USA Today's annual NCAA Finances database is out & we've tipped over the $200M mark as both Texas & Texas A&M produced $211M or more in revenues for 2017-18. Overall, 31 departments did $100M+ in revs & 39 were over the century mark in expenses. Top 10: Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida, LSU, Auburn. First non-P5: UConn at 49th ($83.374M in revs). SEC with 11 of the Top 25. James Madison top non-FBS at 62 ($48.21M in revs). Lots more, obviously. (linklink); Also,
+ The case of Washington State is explored as an example of overspending to try & keep pace in the race. WSU Prez Schulz on the overall space, "We’ve probably all put ourselves in the position where we’re always looking for that next biggest thing, and that means you probably spend more than you should. And I think we’ve reached the point where frankly some of that spending is going to plateau because there aren’t huge new piles of revenue that are going to come into those schools. So you better live within your means or find alternative ways to fund your ambitions." Former Cougars AD & current Nebraska boss Moos continues to say everyone knew what was going down in Pullman, shocked that people are, well, shocked. WSU AD Chun believes Moos brought Wazzu out of the stone ages, presses forwarded on narrowing the deficit gap. More. (link)
+ Here's how the results look when sorted by net income. Fourteen departments over $10M. (link)
The NCAA will not push for an integrity fee to produce revenues from sports gambling. Association SVP/CFO McNeely says it "feels disingenuous to think about taking revenue" from gambling. More McNeely: "We know it will cost money to monitor, but (association president) Mark Emmert has been pretty firm in saying he doesn’t think it’s appropriate for the NCAA to try to access that revenue. Schools will need to look at their own values and decide." Further on the financial front from Indy, $1B+ of revenue is expected for FY18, which ends on August 31, $10M has been set aside for Rice Commission recommendations implementation & the NCAA budget will include a 10% annual escalator in legal fees, which for FY17 were $36M. (link)
SMU AD Hart, whom USA Today's Wolken says had been the "initial focus" of the Kansas AD search, is sticking in Dallas. Wolken indicates more interviews will go down this week. (link); SB Nation's KU outlet reports UCF AD White has met with the Jayhawks, also mentions the new names of Northwestern Deputy AD/AVP for Development Goff & UCLA Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Rebholz as being connected to the process. (link)
The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that freshly minted Maryland AD Evans' path to "public redemption" has included more than amending for a drunk-driving arrest that resulted in his being let go from the same position at Georgia. Specifically, the Chronicle cites allegations of a romantic relationship with a staffer not long after his arrival at Maryland. An inquiry in to the matter found "no violation of university policy and no evidence of an improper relationship," yet former AD Anderson was concerned enough about the relationship to sever the reporting line between the two. Citing interviews with former employees and sources close to the department, the Chronicle adds: "Concerns about Evans’s relationship with the woman were significant and widespread enough to feed perceptions that the woman was in a protected class of employees who could not be crossed without retribution from Evans." According to a formal complaint, employees viewed Evans as "ascendant" within the program and feared to publicly disagree with the woman for fear of retribution from Evans. For his part, Evans has called the allegations "absolutely false" and says there is "no basis to them moving forward." (link)
Oregon State Baseball HC Casey after his third National Championship crown last night, "Arkansas was a fabulous club. The tournament was -- I thought all the teams here were outstanding. But what I will tell you is that the guys in the Oregon State locker room allowed myself and our coaching staff to push them to the limit many, many times, create an expectation that their successes would go beyond the baseball field and then go on in life and they'd create a brotherhood and a love for one another that wouldn't be broke. They say that wise men plant trees that the shade you'll never see. These guys leave a legacy for the next guys that come in. And I told them today, I said: This is the last time we'll ever put this uniform on together as a team. So when you hang it up, you make sure the guy who wears that number next time knows who you are.

SEC Commish Sankey rapped with notable Arkansas radio personality Mattingly yesterday, says, "I’m open to exploring almost any model (of expanding baseball scholarships). I’m open to that conversation. I think most of our institutions are open to the conversation." Noted the importance of Baseball for his league & the passion of Razorbacks fans who showed up in Omaha in droves. (link - scroll down)
Tulsa World columnist Emig examines the recent choices of Oklahoma State AD Holder, which were not all popular at the time, but have nonetheless proved fruitful. Chief among those choices was the decision to promote MBB HC Boynton from his AC position when former HC Underwood left for Illinois. Despite the vocal concerns among the fan base that perhaps it was time for Holder to move on as well, Boynton proved to be a "more genuine, confident breath of fresher air" than his predecessor. Emig also points to OSU's recent golf national championship, plans to renovate Allie P. Reynolds Stadium and this week's news that FB ACs would be receiving raises to better reflect their market value. While that's likely not enough to heal the relationship between Holder and HC Gundy, Emig posits the two will "succeed in spite of their relationship, not because of it." Still, he acknowledges that "Holder’s tension with Gundy is no small thing. It just doesn’t detract from the bigger picture of Holder’s productive past 15 months or that OSU should anticipate another 15 provided the soon-to-be 70-year-old AD doesn’t lose his verve." (link)
Newly named George Washington AD Vogel, who takes over on a permanent basis July 1, has already begun implementing her vision, naming Montgomery Executive Director of Development. Montgomery comes from George Mason, where she has spent the past 12 years as Dir. of Development. In addition, Vogel has named Hennelly Assoc. AD of student-athlete health, Early as Assoc. AD of Marketing, Sales and Engagement; and Lundt as Asst. AD of Operations, Events and Facilities. Montgomery: "As a longtime resident of the area, I am incredibly excited to join the George Washington University family and I am truly grateful to Tanya Vogel for this opportunity. I look forward to working with all of the donors in the Buff and Blue Fund, as well as the fans, to continue the Colonials’ tradition of excellence and to provide our student-athletes with a world class experience." (link)
Lots of good stuff going on at NACDA in Washington D.C. During a high-profile Win AD chat, Washington AD Cohen says she didn't really consult with donors about replacing former MBB HC Romar since she had 20 years worth of relationship equity with them & because they were divided on the topic. More from the panel included key takeaways from Northern Illinois AD Frazier, "Being consistent is key. The less consistent you are, the more problematic things can get." Also from Auburn's Greene, "If you’re going to make a decision now, you need to think about 5 years from now and what the impact of that decision will be." (link); So much more from the industry's annual summer party. In order to attack a common problem in an uncommon way, to paraphrase AD Halpin, Winthrop has shifted an increasing portion of its focus to recruiting overseas players in MBB, bringing in student-athletes from Australia, Serbia, England and Latvia in the past five years. Maintaining that ability, Halpin adds, is made a lot easier by making the NCAA Tournament: "There is so much gravity on that week that finding an incredible player is important. And beating out the major schools for an American-raised kid is harder than doing it in Australia." More on Winthrop's overseas efforts. (link); Florida State's 2020 trip to Boise State could signal the beginning of a trend for the Seminoles, who may make west coast travel a regular occurrence under HC Taggart. Specifically, AD Wilcox is looking into potential matchups with USC, UCLA and Stanford, among others: "Whether it’s from a recruiting perspective or from an exposure perspective. I think if it’s a West Coast team, we would go out there and play them, they would come here and play us." (link); Nike has ended a string of quarterly declines in North America by posting a 3% market increase to $3.9B for 2018 Q4. Consequently, Nike shares rose nearly 10% to $78.80 in after hours trading yesterday. Additionally, for the fiscal year ended in May, Nike's direct-to-consumer sales rose 15% to $10.4B. The company also announced yesterday plans for $15B in stock repurchases. (link)

Sports Illustrated's Staples digs into the story behind new Texas A&M FB HC Fisher's slide west from Florida State. Of note, "Fisher had grown tired of fighting over money at Florida State, and the people in charge at Florida State had grown tired of Fisher fighting over money." Aggies boss Woodward reflects on hiring then-Boise State HC Petersen at Washington, says he learned never to assume any HC was off the table. However, in the Fisher situation, Woodward says, "In contractual negotiations, you have leverage or you don’t. I had zero leverage," also, "failure is not an option." More. (link)
The Houston Chronicle's Moyle points to Texas boss Del Conte & his preference of hiring HCs who have previously taken over challenging programs & still succeeded. Another example is new Softball boss White, who arrives from Oregon where he took a squad that had never made a Super Regional to nine straight such advances. Del Conte: "One of the criteria I had was I wanted someone that was a grinder, someone that took over a program when they were not very successful and built upon that program. Me being in the Pac-10 for years, I remember when the University of Oregon was everyone’s homecoming game, to take a pun from football. They were not a very good team, they were not very successful. And I watched over nine years this program go from the doormat of the Pac-10, currently the Pac-12, to Oklahoma City five times, to hosting Super Regionals. I’m like, how do they do that, what is the championship formula?" (link)
Purdue Fort Wayne will get $200K in new uniforms and practice gear to reflect the branding change by the school. AD Hartley Hutton estimates changing signage and logos will run $100K. Hartley Hutton: "What we’re focused on is the logoed stuff. We want a consistent message in the community, and student-athletes and coaches are a big part of it in what they wear. Turning over that gear all in one year is an added expense, but we think it’s a worthy one, rather than having some people wearing one logo and somebody another one." (link)
After what she characterizes as a trying time on the East Carolina Women's Golf team, former student-athlete Allred turned her efforts to advocating for the just treatment of student-athletes by pushing for the Fair Treatment of College Athletes measure that recently passed the North Carolina state legislature. The bill creates a commission that will collect and assess the concerns of student-athletes, and Allred and her parents hope it will lead to an overarching code of conduct for college coaches and bill of rights for college athletes. "It’s incredible, the steps North Carolina is taking to protect its student-athletes. I’m really hoping this can push other state legislatures to push for this as well, so that will push the NCAA to pass proper legislation to protect their student-athletes, which they are failing to right now." State Senator Tarte, one of the bill's sponsors, said the commission would need to gather stakeholders from across the college sports landscape, from student-athletes to administrators. But that's a part of the reason for the bill. If you have no voice and you're a captive. ... It comes as close to modern-day slavery as it can be, right? ... This needs to be far-reaching, far-sweeping, getting at facts and background. The abuses need to come to a screeching halt." (link)

East Tennessee State selects Van Wagner to represent the Bucs in the marketplace for the next 10 years. Covers sponsorships & media sales, as well as on- and off-campus marketing promotions. Looks like Leona Marketing Group aided ETSU through the process. ETSU AD Carter: "A partnership of this magnitude is a testament to the extraordinary brand we have at ETSU. Each of our corporate partners have made this day possible through their tremendous support and investment in the Bucs. […] This agreement will allow us to reallocate other departmental resources to better meet our primary goal of providing the best experience possible for our student-athletes and fans." (link)
The CAA has released its MBB conference slate for 2018-19, the first year of a five-year rotating schedule that will pair schools with travel partners. Aside from the Friday/Sunday opening weekend, the 18-game schedule will adhere to a Thursday/Saturday format wherein each team will play each other both at home and on the road. Commish D'Antonio: "The new travel partner schedule provides better balance and equality for all teams. We believe playing a full double round-robin format is the best way to begin the process of determining a true conference champion.” Full schedule. (link); Missouri Valley Commish Elgin hopes the new composite ratings metric helps mid-majors earn more at large NCAA Tourney bids. Southern Illinois HC Hinson would simply like to see the Tourney expand. Important: "Only three at-large bids went to teams outside the top seven-ranked conferences last year (the MVC was No. 8) — and nine in the last three years." (link)
Arizona State MBB HC Hurley hasn't been afraid to build strong schedules since his arrival in Tempe & Sun Devils Senior Assoc. AD Cohen, who helps Hurley with his annual build, "Our scheduling is just part of our DNA now. I don’t want to say that we’ll play anybody, anywhere. But these bigger games, bigger national games, they are good for TV, they are good for the school and it’s good for the players and their development." Some perspective from ASU AD Anderson, "We’re not doing anything that’s a one-off. … It’s a home-and-home series. If you don’t want to do that, we’re not scheduling you." Hurley's 2018-19 campaign includes Mississippi State in Las Vegas, Nevada in LA, at Georgia & Vanderbilt, hosting Kansas. (link)
Rutgers and Paciolan will continue an already 30-year relationship and add in the PAC Fund. Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs and Strategic Communications Thorpe: "Paciolan has been a wonderful partner for Rutgers Athletics for quite a while. We are thrilled to announce the extension of this long term partnership and be at the forefront of working with them to develop the next analytics solution that will shape our industry. As the modern-day fan evolves, it’s critical that we advance systems and strategies to maximize our ticketing efforts. Paciolan is embracing this evolution and their commitment to innovation will allow us to find and service the next wave of Rutgers supporters." (link); North Texas selects Paciolan. AD Baker: "As we  continue to search for ideas to streamline the customer service experience for Mean Green fans, we believe Paciolan provides the best solution. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to enjoy UNT athletic events, and Paciolan provides better synergy across all of our platforms and should be the most seamless system to help in that effort." (link); The disassociation letters former Louisville AD Jurich sent to former MBB student-athletes Harrell and Behanan last April have been made public via a FOIA request. Neither "can be made welcome by the basketball program until 2021." (link); Liberty's Flames Club is officially halfway through its annual giving campaign with 665 members contributing a combined $730K. Including luxury suite and legacy gifts that number is $1.295M, a 48% uptick from this point last year. Last year's total was $1.359M. (link); Michigan will pay a combined $4.6M for non-conference games for the upcoming FB season, including the $2M cancellation fee the Wolverines must pay Arkansas. SMU will get $1.4M and Western Michigan $1.2M for their respective games. (link)
Now here's one to think about from Harvard Business Review: Too Much Team Harmony Can Kill Creativity. Here's the thesis, "...scientific research shows that creativity and innovation can be enhanced by reducing team harmony. [... ] The lesson for leaders is obvious: Fight harmony, inject some tension into your teams and organizations, and embrace a moderate amount of conflict." Solutions: 1) Set bold but achievable goals; 2) Sustain positive stress; and, 3) Elicit conflict & adversity. However, key suggestions, a) Make sure the team has the right personality characteristics; b) Increase psychological safety; and, c) Give the team a chance to settle. (link)
