Brexit Brits Abroad

The Brexit Brits Abroad team need as many UK citizens who live (full-time or part-time) and / or work in the EU27 to complete this short survey about the impacts of Brexit for UK citizens living in the EU27 which we will use in our ongoing analysis.

What's new from the project?

It's been a couple of months since our last newsletter and—surprise, surprise—we've been busy with the research and with just keeping up to date with Brexit and all its twists and turns.

Here's the headlines:

Our March report What does Brexit mean for UK Citizens living in the EU27? Talking Citizens' Rights with UK citizens across the EU27 has now been translated into French and Spanish
We hosted our event, From Mobile Citizens to Migrants on 21st May 2018
A new report about Brexit and UK citizens in Spain from Karen
Karen talked about what Brexit means for UK citizens living in Spain on Talk Radio Europe's 'Europe Today'
Michaela was a special guest on the Remainiacs podcast, breaking stereotypes about UK citizens living in the EU27
Chantelle wrote about British people of colour living in the EU27 for the LSE Brexit Blog; this was later featured in the Financial Times Brexit Briefing
Karen's article on the problem with official statistics about UK citizens living in the EU and Brexit originally published in the Conversation, was republished in the Independent
Our report co-authored with Migration Policy Institute was referenced in the May briefing to the House of Commons Exiting the EU committee
Michaela's research findings were featured in the Connexion and the Local newspapers
Episodes 22-26 of the podcast including Michaela's interview with Aliyyah Ahad about her research for the Next Steps report, 3 episodes recorded live at From Mobile Citizens to Migrants, and Michaela's reflections on the need to understand the diverse factors that motivate British emigration

We need your help to get our report Our March report What does Brexit mean for UK Citizens living in the EU27? Talking Citizens' Rights with UK citizens across the EU27 into the right hands. The report is concise and highlights that many UK citizens living in the EU27 desire a clear and credible guidance about what they should do to secure their residence in the places they call home. With this in mind, we have have the report translated into French and Spanish so that the report may be communicated to local officials in France and Spain. Those of you living in France and Spain might help us out by downloading and sending on these reports to any local officials that you might be in touch with.

From Mobile Citizens to Migrants

We hosted our first event in May. This focussed on locating the discussion of citizens' rights and Brexit into the broader context of migration governance and citizenship rights. It featured expert panelists Aliyyah Ahad (Migration Policy Institute), Michaela Benson (Goldsmiths, University of London), Nadine El-Enany (Birkbeck), Omar Khan (Runnymede Trust) and Nando Sigona (University of Birmingham).

We recorded the event, and have now made the recordings available through three episodes of our podcast series (Episodes 24-26).

What's next?

We've been struggling to keep up with our own deadlines. This means that some of the reports we had promised would be out by now are still in the works. We'll be trying to catch up—Brexit permitting (!)—over the summer.

Reports in progress include Michaela's report about her research in Toulouse, Chantelle's report about the extent and ways in which overseas UK citizens are represented in UK parliament, Katherine's report on Freedom of Movement and UK citizens in the EU27, and Mike and Karen's report on how younger UK citizens living and working in southern Spain understand Brexit and its impact on their lives.
