July 2018 Edition

Pique Fund will be open to new investors (accredited investors, certain non-accredited investors may be eligible to invest) this Fall 2018. Contact us for more information about how you can invest.

We have close to 25% of our target fund capital for Pique Fund II identified from potential investors. I'll be presenting Pique Fund II to accredited investors in Fall 2018, with plans to travel to San Francisco (coinciding with the SOCAP impact investing conference in late October), Seattle, Calgary, and London. We are in discussions with our investor networks in Toronto and Boston as well. If you would like to learn more about our second venture fund, that considerably scales the impact and outcomes we've achieved so far with Pique Fund, please contact me.

In the meantime, in this month's edition of our newsletter, we share resources from the Pique Ventures blog, two articles about startup CEOs, decisions they had to make, and their leadership in dealing with sudden deaths and changes in their family, and questions and answers from Quora.

All the best,

G7 Symposium: What Does it Mean to Have an Inclusive Economy?
I had the honour and privilege of attending the G7 Symposium, an invitation-only half-day event on May 31, 2018 that preceded the G7 Ministerial Meeting in Whistler, BC. The theme of the Ministerial Meeting was “Investing in Growth that Works for Everyone” and the Symposium gave attendees a flavour of what would be discussed by the G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors. Read more about what was on the minds of the ministers in pursuit of an inclusive economy.

Startup Skills Learned from Parenting
After the sudden death of her husband, Lisa Tortolani was not only a grieving widow, she also found herself replacing her husband as CEO of the tech startup he had founded. “But the juggling act that comes with managing a growing enterprise was oddly familiar. Much as he’d often come home from work overwhelmed, I felt entirely in my element resolving conflicts, prioritizing tasks, managing crises, and juggling a range of priorities. Eventually, I began to understand why: Parenthood had inadvertently trained me to run a startup.”

Mainstreaming Impact Investing
"For impact investing to become mainstream, it’s not just about business metrics and the growth of assets under management. Some fundamental mindsets, how we think about investing, how we think about each other, the decisions we make, and the actions we take, need to shift. More people need to think of investing as taking care of the village."

Finding Your Tribe and Network in Impact Investing
There have been many occasions in my life and career where I’ve joined a new community and had to network and build new relationships. A mix of "in real life" and online conversations and a mindset of exchange (offer your expertise as well as making asks and extending invitations) can help you forge new relationships with people in the impact investing community.

Building a More Inclusive VC Firm
"With the rise in awareness [about diversity and inclusion], there is a mix of deep dives, hard work, and bandwagon jumping. How do we ensure inclusion strategies are not just lip service and that venture capital investors are walking the walk?"
