VALUES FOCUS
Trade War? Our Common Foundation of Life
by Prof. Cui Wantian, President and Founder of Geneva Agape Foundation

Trump’s trade war is to treat countries other than America as second class or enemies. All  peoples and nations have their self-esteem and pride, which is understandable and should be respected; but imposing own value to other people, putting itself before any other country, is barely acceptable. International relations and diplomacy includes defending the interests of the own country, but has to be based on fairness, mutual respect, solid analysis and information and looking at win-win-solutions.

The theory of free trade as beneficial to the whole economy has been shared by almost all economists, more than any other economic theory. Free trade – which has to include fair trade - is also the answer of values-driven entrepreneurs standing for their values which are rooted in their religious or non-religious worldview. Only those who want to be the monopoly and seek interests only for themselves would be in favour of the trade war where at the end everybody is a loser as we know from painful history in the 20th century.

Today, values-driven Confucians, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Hindu together must understand that as the inhabitants of the same world we share, we shall defend the common interests of humanity but not only the interest of one nation. And only together we can sustain the environment of our planet which is our common foundation of life.
