WARM UP FOR THE MID-TERMS THE THS WAY BY VOTING FOR THE THS BOARD OF DIRECTORS!
 As required by Article VI, Section 2, of the Bylaws of The Heinlein Society, electronic voting of the General Membership of The Heinlein Society for the Board of Directors will be done using the simplyvoting.com website. The poll will open on Friday, 10 Aug 2018, at Midnight Pacific Daylight Time and close on Sunday 26 Aug 2018 at 11:59 PM Pacific Daylight Time. Voting instructions will be sent to the General Membership with specific website details, passwords, and any additional information, before the ballot opens.
As a reminder, the Annual Meeting of THS will be 9 Sep 2018 at 12:00 noon Pacific Daylight Time.

2018-2019 ACADEMIC YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The continued growth in scholarship applications is truly amazing. This year we received a total of 301 scholarship applications, almost doubling last year’s number, which was nearly double the year before that. Sadly though, we seem to be getting very few international entries. I continue to be astounded by the wealth of excellent candidates. Our scholarship committee truly had our work cut out for us to narrow it down to three. Here are this year’s winners:
- Carson Butler – Carson is this year’s winner of the Virginia Heinlein Memorial Scholarship – the “Ginny”. She was also the winner of the first “Ginny”, which we awarded in 2016. She is attending the University of Virgina entering her junior year. She is majoring in Cognitive Science. While in high school she was selected to attend the Frances Hesselbein Student Leadership Program at the U.S. Air Force Academy. In addition to a potential career in neuroscience, she is interested in aerospace and would “… love to work for NASA one day.”
- Reese Caldwell – Reese wins this year’s Dr. Jerry Pournelle Memorial Scholarship. This fall he will be attending Harvard University as a freshman, majoring in Chemical and Physical Biology. For his research into external control activity in synthetic cells with light, he was named one of the top 40 high school scientists in the country by the Regeneron Science Talent Search and has presented at two international conferences. After completing his Bachelor’s, he plans to continue on to obtain his PhD in bioengineering, and eventually to work for a university.
- Emma Sebesta – Emma wins this year’s Dr. Yoji Kondo Memorial Scholarship. She begins her university experience as a freshman at Indiana University Bloomington. She is working toward dual majors in Biochemistry and Spanish, with a minor in Psychology. She will be part of IU’s ASURE program (Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Experience). She was Salutatorian of her high school graduating class and received a gold medal on the National Spanish Exam. After obtaining her Bachelor’s, she plans to continue on to attend medical school and obtain her residency. Her dream is to become a fellow at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City.

We wish our winners, and indeed all of the applicants, great success in their academic pursuits and in their future careers. We have no doubt that they will use their knowledge as a springboard to Pay It Forward.

 Over 18,463 Books Sent!
The Heinlein For Heroes program (H4H) sends free books to troops, veterans, and military families. We send only to individuals or units that have requested SF material. Clearly many of our military men and women WANT to read good science fiction, including Heinlein. To meet that demand, our shipments go around the globe, as well as to veterans’ hospitals here at home.
 Contributions keep coming in, but your help is still needed. We need gently used paperbacks—and especially Heinleins, as we include Heinlein books in every shipment.
Money contributions are used to buy books wherever we find them (book dealers, eBay) at the right price. But free is even better than cheap. Is an SF friend or neighbor downsizing? You can help them and help us!

BREAKFAST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY

breakfast table while on a riverboat cruise of the Seine River in France. Note the
quotation at the bottom of the menu, from Friday. As best we can determine,

In contra-distinction, we should point out that early in Glory Road, Oscar
Gordon sits down for a large breakfast in Nice, France, saying “The French think
that a man can face the day with chicory and milk, and a croissant, which
