A book by Dr. Marius M. Carriere (History & Political Science), entitled The Know Nothings in Louisiana, has been published by the University Press of Mississippi. The book chronicles the history of a startling new political party that appeared on the American scene in the 1850s, reigniting political fires over nativism and anti-immigration sentiments. Dr. Carriere's book delineates the eventual downfall of the Know Nothing Party, while offering new perspectives on a nativist movement which has appeared once again in our changing, divided country. The Know Nothings in Louisiana is available from University Press of Mississippi.
Dr. Jeffrey Gross (Literature & Languages) has an article entitled "The Racial Veil: Small Government Rhetoric, Neoliberalism, and School Resegregation" published in Present Tense: A Journal of Rhetoric in Society
The Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia elected Mother Anna Grace Neenan, O.P. (MSEL '07) as the Prioress General of the congregation to lead the religious community from 2018 through 2024. She has served the religious community as a teacher at St. Vincent de Paul School in Denver and St. Henry School in Nashville, as well as a principal at St. Mary’s School in Greenville, SC. For the last six years, Mother Anna Grace has been the Director of Novices for the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, responsible for leading the formation of the sisters in their first four years of religious life.
Analice Sowell (’02, MEd '05) has been awarded 2018 Kishor M. Kulkarni Distinguished High School Teacher Award by the ASM Materials Education Foundation. This award was established in 2007 through a generous donation by Dr. Kishor M. Kulkarni, past trustee of ASM International, and his family to recognize the accomplishments of one U.S. high school science teacher who has demonstrated a significant and sustained impact on pre-college age students. Analice is a Materials Science & Chemistry teacher at Memphis University School.
Dr. James Buchanan Wallace (Religion & Philosophy) was quoted in a June 21 article published in The Commercial Appeal entitled "Ministry leaders say the Bible compels their immigration work."
Dr. Jennifer Weske (Accounting) was a featured speaker at the Tennessee Society of CPAs Convention at Isle of Palms, SC in June.
