Oxfordshire County Library summer events

This is a special summer issue of our eNewsletter; we are highlighting events in our flagship County Library in Oxford's newly revamped Westgate Centre. Oxfordshire Reads, our reading challenge for adults and teenagers begins on Saturday 7th July - read about our 'Making Memories' sessions. This is followed closely by this year's children's Summer Reading Challenge, starting on Saturday July 14th. First up is author Cas Lester, with her stories and craft event. Towards the middle of August we are hosting our first 'Digital Summer' events for children.
Cas Lester

Join Cas Lester for a Magical Mischief Makers event, where we will celebrate her books Nixie the Bad, Bad Fairy series and Wilfred the (Un)Wise.  Be inspired by Wilfred - an eleventh century wizard apprentice who catapults himself to the present day causing no end of magical mayhem - as you invent your own magical characters. You can also have loads of fun colouring and making your own amulets and magic wands!

Other author events for children and young adults include a visit from MG Harris (pictured above) on July 23rd at 2pm - free tickets are available to reserve now. Cartoonists Neill Cameron and Clive Goddard are making their mark (ho ho) in August. Come and hear about the Marvellous Moon Map and make some paper boats with Teresa Heapy on Friday 10th August and on August 23rd Julia Golding, well known for her Cat Royal novels and more recently the Curious Science Quest books, will be appearing.  Events will be available to book shortly on Eventbrite and via Facebook.

Building the Reading Machine

In 1931, the American Surrealist writer Bob Brown invented a reading machine.  His reading machine never went into production, and even though he is gaining popularity as the ‘godfather of the e-reader’, some people still doubt whether Brown’s machine actually worked.

But now, the Avant-Gardes and Speculative Technology (AGAST) Project at Oxford Brookes University have teamed up with Makerspace Oxford at Oxfordshire County Library, the Ashmolean Museum, and East Oxford Fabricators to reconstruct his prototype!

12 to 18-year olds are invited to take part in this project, taking place in the Makerspace on 19th July.

Making Memories
As part of the Oxfordshire Reads celebrations going on across the county we are offering two events:
Join us for an informal discussion on what is so fascinating about diaries – real-life and fictional, on paper and online – and the writers whose memories they hold.
For teenagers - join us to discuss diaries as above and decorate your own diary to take away with you. Look out for this event on Eventbrite and via Facebook.
