Summer Reading Program 2018 Update

We've about halfway through our Summer Reading Program. We've been having fun with the weekly and every-other-week programs featured later in this newsletter, plus...
  • We had The Amazing Arthur come out to Twin Rivers YMCA for a magic and juggling show. YMCA summer camp kids plus several other families were there for the fun. It was amazing!
  • Alyssa Griggs and Heather Baxter treated us to a program of flute and oboe duets.
  • Sydney has been visiting YMCA summer camp kids on Tuesdays in lieu of Tuesday After-school. Good responses to crafts and audiobooks!
You can still pick up summer reading sheets from the library:
  • K-3rd grade student have a “Libraries Rock” themed sheet where they can color a picture for each book they’ve read.
  • 4th-8th grade students have a BINGO sheet with different reading-related tasks to complete, like “read under a tree.”
  • 9th-12 grade students have a different BINGO sheet with types of books to read in the blanks.
When young readers from all of these age groups bring completed sheets back to the library, they will receive a keychain harmonica and a voucher for 1 free fruit smoothie from The Brew here in Valley.

They'll also be entered into a drawing on July 26 (shortly after 6 p.m.) for thunder tubes and ukuleles. We'll also be having an ice cream party and our final karaoke program of the summer that night! K-3 can turn in additional sheets for more entries into the drawing. Young readers from the other grades can complete more than 1 BINGO on their sheet to be entered multiple times. They only compete against others in their own age range for drawing prizes. (As things currently stand, anyone in the 9th-12th group who turns in their BINGO sheet has an especially good chance of winning a ukulele.)

 Toy Piano Interactive Performance

Dr. Stacey Barelos will be at the library at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19th with for a night of serious musical fun. She is a composer who teaches at the Omaha Conservatory of Music.

All ages welcome to this free event!

Book Sale!

Due to a LARGE donation of mainly military history and older children's books, we're having a book sale through the first week or two of July. Take what you want (please!), and if you'd like to make a donation to Friends of the Library, we're happy to take it!
Monday Programs for Wee Ones

On Monday mornings at 10:30am this June and July, bring your birth to preschool-aged children to the library for programs on making musical instruments from recycled materials, and for Read & Play programs with DC West early education staff.
Tuesday Musical Films

On Tuesdays in June and July, we'll be showing musicals starting at 5:30 p.m. We may have refreshments, but you're welcome to bring your own snacks or even blankets to get cozy while watching. Free and open to the public!

Due to the way licensing works, we can't make public announcements about specific films we're showing, but you can ask us. We often reveal the title days ahead of time inside the library.
Thursday Dancing and Karaoke

Any-ages line dances continue on July 5th and 12th, which are both Thursday nights at 6:00 p.m. Sydney will be ready with dances aimed at the young, the old, and the in-between!

Our final Karaoke night will be at 6:00 p.m. on July 26th. This will also be our ice cream party and Summer Reading Program prize drawing night! Free and open to the public.

Open the Box Program

Have you heard of an “escape room,” where players solve puzzles and crack codes in order to get out of a room before the time runs out? They’re getting quite popular, and there are a few professional locations in and around Omaha. An “Open the Box” experience is very similar, only no one is locked in a room. Instead of finding a code or a key to get out of a room, players are asked to find a code to open a lockbox before the time runs out.

A one-of-a-kind Open the Box experience has been designed for Valley Public Library. Its difficulty level is targeted at teenagers, but all are welcome to attempt this program, with recommended group sizes of three or four people. This program is free, but slots are limited and are only available on select Wednesdays and Saturdays (July 11th, 18th, 28th). Sign-ups are available at Valley Public Library. You may also call-in to sign up for a slot (402-359-9924).

This Open the Box experience has been titled “Claim your Inheritance.” The set-up is that 50 years ago, a millionaire from Valley knew he was going to die without an heir. To find someone clever enough to inherit his money, he set up this puzzle so that only someone who solved it would gain what he left. It is rumored that at least 100 grand is held at the library, guarded by the lockbox (Winners will obtain a 100 Grand candy bar). This millionaire had donated a personal collection of books to the library along with the secrets of how to gain access to the inheritance, so that a librarian may open the lockbox if need be. The catch is that in less than an hour, the inheritance will be forfeit to the city if left unclaimed. Area youth are invited to try their hand at opening the box and claiming their prize before the time runs out!

Graphic Novels

Thanks to state funding for a special project, we've greatly expanded our graphic novel collection for all age levels!

For adult graphic novels, see the adult New Books display in the front room of the library.
For junior, middle grade, and young adult graphic novels, look after Fiction.
Puppet Theater

A big thank you to Georgene Gottsch for making us a new puppet show curtain! It was very thoughtful of her to offer, and then she brought it in the same day she offered to make it! This will now be available for in-library use upon request.
