Hello from the MU Career Center!

Is it just us, or is summer flying by? If you're like us, you're enjoying welcoming new students while also trying to make some progress on that "summer projects" list!
Once again, we'll try to keep this newsletter brief as we head into what may be a long holiday weekend (or a holiday week for some of you? What do you do when July 4th is on a Wednesday?!). Either way, stay cool and enjoy what's left of summer!

Read on for information about how we can collaborate with you to integrate career-related information into your work with students (the second article in our three-part series, this one focuses on CliftonStrengths!), more summer counseling availability for students, tips for using Mizzou Career Tools, our customizable search tool for career-related resources, as well as campus career fairs scheduled for fall.

Summer Update: We have staff available to provide drop - in help between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday when classes are in session. The Student Success Center is making accessibility upgrades and the elevator is out of service for the entire summer. For accommodations or questions, please call us at 573-882-6801 anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

As always, thanks for your support and for reading our newsletter!

Warmly,
The MU Career Center Team

MU Career Center: Your Collaborator on Career Development
(Second in a Three-Part Series)
By Carrie Collier, MU Career Center Staff
This is the second of three articles in our summer series about how the MU Career Center can act as your collaborator/consultant/partner on integrating career development content and planning into your interactions with students.

May - Part 1: Career Development in (and out of) the Classroom
June - Part 2: Using CliftonStrengths in the Classroom and Beyond
July - Part 3 : Outreach & Presentations from the MU Career Center

Using CliftonStrengths in the Classroom and Beyond
You probably know that you can request that your students take CliftonStrengths through the MU Career Center, and an "Intro to Strengths" presentation from our Outreach Team.  Did you also know there are so many other ways you can integrate the use of CliftonStrengths into your classroom, organization, and department?

Beyond just requesting an “Intro to Strengths” presentation, you can also create multiple touchpoints for students to help deepen their understanding of their strengths and how they use them. We can help you create assignments, discussion questions, and activities to integrate CliftonStrengths with your course material, departmental mission, or organizational goals. For example, in the Sinclair School of Nursing, all students take CliftonStrengths and have their talent themes displayed on their nametags – this helps create a common language as students work together in classes and organizations to form community throughout their time in the nursing program.  Nursing faculty and staff regularly help students reflect on their strengths, helping them understand how they've utilized strengths in their coursework and experiences, and about how they can incorporate them into their job search and applications. In the Trulaske College of Business, all students in Business Administration 1500 take CliftonStrengths at the beginning of the semester, and questions about strengths are then incorporated in class discussions, reflective activities, and other exercises throughout the semester. Faculty and staff in the Trulaske College of Business have noted that coming back to students’ strengths helps them better understand themselves and how they can be successful in Trulaske, while also being more intentional in their emphasis decisions and career trajectory. Tim Hill, Business Administration Instructor, noted that CliftonStrengths has been a valuable tool for helping students better place themselves into the curriculum, while also giving them a tangible self-awareness resource to bring into future classes, internships, and careers. Additionally, it’s given students and instructors a common language for understanding themselves and each other.

Business and Nursing are just two examples of the many places on campus that have found their extensive use of CliftonStrengths has helped enhance students’ experiences.  Interested in doing more to incorporate Strengths in what you’re doing with students? Visit our online request form, review the multitude of options, and let us know what kinds of things you'd like to do! Additionally, you can check out our Strengths@Mizzou website for tons of resources and even more ideas. Don’t forget, we also offer a FREE Downloadable Class Lesson Plan on CliftonStrengths that includes step-by-step class lessons, PowerPoint slides, and multiple class activities from which to choose.

Have something else in mind? We can work with you to customize something for your needs. Just email us at careeroutreach@missouri.edu with your thoughts and we’ll get back to you. We look forward to working with you and being creative about how you can make the most of CliftonStrengths for your students!

Summer Counseling Available at the Student Health Center
By Pam Roe, MU Student Health Center
The MU Career Center offers career counseling for students during the academic semesters. Career counseling can be very helpful for those students who may need ongoing or more in-depth help with major and exploring career as well as personal/social concerns. Career counseling appointments are NOT available over the summer, however, counseling is still available on campus!

The MU Student Health Center has comprehensive medical and behavioral health services. The behavioral health services include psychiatric evaluation and medical management, individual and group counseling, referrals, and behavioral health consultation to medical providers. These professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers) address the wide range of emotional concerns that can affect a student’s health and academic performance. This summer, students who have the health fee will not be charged for initial appointments and a limited number of behavioral health sessions.

Mizzou Career Tools: Tips for Your Resources Search
By Carrie Collier, MU Career Center Staff
You have likely noticed by now that the eResources page on our website, which housed all those handy-dandy Career Center Guide to handouts (resumes, job search, etc.) is no longer there. Not to worry – if you hadn’t found them yet, they’re all still available on our website, on our new Resources page (time to update bookmarks and links if you haven’t already done so)!

Last summer, we updated our website and transitioned to using Mizzou Career Tools, a comprehensive tool for customizing your search for career-related resources. All of our printed resources and handouts are available here, as well as the many online resources we’ve curated and recommend for information seekers. There are several easy ways to navigate Mizzou Career Tools:
  1.  Individual Pages on our Website (NEW!): Embedded on many of the pages within our website you’ll find the Mizzou Career Tools: Customized Career Tools button located near the top of the page.  Click the button to access additional resources related to that page’s topic. For example, if you are on our Resumes and Professional Communications page, click on the Mizzou Career Tools button and you’ll be taken to a page full of resources, including the MUCC Guide to Resumes, MUCC Webshop Resume Video, HireMizzouTigers Sample Resumes and Cover Letters, and more!
  2. Search Resources by Name: Located in the upper-right hand corner of the page, this is a great place to search if you are looking for a specific resource (e.g. Guide to Resumes).
  3. Trending Topics:  This word cloud located on the Mizzou Career Tools landing page shows the most popular terms searched by users. Current top search terms include: Interests & Strengths, Career Paths, Resumes, International, Inclusivity & Diversity, and Internships.
  4. Search Career Resources: Located in the upper right-hand corner of the page, use the drop-down menus to customize and narrow your search. Examples:
    • Explore (option selected from Explore, Experience, Connect, Prepare)  > Career Paths (option selected from Majors, Career Paths, Interests & Strengths, Inclusivity & Diversity)
      • Resources Results (Sorted by Views): Focus 2 Self Assessment, Career Interests Game, What Can I Do With This Major?, O*Net, Career One Stop, MUCC Guide to Exploring Majors and Careers, and many more
      • Narrow Your Search: Non-Profit (Where Am I Headed? selection) > Student of Color (About Me selection) > Healthcare and Medicine (Industry Selection)
        1. Resources Results (Sorted by Relevance): A Guide to Public Health Careers, American Red Cross Jobs, Family Care International, MUCC Healthcare & medical Job Search Series, INROADS, and many more
Can’t find a resource? Have a resource to suggest that doesn’t show up on your search results? Let us know! Email career@missouri.edu with your questions and suggestions. Happy searching!

Fall Career Fairs: Mark Your Calendar Now!
Plan now to let your students know about the many career fairs happening on campus this fall, staring as early as mid-September! Check out the full list of fairs, mark your calendars, and make a note to remind your students to attend. The majority of the career fairs are free and open to ALL students on campus. To help students prepare for the fairs, whether they are job-seeking or just exploring and learning more about opportunities, refer them to the MU Career Center's Guide to Career Fairs so they know what to do before, during, and after the fairs to make the most of the fairs.

Students can register for career fairs on HireMizzouTigers powered by Handshake. Since the launch of Handshake in July 2016, more than 26,000 jobs and internships have been posted to the site, and career fairs are a GREAT way to connect with some of the employers posting jobs there and to learn more about all of the wonderful job, internship, and experiential opportunities available for Mizzou students!
