UCF AD White on reports he's been a part of the Kansas AD search, "Unfortunately, I am compelled to comment on another institution’s search. Disappointed that @SBNation stated that I met with another school about their AD position. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. There’s no reason for me to do that. UCF is the best AD job in America!" KUSports.com's Tait admits he doesn't have a beat on the situation & that it's "anyone's guess" as to who ends up landing the gig. Tait also continues to call former Louisville AD Jurich "the most intriguing (candidate) of them all." (link); USA Today's Wolken: "Tough aspect for a school like Kansas is potential AD candidates might be interested but don’t want to be part of a protracted search process where they might not get the job while straining relations with their current president." (link)
Longtime Kentucky boss Barnhart gets an extended deal that could keep him in Lexington through 2024 & see a $195K pay bump up to $925K. A top five Learfield Directors' Cup finish would earn Barnhart $150K, landing the top thirty equals $20K. Academic incentives connected to a department GPA of 3.0+ ($12.5K per semester) & APR of 950+. There's also an annual $100K "strategic goals" bonus & a $350K retention bonus if he's still leading the Wildcats through 2023, plus another $350K at the end of 2024. Prez Capilouto highly complimentary of his athletics leader. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz: "A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the $42.3 million fees and costs award to lawyers representing the plaintiffs in the O'Bannon case against the NCAA. In ruling NCAA must pay $42.3 fees and costs award to O'Bannon plaintiffs' lawyers, 9th Circuit panel wrote: 'The district court acted well within its discretion in finding that the plaintiffs achieved excellent results.'" NCAA Chief Legal Officer Remy: "We are disappointed with the court’s ruling, given its prior opinion endorsing the NCAA’s amateur college sports model. Nevertheless, we recognize the lower court’s broad discretion related to fees and are prepared to comply with the court’s decision." (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd got this from South Dakota State AD & Transfer Working Group chair Sell, "Transfers won’t be compelled to meet with coaches on way out the door under new legislation. At most, best practice but athlete will not be compelled. Rationale: That conversation will already organically be had in lots of cases." (link); Dodd also writes on the investigation of the passing of former Maryland FB student-athlete McNair. Terps AD Evans says Hall of Fame trainer Walters will have access to every piece of documentation connected to the situation in a wide ranging scope, "We've got to be wide open with him, or we won't learn. We look forward to him coming. We wish we didn't have to go through this, obviously." Evans also say the impact of such a situation reaches far beyond just the individual program, "Our other student-athletes, that moment of grief, mourning and you see how people behave in different ways. Our job is to take care of them, ramp back up slowly." (link)
New USF AD Kelly introduced in Tampa, "We've got to get this USF football center built. That's what's going to build not only our football program, but all our departments can benefit from that. And that's going to make our football program stronger and more sustainable. […] Frankly, right now, we want to make sure what we focus on is being the very best we can be. We're in a great league right now. How do we dominate that league to the best of our ability? That's got to be the goal right now. When we do that, when we build the tradition one champion at a time … we'll be the best-positioned school of anyone in the country if anything else ever happens (in realignment). That's our goal." Kelly's five-year deal is worth $625K annually. (link); Here's video of the presser. (link)
The Presidential change at Oklahoma means a different vibe for the Big 12 after former OU boss Boren played such a large role in league decisions over the past three decades. New OU Prez Gallogly on his perspective of athletics, "This part of our university has to do with business, doesn't it? I'm an ex-businessman, so I'll approach it that way. [...] We have a rich history with the Big 12, don't we? We've been a very important part of it and hopefully, that can continue." Sooners AD Castiglione continues to say the transition to Gallogly "is going exceptionally well." (link)
Sports Illustrated's McCann digs back in on the situation surrounding former UConn MBB HC Ollie, details the upcoming arbitration process between Ollie & the university with this key note, "whichever side the arbitrator selects as the winner in the Ollie-UConn dispute will most likely remain the winner thereafter." McCann says Ollie hasn't sued yet since his contract outlined the internal resolution process that must be followed first. Lots more, including likely defenses for each side & the possibility of a settlement. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
St. Mary's MBB HC Bennett goes in-depth on his program's scheduling initiatives as the Gaels look to make a trip back to the Big Dance. Bennett points to "unknowns," like how good teams will be once the games are played, not when the scheduling deal is done (ex: winning at Cal last season). Bennett's squad will leave Moraga next season to play at Western Kentucky, as well as a neutral site tips versus New Mexico State in Los Angeles & LSU in Las Vegas. Bennett: "We study all of this hard. A lot of it is out of your control and you learn that by going through what we’ve gone through the past few years. I think our RPI over the past three seasons is 19th in the country — that says something." (link)

#NACDA18 continues in earnest in Washington D.C. (hello to all of you already in sessions this morning!). Virginia Tech AD Babcock, Wisconsin boss Alvarez, Oklahoma's Castiglione, Texas Tech AD Hocutt, UTRGV's King, NJIT's Kaplan, Yale's Beckett & Chun, Bryant's Smith, as well as North Carolina Central's Wicker McCree, outgoing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi AD Lazenby & Xavier boss Christopher celebrated at yesterday's luncheon as Under Armour Athletic Director's of the Year. Former Tennessee Women's AD Cronan also in the spotlight as the Corbett Memorial Award winner. (link - scroll down); Lots more good stuff, of course. (link)
Missouri Valley Commish Elgin on the end of the Hy-Vee Classic in the state of Iowa after next season, "It made me sick, quite honestly. I had heard rumors when I was out there for the event that this was likely to happen. I just think it speaks poorly to the way in which programs make decisions to end rivalries. [...] It’s just unfortunate that Iowa seemed different in the way that they handled that event and the ability for Division I schools to play on a neutral court. Now, they’re like the other states — most of the other states — that really don’t have any intrastate rivalries that are played between power five schools and the rest of Division I." (link)
It's officially official: Arkansas & Dyehard Fan Supply link up for a multi-year relationship. Dyehard CEO Hough: "We plan to introduce higher quality Arkansas branded merchandise and upgrade the retail experiences online, in stores, and at events. Dyehard will have a local warehouse and a highly trained customer service team on-site to create the ultimate retail experience for Razorback fans." (link); Van Wager on the board again as Longwood joins the partner list. Lancers AD Austin calls the pact "transformative." VWSE EVP Palisi points to a "campus-wide approach for sponsorship development." (link)
Legal Matters: Former West Virginia Asst. AD for Business Ops Fortney sues the WVU Board of Governors, the WVU BoG doing business as WVU Athletics and current Rutgers Senior Assoc. AD for Finance, Administration & Planning Szul, who was Fortney's direct supervisor before he left the WVU department in May 2017. Fortney claims gender discrimination and a "good old boy" culture in the department, specifically "unending discriminatory language and actions, which culminated in her ultimate termination as a result of her gender and/or her opposition to Szul’s conduct." (link); Former Old Dominion wrestler Marshall sued HC Martin and three ACs for $4M in May of 2016 alleging they failed to provide medical treatment for a series of concussions he suffered in practice. The parties agreed to mediation and settled on a $525K settlement in January, however, the money has yet to change hands so Marshall motioned in May that the case be re-opened. Part of the hold up is a required approval from the governor's office. (link); Kansas booster Fritzel was allowed to use the Jayhawk name and brand to promote his Jayhawk Club despite an ongoing fraud investigation, for which he was indicted on Wednesday. The agreement between Fritzel and the school is for 20 years, the first 10 of which he pays $120K for use of the marks and names. KU spokesman Monaco: "The university does due diligence before engaging in partnerships with external entities, and based on what was publicly known at that time, we were comfortable granting naming rights to the club. Alvamar Country Club had been a great home for the university’s men’s and women’s golf programs, and there had been a terrific partnership between the club and the university during that time. The new license agreement was an extension of that partnership that we determined would benefit The Jayhawk Club, the university, our student-athletes and the entire region." More here, including a questionable lease by KU of the Rock Chalk Park approved by former AD Zenger. (link)
More Personnel: Richmond AD Hardt picks Holy Cross Asst. AD for Compliance Colton as the next Assoc. AD for Compliance for the Spiders. (link); Northern Kentucky MBB HC Brannen signs an extension through 2021-22. (link); Hofstra hires Rutgers Interim Softball HC Miller as the new leader for the Pride. (link); LSU is still working through the details for WBB HC Fargas' contract extension, reported to be three-years through the 2021-22 season with no increase to her current $700K package and $200K buyout. Several Tigers' HC contract extensions are completed and were approved by the BOT last week, including Director of Golf's Winstead two-year increase through 2023 and raise to $275K, newly minted Women's Golf HC Runion gets $115K through 2021, Beach Volleyball HC Brock through 2020 and up to $100K annually, and Co-Women's Tennis HCs Julia and Michael Sell each got three-year extensions but no bump in their $125K salaries. (link); Kennesaw State goes with Texas AC MacKay to lead the Owls Softball program. (link); Holy Cross AC Burke promoted to HC of the Men's Lacrosse team. (link); Quinnipiac Men's Hockey HC Pecknold signs a five-year extension through the 2022-23 season, just as Prez Lahey retires. (link); Charlotte AD Hill goes with 49ers alum and LIU Brooklyn HC Davison as the next Women's Tennis HC. (link)
New Charlotte AD Hill inked on his first 100 days with the 49ers, notes raising the 'Exponential Capital Campaign' goal from $40M to $49M, adding 2,500 seats for FB's early season match-ups with Appalachian State & Fordham, as well as the start of a master facilities plan. Of note, "...make no mistake, we are not in this to be ordinary – we are in it to be extraordinary. We expect to be highly competitive in every sport – and we expect to compete for conference championships and NCAA post-season berths. We have established 'Gold Standard' as a departmental theme – but it is so much more than a motto.  It is an expectation – for our coaches, for our student-athletes, for our staff and for our fans.  Excellence is our goal. To reach it, everyone must be pulling in the same direction." (link); The 49ers are in the process of constructing a new baseball practice facility & yesterday its roof collapsed on the same day it went up. One person was injured. (link)
More sound bites from Auburn AD Greene as he continues to make staff adjustments on the Plains: "Our purpose is to create Auburn men and women and it’s imperative that we have members of our department who understand that. Those are the type of people who we want to rise to the top of our organization. So, I’m less concerned if someone has been at Auburn for 20 years or two years. I’m fired up every day to work with those who are equally as passionate about the development of our young people Our responsibility as an athletics department is to raise the profile of Auburn University and part of that is through success on the field. The other part of that is to show the rest of the country that Auburn is a forward thinking, innovative institution where someone with my profile is wanted and can be successful." (link)
Colorado State received the third-highest subsidy among Mountain West members in FY17 at $23.2M, up $1M from the year before. Air Force ($33.3M) and San Diego State ($24.3M) led the pack while New Mexico received the least ($11.6M). CSU's breakdown: $14.8M in direct institutional support, student fees $5.8M, and indirect support $2.6M. Overall budget of $44M ranked seventh in the league. San Diego State on top ($51.6M) and San Jose State on the other end at $30.7M. The Rams spent the most on scholarships among league peers, at $9.2M. More. (link); Nebraska's FY17 revenues of $120.2M topped its expenses of $112.57M and ranked 24th nationally, but just eighth in the Big Ten. The Huskers received $26M from the league in distributions, compared to Michigan's $51.1M, but moving forward NU will receive the full share. Ticket sales accounted for $27M, private donations $26.4M, royalties etc $19.9M and concessions $5.9M. No subsidies from the campus side and biggest expense was staff/administration compensation ($24M). (link)
Ski New Mexico board member Garcia's perspective on New Mexico's financial challenge, "The fundraising we did, in a very short time ($181K raised for UNM's Men's & Women's Ski programs this year), shows that the ski community will step up to help. We would have done it years ago if asked. But let’s first let Eddie get the right people in place. I told the president (in a past meeting) if you cut these teams but don’t fix the larger problem, then you’ve only passed the buck to the next president and we still have the problem, just now without these sports that have represented the university in a positive way." No major update from Lobos AD Nunez, other than the decision on how to trim the budget/sports will heavily consider Title IX implications. (link)
SB Nation's BYU outlet takes a look at the Cougars' facility profile & ultimately columnist Welch believes the much more strategic angle to spending a the moment is on personnel, not buildings. On the FB front, instead of "massive shrines," Welch encourages thinking outside the box & leveraging the surrounding topography if more indoor and/or training space is needed. "Until that day, BYU will be best served to make modest updates and build their program in other ways." (link)
Also Noticed: The Pac-12 won a dozen NCAA Championships, leading all leagues for the 13th year in a row. The ACC and SEC tied for five a piece, followed by the Big 12's three. (link); The CWS Finals series averaged 1.96M viewers, up 4% from last year's series and the largest audience in four years. Game 2 peaked at 3.1 television-only views, Portland registered a 9.1 TV rating for Game 3. Overall Super Regional viewership was up 34% year-over-year. (link, link); Can't quite understand the context, but Texas A&M Chancellor Young ended a piece on not wanting Texas Tech to add a veterinary school with, "If there is some kind of rivalry between Tech and A&M, somebody forgot to tell us." (link); SEC Country officially closes up shop. (link); Acxiom's customer data business is getting sold. (link); San Jose State alumni Jim and Jane Carter make a six-figure commitment to CEFCU Stadium's Football Ops Building. (link)
