Facing up to an age old problem
New Zealand's population is ageing rapidly. Within 20 years, about a quarter of the population will be over 65. But they will be healthier, live longer, be more educated and skilled – and will want to remain in the workforce well into their 60s and 70s.
As with almost every other developed country, that's proving a headache for policy-makers, as they grapple with exploding health, pension and housing costs.
But Tracey Martin is determined to see the silver lining in this silver tsunami. On Friday, she launches a strategy to prepare for this maturing population. She's calling it her "Positive Ageing Strategy". On the same day, the Employers and Manufacturers Association will publish an Ageing Workforce white paper.

Topic: New directions and local social housing
Wednesday 1 August
10.30 - 12.30pm

Housing New Zealand are branching into exciting new directions and are keen to engage with the social sector to discuss how HNZ could partner and fund social service providers to build successful communities and work with those most at risk of losing their tenancies. Accessible Properties and TCHT own and manage most of the social housing in the western Bay of Plenty and will also present about their work with social service providers.
Please come along to listen and contribute to discussions about how the housing and social sector can work together to improve housing and social outcomes for social housing tenants. This will also be a great opportunity to network over a light lunch.

For those that don’t know us – Community Networks Aotearoa (CNA) is the umbrella organisation for local community networks throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. We offer advice and support to members, and we rally our collective voice for policy action, social change and community empowerment.
In very welcome news we’ve heard that there will be a 1.3% CPI increase for organisations funded by Oranga Tamariki. While it doesn’t solve the financial struggle many organisations in the not-for-profit and community sector are facing, it will be welcome news for many. In the meantime we’re keeping the pressure on Government to properly fund the community sector – we know the dire financial pressure many are under!
Watch this space - we’ve been listening to conversations in the community sector about needed projects and support and we’ve started to explore several initiatives to address some of the gaps. These initiatives are diverse, ranging from governance, to community health – we’ll keep you updated as things progress.
