PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Activities for 2018 are well under way. We have already had the annual Scene Shop visit, the Spring Preview with a wonderful presentation by Kate Hennig and the Guild Dress Rehearsal of Grand Hotel.

The Annual Garden Tour took place on the beautiful day of June 9.  The net proceeds from the Garden Tour will be donated to the Shaw Festival to support this year’s production of “A Christmas Carol”.  Proceeds from the 2019 and 2020 Garden Tours will also go to sponsor “A Christmas Carol” if the Shaw Festival stages the play at the Royal George in those years.  Franca Moss and her team organized what I think was the best Guild Garden Tour ever

This year the annual Shaw/Stratford Cricket match will be played here in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Monday, August 27. This is always a fun event so please come out to have a good time. You actually don’t have to understand the rules of the game to enjoy watching it. A wonderful tea is also provided and everyone is welcome.

The trial for “Better Impact”, the on-line volunteer management system that will be introduced for the 2019 season, went very well. You will be hearing more on this later. It is, however, imperative that Guild members renew their membership on time so as to be included in the system. Cheryl Morris, the Coordinator for “Better Impact”, will be informing us of the details.

Just a reminder that the Guild has a Privacy Policy that ensures that your contact information is kept confidential and is to be used only within the Guild. No Guild Member’s contact information is to be given to a third party without the express permission of that Guild member. Would everyone please ensure that this policy is followed.

Enjoy the season!

Julian Rance,
President

PAST EVENTS

Spring Preview Luncheon and Show & Tell – April 9th

Photos taken by René Bertschi

Spring was in the air as Guild Members arrived at the Jackie Maxwell Theatre on April 9 to celebrate the beginning of another season of great theatre and events.

Following a warm welcome from Guild President Julian Rance, a tasty seasonal lunch prepared by Green Room Chef Allison was served. There was a lovely buzz of excitement in the sun-filled room of friends reuniting after a long, cold winter.

And then, we experienced an extraordinary presentation by Kate Hennig, Associate Artistic Director. She touched on so many concepts from masks, sets, costumes and more as she paced to and fro within the space. It was a wonderful preview of the coming season!  Thank you Kate.

Performing Arts Gala – April 27th
Triple Threat Award Presentation

Sheridan College

On April 27 I had the pleasure to attend the Performing Arts Gala at Sheridan College to present an award established by the Shaw Guild in memory of Jonah McIntosh, a young member of the Shaw acting ensemble who passed away last year.

Triple Threat Award was created to honour Jonah McIntosh and recognizes a fourth-year student who excels in the three music theatre disciplines of singing, acting and dancing.

The recipient of the Fourth Year “Triple Threat Award” is Meghan Caine. Meghan starred as Polly Baker in Crazy For You at Theatre Sheridan as well as in the ensembles for Kiss Me Kate and a new musical, Trap Door (book and lyrics by Morris Panych, music and lyrics by Anika Johnson and Britta Johnson) at Theatre Sheridan in 2018.

The faculty of Sheridan College has high praise for Meghan and thanked the Shaw Guild for our support in honour of Jonah. I hope we will see her star rising in the Canadian theatre scene.

Past President

Special thanks to Platinum Sponsor Mori Gardens, owner Tonie Mori, Miguel Mori and all the staff for their generous support before, during and after the Tour.

BETTER IMPACT
UPDATE

The Better Impact pilot is over and I thank the 45 participants who went through the process. Thanks to those who provided feedback, we’ve made a few refinements to the tool along the way.

A formal survey will be sent out after the implementation strategy is finalized by the Chairs. At that point we will be able to answer specific questions – and perhaps offer some incentives about the early rollout of the tool for all members. The main outcome is that everyone was able to get on to the system whether they went through hands-on training or did it on their own! This was very gratifying, and demonstrates that Shaw Guild volunteers are dedicated to support new ideas that will improve and enhance the Shaw Festival experience for all.

Cheryl Morris,
Convenor, Better Impact Volunteer System

HOSTS
JUNE UPDATE

hostingHosting is now settling into the 2018 Shaw Festival Season, with Host assignments for 211 shows booked and completed to June 20. Host Captains are currently booking into the middle of July.

We currently have 232 Hosts, with 20 brand new team members this year. We are very excited to have so many new members this season. And it’s wonderful to have such a strong team to ensure we have a “Buddy” to assist each new Host in learning the ropes.  Welcome new Shaw Guild Hosts.

I also wish to remind all Shaw Guild Hosts of the critical importance of showing up on time for your Host assignments at the various Theatres. The theatre cannot open its doors to the public without Hosts in position at the entrance doors.

In the event of an Emergency with a Host unable to fulfill their duties, the Host Captains and the Chair have an Emergency Host call list available in order to bring in a replacement to the Theatre on immediate notice. We hope not to need this too often!  But emergencies happen.

I again wish to thank the entire Host Team for their outstanding dedication, with 382 volunteer hours already invested to May 31, and getting the job done.
