Vic Heppenstall T20
BELVOIR XI 185-4 (18.4) beat VIC HEPPENSTALL XI 183-3 (20)

Last week a T20 cricket match was held at Belvoir CC to celebrate the life of Vic Heppenstall who had given so much to the club and the wider community in the Grantham area.   The weather was perfect and the setting sublime as befitted the man himself.   Before the match a plaque was unveiled by family members formally naming “The Vic Heppenstall End” of the ground.   Money raised at the event was donated to St Barnabas Hospice and Marie Curie Cancer Research.
The game was between a Belvoir XI which included ten of the current 1st XI squad and a Vic Heppenstall XI put together by the club Chair, Andy Dann.  The latter included Graeme Swann, Matthew Dowman, Simon Oakes and Darren Bicknell.
Belvoir won the toss and put Vic’s XI in to bat.  Dowman (65 ret’d) put the hammer down straight away with 23 off his first 10 deliveries.  Bicknell (58 ret’d), after a quieter opening, broke out of his shell with a string of mighty blows scoring 27 in one 9-ball onslaught.   Dowman’s runs were compiled with a level of dismissive violence that thrilled the 200-plus present. Bicknell’s were more classically accumulated but no less damaging.  Both completed half-centuries in fewer than forty balls and retired.   Bowlers Phil Irvine and Danny Gibson slowed the run rate temporarily before Swann (21) and Danny Ross got things going again keeping the run-rate at a steady 9 per over.   At the death, Sam Penford had Swann well caught by Joe Bottomley in a tight spell of 2-23 and Vic’s XI finished on 183-3.
In reply Belvoir’s Olly Clayfield crafted a neat 42 at a run-a-ball while at the other end Jake Fisher (18) smacked four boundaries in an 11-ball cameo.  At the latter’s demise Tom Neville strode to the crease menacingly.  He took a ball to get his eye in and smashed the next for four.   From then on it was as if the rules of cage-fighting had infiltrated the cricket arena as he bludgeoned a 24-ball fifty.  It didn’t matter what was bowled, it was all met with a series of martial art strikes bringing him 8 fours and 3 sixes in a total of 64.  He shared a fourth wicket partnership with Lewis Dann (30 from 19 balls) who merely kept to the Marquis of Queensbury rules of batsmanship.  Chris Dobbie finished it off with consecutive fours to win the game for Belvoir (185-4) by six wickets with eight balls to spare.

First XI
Belvoir 291-5 (50) beat Calverton 134-10 (37.1)

Belvoir’s second wicket supplied 152 much needed runs to raise the drought that had been the season so far.  Forty-five of them came from the cultured Olly Clayfield (53) in his usual style.  Ninety-five were donated to the spectators by the brutal bat of Tom “The Maximum” Neville. In all Neville hit ten sixes.  Even his classical shots are genetically altered so that they appear like some hyper-vicious version of the cover drive or pull.  After Clayfield’s dismissal the impish Jake Fisher clubbed a quick 21 to keep up the run-rate and Joe Bottomley further brutalised the Calverton attack with 27 of eleven balls.  Neville finished not out 129 – his second century of the season giving him an average of exactly 100.   For Calverton Darren Wright bowled 16 overs of thoughtful steadfast spin.  Billy Armstrong came back for a second spell to take 3 for 63 and restricting the run rate to less than 6 per over as Belvoir finished on 291-5.
Danny Gibson (3-25) took a wicket in the second over to start the Calverton collapse.  Bottomley (3-33) then took wickets in three consecutive overs to have them at 6-41.  Johance MacKenzie (44) and Charlie Bateman (17) offered good resistance with an eighth wicket partnership of 55 before Fentem (4-22) returned to close Calverton out at 134.   Eight Calverton batsmen fell to catches  including peaches held by Gibson, Fentem, Bottomley and Clayfield.

Second XI
Belvoir 285-10 (44.4) lost to Burton Joyce 338-10 (43)

A veritable run fest at the Poplars Sports Ground as Burton Joyce batted first and accumulated a mammoth 338 all out off 43 Overs. Three wickets for Gareth King and two each Freddie Arlott, Joe Creasey and Aalhad Kulkarni.
Belvoir tried hard in response with Paul Chadwick (90) leading the charge with valuable assistance from Matt Fentem (61) and Gareth King who had a top all round match scoring 77.
Ulimately the target was just too much, but a good effort by all.

Third XI

Belvoir 182-6 (45) lost to Great Dalby 184-6 (27.1)

This was always going to be a tough match against league leaders Great Dalby and so it proved.
Yet again, Robbie won the toss and we elected to bat. As usual our openers started in circumspect fashion against some very tight and accurate seam bowling that was difficult to score from. Having taken the shine off the new ball , both openers fell in quick succession paving the way for two excellent partnerships. The first between the in form Ian De'Ath (53) and Matt Veasey (51*) and when Ian was bowled skipper Robbie McNeish (38) added 65 valuable runs with Matt.
The Great Dalby reply got off to a rapid start with our usual opening seam bowlers missing and it wasn't until the youngsters Oliver Poole and Joe De'Ath were brought into the attack that the run rate was dragged back.. There was a glimmer of hope with a couple of quick wickets but ultimately Dalby were too strong and cemented their position at the top of the division.

Sunday XI
Belvoir 248-3 (35.4) beat Stamford Town 247-5 (40)

A gloriously hot summers day saw Fraser Fentem lose the toss (much to the rest of the teams annoyance !) and Stamford elected to bat. The Stamford innings was dominated by two batsmen, opener Clive Simmons scored an elegant 91 and Skipper Neil Williams an unbeaten 104 going in at number 4. The pick of the Belvoir bowlers was Jake Fisher with figures of 7.2-2-28-4 , with 9 players turning their arms over with varying degrees of success !
We went into tea to the news that England had beaten Panama 6-1 in the World Cup.
Belvoir lost an early wicket before Will Bray joined Lewis Dann at the crease. Will made a positive 21 before being bowled by Holland, the young Stamford Leg Spinner.. Sam Penford (43) and Ed Limb (15*) supported the magnificent Lewis Dann who brought up his 150 with the winning runs, and almost 5 overs to spare.

Belvoir 79-2 (9) beat Keyworth U14 76-7 (18)

Keyworth batted first and struggled to get going against straight and accurate bowling. Olivia Gilbertson (3-3) took the early wickets – two bowled and one catch by Oliver Poole. Sammy Hardy (1-3) also got amongst the wickets helped by a good take from Tommy Bealby (Below top) behind the stumps.

A two over spell from Kellan Poole (3-6) – all bowled – left Keyworth 76 for 7 off their 18 overs.

Will Bray (37 not out) (Below Left) and Joe De’Ath (15) (Below Right) began the Belvoir reply at a rapid pace – rotating the strike when necessary and putting away the bad balls. The result never looked in doubt and despite the loss of a couple of wickets Will Creed (7 not out) and Will Bray (hitting a 6 to finish the game – added to his five 4s) saw Belvoir over the line after 9 overs.

Another good result in what may possibly be the last competitive U15 match this season!

Belvoir U14 Girls 82-8 (234 net) lost to Keyworth U14 Girls 76-5 (246 net)

History was made at The BCG on Tuesday evening when Belvoir fielded an all girls team for the first time.

Captained by the very experienced Leicestershire player Olivia Gilbertson (13) Belvoir batted first on a beautiful summers evening. The Opening pair of Olivia and Phoebe Lyle batted superbly, putting on 27 without losing a wicket to get us off to a great start. Georgie Moreley and Lizzy Hibbert-Smith were next to the crease and found the going tough against some accurate bowling. The loss of three wickets reducing our total at the end of 8 overs.
Third pair of Olivia Grafton-Morton and Ava Holt batted positively, hitting the ball well but were ultimately hauled back by a couple of excellent catches towards the end of their allotted 4 overs. Roshni Brook and Hannah Blake began to rebuild the innings scoring 12 runs off the bat leaving the final pair of Clemmie Bealby (11) making her Belvoir debut and Olivia Gilbertson batting again to add an excellent 21 without loss.
Total score 82-8 off 20 Net score 234
Skipper Olivia opened the bowling with Clemmie maintaining the family tradition and taking the gloves. Excellent bowling and tight fielding kept Belvoir well in the match. There were wickets for Georgie 2-0-6-1, Hanna 2-0-5-1 and a top spell of bowling from Olivia Grafton-Morton 3-1-4-2.
Going into the final over Keyworth were still 4 runs behind but a couple of boundaries meant that they got their noses in front to win what was a competitive and tight game, played in a good spirit.
Total score 76-5 off 20 Net score 246
It is worth noting that we actually scored more runs off the bat than our more experienced rivals which bodes well for the future of Girls Cricket at Belvoir !
