Hey <<First Name>>,
Simply the best thing that happened in the last week has to be the Women's State of Origin. I went to the game with my brother and nephew. Both are involved in playing and coaching rugby league, both were impressed.
Welcome to 2018 indeed. Kudos to the NRL for shutting down homophobia and for being the highest ranked national sporting organisation on the Pride in Sport Index.
Some other things that impressed my twitter followers this week: Jess Fox's double world championship, Liz Cambage tearing up the WNBA, finding out the highest paid volleyballers in the world are women.
And:
Something to fix
I don't want to single anyone out but this happens a lot. Too much. When you are talking about how a man is the 'first' at something, please ask yourselves... is he really?
When you’re telling our sports story, please don’t leave women out. Don’t be someone we have to call out. Be like Andy Murray.
Or Casey Conway.
It was good to see The World Game and some other outlets follow up with the correct info. Love your work. Love Lucy’s work.
Also, FYI:
This week, I'm reading
Third-Wave Feminism, the Global Economy, and Women’s Surfing - Lesley Heywood
Going surfing/doing research: learning how to negotiate cultural politics from women who surf - Rebecca Olive
I don't think I need to tell you why I'm a bit focused on surfing this week.
And unrelated to surfing but still riding that third wave: New Rules for New Times: Sportswomen and Media Representation in the Third Wave - Toni Bruce
Have a good week sports fans!
