The Fight for Journalism
This Independence Day, join the Student Press Law Center in fighting for free press, free speech and independent student media.
Throughout the 2017-18 school year, we saw hostility toward journalists affect student media. In recent weeks that translated into several egregious cases of censorship such as the one at this Texas high school. We've also seen courageous acts of defiance and doggedness from young people who refused to let their First Amendment rights be trampled.
The New York Times recognized this trend in an important piece, "Hard News. Angry Administration. Teenage Journalists Know What It's Like."
Last week, a man targeting journalists killed five people at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland.
We are dealing with a crisis.

This act may have been perpetrated by a lone gunman, but the social environment that has demonized journalists gave license to his actions.

SPLC honors the memory of the Capital Gazette staffers by standing up for the rights of student journalists and journalists everywhere who are targeted, censored and threatened.
We believe advocating for student journalists means advocating for journalists at large. We believe in a free press. We believe honest, ethical reporting is a pillar of democracy and an act of patriotism.
In the spirit of the Fourth of July, we ask that you use your constitutionally protected right to speak up.
