the ezine!
