Lake Health Update: Learning About Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs)

 Happy July!

First things first: We are very much looking forward to the Boat Parade on Saturday, July 7th at
2pm. Registration/boats line up at 1:30pm in the small cove by the Berkshire Farm beach next to Trempers. See you out there!

This week's heatwave may provide a boost for harmful algal blooms (HABs). Please be on the lookout for greenish or grayish paint like streaks or scum on the surface of the water. These could be a HAB that is hazardous to swimmers and animals. While possible at any time, heat helps them form and grow. If you see something that looks unusual, please contact Betsy Janes at queeche3@yahoo.com. It's helpful to take a photo if possible.

In the past, Queechy has tested positive for strains of algae with the potential to generate toxins, though fortunately no toxins were present and the algae found in small enough quantities that they weren't considered to constitute a bloom. This is great news!

It's vital that as a community, we stay vigilant so we can catch any signs of trouble early. Keeping our lake clean and healthy now allows us to swim and boat
worry-free, helps to preserve the lake for future generations, and protects us our property values from dropping because of declining water quality.

We are looking for volunteers we can rely on to assist with the shoreline survey that we conduct every two weeks as a part of the CSLAP (Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program.) Please consider volunteering a couple hours of your kayak or canoe time. It's easy and we'll teach you everything you need to know! To learn more about dates, times, and details, please contact Betsy Janes:  queeche3@yahoo.com

Sincerely,
The Queechy Lake Club Board
