 Spring 2018
Greeting Friends,

This spring we have been very busy here at the Cal-SOAP office. We welcomed a new tutor coordinator, hired many new tutors, took students on college campus visits and hosted a workshop at a local organization.

Meet Marcos

Marcos Martinez is a San Diego native that relocated to Santa Barbara as a college first year in the Summer of 2009 and went on to graduate with a double major in Global Studies and Chicano Studies. He’s worked for the University of California’s Education Abroad Program, Santa Barbara Unified School District, City of Santa Barbara Central Library, Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara, Pacifica Graduate Institute, United Way, and one very interesting stint as the Pricing Lead at Kmart. Part-time poet and full time food aficionado, his homemade salsa was voted #1 at the 2016 Santa Barbara City BBQ. With nearly a decades worth of experience working in education with underserved members of the Santa Barbara community, Marcos is excited to tackle the new challenges of the Tutor Coordinator position.

Tutor Appreciation
To wrap up the school year, we spent an afternoon at Zodos to show our appreciation for the hard work our tutors put in throughout the year.

Farewell To Our Graduating Tutors
Cal-SOAP is proud to announce that 10 of our tutors graduated from UCSB. We wish nothing but the best to these talented and hard-working individuals who have surely made a difference in the lives of youth across Santa Barbara. Congratulations on your accomplishments!

Spring Presentation

This spring, we hosted a workshop for the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara. We brought students and families together for a series of presentations on higher education. We worked with our partners from Santa Barbara Unified School District, Pathways, Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara County and Santa Barbara City College. These workshops focused on the four systems of higher education, A-G requirements, Financial Aid & Scholarships and The Promise at SBCC.
College Campus Visits
This spring we took several groups on visits to college campuses throughout the central coast. Dos Pueblos went to Cal Lutheran, Carpinteria High School visited Cal Poly Pomona, Santa Barbara High School toured CSU Northridge and Carpinteria Middle school went to UCLA. This past week we were able to bring a group from Carpinteria High Schools summer academy to CSU Long Beach. We enjoy having the opportunity to expose students to a wide range of campuses.
We have a busy summer ahead of us. We have our tutors placed in summer programs throughout our region and our office is in the middle of a remodel. We are continuing to plan for the 2018/2019 school year and are excited to kick off fall with a bang.

Thank You!
