SEPTEMBER OF SERVICE KICK OFF

Are you ready for the biggest service initiative CBU has ever seen?! It's the seventh  year for CBU’s September of Service: 30 Days of Good Deeds, and we are better than ever! We will have 30 days of great projects and hundreds of volunteer slots, so now all we need is YOU!!!
Join S.O.S. on Friday, August 24 in the Buckman Quad, 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., to kick it into gear and get ready for all the fun, new friends, and SERVICE. There will be signups, free snow cones by the Sigmas, music, "Why I Serve" photos, chalking the quad, great new S.O.S. t-shirts for only $10, and more!  
S.O.S. is open to EVERYONE at CBU! Yes, everyone: students, faculty, staff, alumni, Brothers, and family members. We’re working on the calendar now and will have it open for signups at the Friday kickoff. ART GALLERY RECEPTIONS
The Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery will host a reception for two exhibitions on Friday, August 24:
"It's not personal" by Katie Hargrave will be on exhibition in the main gallery, showcasing her work that deals with "systems as broad as politics, history, our built environment, and our learning systems." Hargrave is a professor at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. She received her MFA in Intermedia from the University of Iowa, MA from Brandeis University, and BFA from the University of Illinois. Her work has been shown at DIY spaces, university galleries, non-profits, and festivals. She is a member of the collaborative groups “The Think Tank that has yet to be named” and “Like Riding a Bicycle.”
"Earth Ruminations" by Gustavo Plascencia will be on exhibition in the gallery foyer, feauring his series of photographic imagery using images and objects gathered from his environment. Plascencia was raised in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila. He attended the Escuela de Artes Plasticas Ruben Herrera in Saltillo, Coahuila, before immigrating to the USA. He received his MFA at the University of Colorado in Boulder in Photography and Media Arts and his BFA from the University of Texas at Arlington. Plascencia’s work has been shown at both national and international venues.

A book by Dr. Marius M. Carriere (History & Political Science), entitled The Know Nothings in Louisiana, has been published by the University Press of Mississippi. The book chronicles the history of a startling new political party that appeared on the American scene in the 1850s, reigniting political fires over nativism and anti-immigration sentiments. Dr. Carriere's book delineates the eventual downfall of the Know Nothing Party, while offering new perspectives on a nativist movement which has appeared once again in our changing, divided country. The Know Nothings in Louisiana is available from University Press of Mississippi.

Paging all students and faculty! Be sure to check out Nexis Uni, the new research solution from LexisNexis designed with and for digital natives. Nexis Uni enables quick discovery across all content types, personalized discipline pages for those who set up individual profiles, and a collaborative workspace for group assignments.

LexisNexis Academic has been retired, but the content offered in Nexis Uni is largely the same as LexisNexis Academic. Initially, there are a few source categories that will NOT be available in Nexis Uni. However, you will gain access to some new sources such as expanded congressional materials (Congressional Quarterly), additional business sources, federal regulatory content, and new international news sources. 

Overall, you can expect the same comprehensive news, business and legal information—and as Nexis Uni progresses, there will be access to more sources than previously available in LexisNexis Academic.

Jill Johnson (Electrical Engineering & Computer Science '20)was featured in a story about the first Memphis all-female Hack-a-Thon by WMC Action News 5 on July 21 entitled "First Memphis hack-a-thon encourages women, girls to pursue tech careers." Click on the video above to watch.

President John Smarrelli was part of a panel of local education leaders who engaged in a public discussion at the Midsouth Minority Business Council Continuum's annual forum in June. The group collectively pledged to lead the way on closing the racial wealth gap in Memphis, from the opportunities they provide for students to the way they do business in the community. Pictured above (l-r) are Dr. Carol Johnson (Regional Executive Director of New Leaders, Inc.), Dr. Andrea Miller (President of LeMoyne-Owen College), Dorsey Hopson (Superintendent of Shelby County Schools), Jozelle Luster Booker (President of the MMBC Continuum), Dr. Marjorie Haas (President of Rhodes College), Dr. Tracy Hall (President of Southwest Tennessee Community College), Dr. Smarrelli, and Dr. David Rudd (President of the University of Memphis). An article on the forum was published in The Commercial Appeal. 

The College of Adult Professional Studies (CAPS) participated in EMS Appreciation Week by handing out custom-designed t-shirts at various locations all over the city including EMS Administration, MFD Training Academy, and fire stations. CAPS has been partnering with the Memphis Fire Department for the past three years on various initiatives including a continuing education class for new paramedics, participating on the Paramedic Advisory Board, and a degree program specifically for EMS workers in Applied Health Services.

With the start of the new school year, we’re excited to share some exciting new changes to Alfonso Dining Commons! We spoke with you and learned that quality, variety, and health are some of your top concerns, and so in response we’re introducing the Green Zone and Delicious Destinations stations. The Green Zone will be 100% vegan/vegetarian and will feature items like Kung Pao Cauliflower and a Mediterranean Stir Fry with Basmati rice. Our new Delicious Destinations station will feature exotic cuisines from around the world sure to deliver on flavor. Look out for items like Harissa Chicken, Pork Ramen, and Chicken Jiang Bing! Finally, upon request, we’ll be offering individually prepared meals made without gluten for any student, faculty, or staff member with a gluten intolerance or allergy. YIDA PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

The Yida Photography Exhibit examines the crisis in Sudan through the lives of those who have escaped. The 313 breathtaking images featured in this traveling exhibit are part of a collection of 4,535 photos taken in Yida Refugee Camp by Operation Broken Silence’s photographers. The Yida Photography Exhibit is an immersive experience that takes you into what life is like in the refugee camp. But this is more than your average photo exhibit. Throughout this experience, you will be introduced to the crisis in Sudan, who refugees are, different aspects of Nuba culture and life in Yida, and tangible ways to get involved in supporting the Sudanese people through fundraising and giving. The exhibition will be open to the public in Sabbatini Lounge August 27-30 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on August 31.
