Edition Ten 2018
29 June 2018

This is the last time I will write for the SGAGS newsletter, as my stint as Interim Principal concludes.  What started as two terms became five, and it has been a wonderful experience.  This is a great school and I look forward to seeing the exciting developments that I know will happen under Mr Racey’s leadership.

My very best wishes to you all, particularly to the students who (mostly!) give us great joy, and to my colleagues on the staff – it has been an absolute pleasure to share these five terms with you. Thank you.

Mrs Shaw and the Year 9 Visual Art students who contributed to the farewell gift organised through the Arts Learning Area on behalf of the School Council, in recognition of Mrs Shaw’s service to the School in the role as Interim Principal.

From Left to Right: Meghan Green, Mrs Shaw, Max Saseski, Amelia Saunders and Henry Ziheng Huang.
The artwork ‘Urban Jungle’ is a collaborative piece of multiple canvases in mixed media. The subject matter mirrors the School’s city location with bold geometric drawings of achromatic buildings. This creates a backdrop that contrasts with the bright analogous colours of the interspersed flowers. These iridescent and glowing organic shapes represent our students at home in the city.

Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews

Semester 1 Reports for all students will be available on SEQTA Engage after 3:30pm on Friday 29 June. The reports provide parents, guardians and students with important feedback as to the progression students have made across the semester and where they need to apply improvement both in class and at home.

For parents and guardians who wish to discuss their child’s progress with individual teachers, Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Thursday 26 July from 1.30pm.  Parents will be able to book times on the school interviews website after 3:30pm on Friday 29 June until Tuesday 24 July.  The link to access this website will be sent to all parents in a separate email. Students are encouraged to attend these interviews with their parents or guardians.

Year 10 Subject Selections for Year 11 2019

Thank you to all parents and guardians who attended the Subject Selection Evening last Thursday 21 June.  As mentioned on the evening, this as an important time for year 10 students. Mrs Jacobsen and I have met with the Year 10 students individually over the last week to discuss with each of them the subjects and pathways they are considering.  A reminder that the online subject selections must be completed by Friday 6 July.  The selection portal will close after this date preventing any new selections or changes.

School Uniform

As we head into the three-week holiday break, it is a good time to provide families with some uniform reminders, so that new items can be purchased at the uniform shop in readiness for Term 3 if necessary.

Blazers
Blazers are to be worn to and from school. They should not be left in lockers overnight. Blazers should be worn all day; they may be removed in class and hung on the backs of chairs if students are warm.

School Bags
The St George’s school bag is a part of the uniform. No other bags or back packs are allowed. On days when students have Physical Education or Fitness classes, they may bring their school sports bag as well.

Sports Uniform
Students may only wear sports uniform for Physical Education or Fitness lessons, or when given permission for an event (for example, Gandhi Charity Day).

  • Students who have PE in period 1 and 2 may come to school in their PE uniform; however, they must bring their formal uniform with them to change into at the end of the lesson. If students do not bring their uniform, this concession will be changed so that they must come to school in their formal uniform.
  • Students who have PE between period 3 and 5 must change into their PE uniform at recess or at the start of the lesson and then change into their formal uniform at the end of their PE lesson.

Arriving at or Leaving School
Students must arrive at and leave school in their formal uniform. It is not acceptable to arrive at or leave school out of uniform or wearing a non-uniform item (such as a jacket or jumper) with their uniform. The school uniform must be worn according to the school rules at all times.

If there is cause for a student to be out of uniform for any reason, for example, wearing PE uniform instead of formal, the parent must email the TAG teacher and CC student reception prior to the student arriving at school.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data

Our school is participating in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). This Data Collection is taking place in Catholic, government and Independent schools across Australia, and will provide valuable information about supports required for a broad group of students. This will enable Australian and State governments to better target support and resources in schools. This, in turn, will help schools like ours give students the support they need.

The NCCD is not limited to students with diagnosed disabilities. It uses a very broad definition of disability, taken from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, which includes a range of health issues and learning difficulties where schools implement strategies to support students in participating effectively in their learning.

The Data Collection will take place in August. No personal or identifying information about any student will be included. A letter will be sent home to all parents with further information.  If you decide you do not wish information about your child to be included in the NCCD, email your preference to opt out to Mrs Karen Van Rooyen at kvanrooyen@stgeorges.wa.edu.au

More information about the NCCD is available at http://www.schooldisabilitydatapl.edu.au/
Parliament House Excursion
By Elvis Moh, Year 12 ELACS student

On the 19th of June 2018, both ELACS and EALD classes of St George’s Anglican Grammar School went on an excursion to the Parliament House. Students had to walk to the Parliament House on a drizzly day. Fortunately, the students were not wet upon their arrival at the Parliament House. While waiting for the permission of entrance to the Parliament House, we got to witness the human rights protest by Burmese refugees.

Once we entered Parliament House, we were welcomed by the Parliament House tour guide, Ben. We were told and shown the history of the Parliament House building itself and the system of government in Australia. During this tour, we were privileged to have Premier of Western Australia, Mr Mark McGowan, welcoming us.

We were also shown some artworks like the first existing group of the Parliamentarians which is significant as it showed 19th century Western Australian government dominated by white males. Another artwork’s theme was based on the Aboriginal mythical creature, the Rainbow Serpent. After Ben finished explaining a few more drawings and statues, we had a water break and Ben treated the students to some apple juice and orange juice to quench our thirst.

After that we continued our journey into the Upper House chamber where the politicians were having a discussion on the state budget for about eight minutes. Then, we moved on to the Lower House chamber where the Liberals and Labour party were having a discussion on Western Australia’s tourism at Question Time. This started out pretty normal but it livened up in the 15 minutes we were there.

At one stage, the chamber became tense and politicians were trying to speak over each other. This ended with the opposition leader almost getting suspended by the Speaker of the House. It was a very intense debate but sadly we had to leave early to get back to school on time so we did not manage to see the final outcome of this discussion.

At the end of the tour, Ben gave the students some souvenirs. Then, the group had to continue their journey walking back to school.

It was an enjoyable afternoon spent learning about the system of government in Australia and seeing Members of Parliament at work. Despite the wet weather, we were glad to have this opportunity to visit Parliament House.

Year 9 tour of Channel 9

Thanks to their practicum student, Mr Joe Archer, the Year 9's were taken on a tour of Channel 9.  Mr Archer had worked at Channel 9 for some years before returning to university to train as a teacher.

‘Talking Heads’ is the Year 9's latest speaking and listening assessment.  They are to record a news story and submit it electronically next term.  Having learnt how the news is made and where it is sourced, the students now understand how a news story evolves and what they can do to create their own.

The students were fortunate to meet some of the television personalities. Scherri Lee Biggs the weather reporter spent some time speaking to the students, as did one of the sports reporters.  Even more significant was an opportunity to hear from the Chief of Staff about a news gathering.

.

Some of the student reflections:

The best part was when I was in the seat of the news desk. Carson

I liked sitting in the chair in the 9 news studio and reading out the script!  Max

Sitting in the seat and being able to read the news. It was a once in a life time experience. I really enjoyed it.  Farron

My favourite part of the excursion was learning about what goes on behind the news. Jack J

St George's Art

During the upcoming school holidays students and families are invited to view the Art Exhibition at St George’s Cathedral. Due to the extended holiday times this year it is the only opportunity students will have to view what is a fabulous exhibition, that is housed in our very own Cathedral. It features a selection of works from over 30 different schools across the state and showcases the best of their first semester works. It’s a great chance for students considering the Visual Arts in their subject selections for next year, to see the scope of the different courses on offer.

Some outstanding artworks from our current Year 12 students Syuen Jing Lee, Aimee Olofsson and Georgia Grubelich are also featured in the show. It’s open for viewing Saturday 14 - Sunday 22 July and well worth a trip.
