Ward 1 meeting 
Special topic: TABOR and short-term rentals
Ramey Johnson and Charley Able, City Council members for Ward 1, will meet with residents from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church, 920 Kipling St. The discussion will cover the possibility of a Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) ballot question and short-term rentals.

Ward 2 meeting 
Jacob LaBure and Sharon Vincent, City Council members for Ward 2, will meet with residents from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 11, at 40 West Arts District, 1560 Teller St. Subscribe to Ward 2 Meeting Reminder.

Monday Ward 3 meeting canceled until further notice
Pete Roybal and Mike Bieda, City Council members for Ward 3, have canceled their monthly Monday meetings until further notice. They will meet with residents during their Saturday ward meetings.
 
Saturday Ward 3 meeting canceled; attend community picnic instead
Special event: Community picnic 
Pete Roybal and Mike Bieda, City Council members for Ward 3, have canceled their monthly meeting for July and instead will host a community picnic for residents from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, July 21, at Addenbrooke Park, 600 S. Kipling Parkway. Hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages will be provided, but residents are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Ward 4 meeting
David Skilling and Barb Franks, City Council members for Ward 4, will meet with residents from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Saturday, July 14, at Green Mountain Presbyterian Church, 12900 W. Alameda Parkway.

City Council Update


Monday, July 2: Study Session canceled because of the Fourth of July holiday.

City offices will be closed on July 4.

Roundup from the June 25 Regular City Council Meeting: City Council recognized a delegation of officials from Sutherland Shire, Australia, which is one of Lakewood’s Sister Cities. In council action, City Council set the July 9 Regular City Council Meeting for public hearings to consider the following items: designating the former Hospice of Saint John property as a local historic site and establishing the Budget and Audit Board while removing the Ad Hoc Budget and Audit Committee. After conducting a public hearing, council approved a utility easement in Bellows Park and an update to the city's sign code. Watch the meeting.

Big Boom Bash 

Lakewood’s a new Fourth of July celebration hosted by the city will occur, rain or shine, at Jeffco Stadium, 500 Kipling St. Admission is free for this event, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. on July 4 and culminates with a spectacular 20-minute fireworks display at dark, beginning about 9:15 p.m. The event includes children’s activities, a community art project, vendor booths and local food trucks. The Lakewood Beer Garden presented by Foothills Credit Union will feature beer from Lakewood breweries and hard cider for purchase. MIX 100 radio station will be on-site with prizes and fun, playing contemporary hits and patriotic songs throughout the evening. The fireworks display will be choreographed to music simulcast by MIX 100, and spectators outside of the stadium are encouraged to tune in to 100.3 FM to enjoy. Skunk tests positive for rabies
Another skunk in Lakewood has tested positive for rabies, this time near Florida Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard. Protect your pets by keeping vaccinations current, avoiding contact with wild or stray animals and preventing your pets from roaming freely. Learn more at Jeffco.us/2365.

Free events for National Park and Recreation Month
Try a variety of free and low-cost activities including fun aqua fitness programs, ZUMBA and Les Mills CXWORX demonstrations, community yoga, meditation in the park, family nature programs and FREE admission days at two recreation centers. Details on all the events, which also include a free movie at the Lakewood Heritage Center, are available at Lakewood.org/July.

911 call center featured on ‘Let’s Talk’ 
"Let's Talk with Mark Koebrich," one of the newest programs on Lakewood8’s government-access TV, takes a look inside Jeffcom 911. Learn about how the latest innovation in 911 call centers is helping to serve a large segment of Jefferson County including Lakewood. Watch on cable channels 8 or 880 or on-demand at Lakewood.org.

Infectious bacterium found near South Table Mountain
A rabbit in the area of South Table Mountain in Lakewood has died from tularemia, according to an announcement from the Jefferson County Public Health Department. Tularemia is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium. Though it is an uncommon disease in Colorado, about 200 human cases of tularemia are reported each year in the U.S. You can protect yourself by taking a number of precautions including wearing bug spray. Fire ban instituted
Lakewood's fire ban instituted this week means no campfires or charcoal fires are allowed in the city’s natural areas and open space parks. Smoking is also restricted, and fireworks are always illegal everywhere in Lakewood. Watch the police chief and fire chief explain how to have a safe and fun Fourth of July. WANTED: Volunteers for Lakewood programs and events
Think about the last time you went to a Lakewood event such as Cider Days or a show at the Lakewood Cultural Center. You may not realize this, but those events rely heavily on the time and energy of incredible volunteers. If you love the programs and events that Lakewood's Heritage, Culture & the Arts has to offer, consider becoming a volunteer. Training starts in July for these positions. Planning Commission hearing
The Lakewood Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at its July 11 meeting to consider a special use permit to allow an animal care facility at 1401 Ammons St. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 480 S. Subdivision application
The city has received the following applications:
  • A minor subdivision plat application for property at 550 Newland St. to subdivide it into four lots. For more information, please contact Greg Colucci, project planner, at 303-987-7520 and grecol@lakewood.org.

Vaccine, license clinic
No appointments are needed for Foothill Animal Shelter’s vaccine, license and microchip clinics. The next one is 9-10:30 a.m. on July 7 at the shelter, 580 McIntyre St. Details at FoothillsAnimalShelter.org

Free legal clinic
A free legal clinic for residents will be available from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on July 5 -– and every first Thursday of the month –- at the Belmar Library, 555 S. Allison Parkway. By computer link, volunteer attorneys will connect with residents to answer questions, help fill out forms and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation. No appointment is required, and walk-ins are welcome, but service is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Details at JeffcoLibrary.org/events.
